- Gloucester City Archaeologist Andrew Armstrong introduces a video made in the early 1970s by the first city archaeologist, Henry Hurst and then Gloucester Civic Trust member, Peter Price.
It shows the efforts of the Civic Trust volunteers, archaeologists and wider community, to protect the city's history during the redevelopments of the late 1960s and early 1970s.
I remember some of those buildings from the late 1960s and early 1970s - sadly no more.
Thank you very much for showing this important archive piece of film - most interesting.

What an interesting video. Thank you. I knew Gloucester well in the 1960s. Sad to say that today Gloucester has lost most of its character but the cathedral is still well worth visiting.
Very informative.
Shocking how councils were allowed to eradicate so much history....a total lack of control or responsibility. Luckily some have survived and I appreciate time moves on and progress needs yo be allowed but it's sad to see how much was lost.
The loss of England's precious heritage, at the hands of historically-ignorant or unsympathetic counicls, is short-sighted, irresponsibly, myopic and shocking. This is indeed a wake-up call. I resent how this generation has robbed mine of this legacy!
we lost loads
The system is not broken, this is all by design. Once beautiful buildings to inspire people, now buildings to oppress people.
