  • Do you know what tardive dyskinesia is? And what can you do to prevent or treat this problem?
To make this more complex: Other medications, apparently not related to dopamine blocking effect, might unmask this problem or something similar to TD in patients who were taking dopamine receptor blockers agents in the remote past. These other medications include SSRIs (such as Fluoxetine). Nobody knows about the mechanism or why this happens, or if this is actually related to non-dopamine blockers agents.
How do you make the diagnosis?
    1. You need to have a history of at least a few months of taking antidopaminergic agents. It could be less in older patients.
    2. The involuntary abnormal movement needs to be present for at least a few weeks.
*There is no blood test or imaging study to make the diagnosis.
*No consensus criterion for how long a patient may be OFF a dopamine receptor-blocking agent and develop a movement disorder that might be related to the medication used. It could be months or could be 1 year after stopping the medication.
