For the rats as a former exterminator: These animal exterminators such as ferrets, certain dogs etc are great preventive measures but you are well beyond that. You have to keep everything as clean as possible, keep the grounds as clean as possible, and dispose of waste as cleanly and quickly as possible. You also need to spray your place and keep the animals out for a bit and away from the perimeter. I also highly would recommend finding a technician that can deal with them possibly nesting in your insulation and creating a solution to protect that area under your house. I would personally dig 2 feet around the perimeter and put mesh to prevent them from coming in once you have someone check out what's going on in your walls. You're going to need a technician and to take some preventative measures going forward. Short cuts will always bite you back literally.

The coat looks like shedding. Some of my bunnies shed like that. The tidy ones don't have clouds of fur floating off, they have a "fur front" which moves across their bodies like that and typically it is the upper back which sheds last like that too. Others just have the fur sort of exploding off in all directions at the same time.

Please don't get a cat for your rat problems.
cats will always go for much more easy prey than rats.
They decimate local bird populations and smaller ground dwelling creatures.
Cats eat up to 5 critters a day because they have a very fast metabolism, in the Netherlands we are actively hunting feral cats because they do extreme damage, especially to our native birds.
I would suggest using traps specially designed for rats, there's this trap that lures rats and triggers a metal rod that shoots in their brain when triggered (co2 cartridge), it's the most humane solution as they're brain is instantly smashed.
Poison will damage their intestines and will hurt a whole lot, most of the times it takes a whole day for them to die in agony. And if you are unlucky there's collateral damage because the poison will be eaten by more than just rats.

    For the pond:
I think maybe using pond plants like water lettuce or water hyacinth to absorb some of the extra stuff in the water and that can also shade the water to reduce excess sun exposure, you could put them in like a floating circular tube of some sort to keep the plants together and let the roots sit in the water or let them float where ever they please not sure which one would work better tho that’s just my thoughts for the pond bc I’ve seen my grandma do the same thing to her pond before she got rid of it and I never saw it green so I think it works
    For the rats:
I’d say get some insulation foam, wire mesh of some sort and some nails bc I’ve seen exterminators kinda like foam up the area put pieces of metal mesh, nail it then put more foam over so even if they tried to get through the foam there would still be the layer of metal before the entryway and more foam behind that but I’ve never really dealt with rats first hand just hope you see this and hope it helps at all good luck farmer Ben 👍

Just spray foam the holes or openings. It's easy enough to take off if you need and it'll be at least something to deter the rats. Just would have to check on it every now and again to make sure the rats didn't get through. Or silicone

My advice for that pond you have is in this order of importance:
    1) BIGGER POND just make it bigger it will be better (add rocks)
    2) add some aquatic plants to the mixture, stuff that grows natural locally, not from a pet store
    3) add snails, or better catfish to start remediating all that cyanobacteria/algae

Yeah...a biggee pond would definitely help. Aquatic grasses and plants woild definitely help to clean the water by taking up nutrients to avoid overgrowth of algae etc.
Not sure if duck weed would survive in Texas due to winter but that would be a good source of food for the ducks in a much bigger pond.
Hopefully uncle Ben can get connected with those people who does natural ponds on TV shows that could possibly design and make a pond that would be ecologically viable with a natural filtration system by allowing the water to be pumped into a higher small pond with aquatic grasses and gravel that would allow the water to be purified as it flows through the system and back into the bigger pond.

Hey Ben. I kept prairie dogs for 8 years, and although the spots on Mrs. Ounce is unfamiliar, I'd guess that her strange coat is just her shedding her summer coat and beginning to grow her winter coat. I bet in a few months she'll be a bit darker in color and definitely will have a denser layer of fur for those FREEZING Texas winters! Great content - keep it up! (I had no idea half your animals were named after rappers/memes!)

    • @drualasdove

For the rats I would recommend finding someone who can drill a hole in a metal sheet and fitting that to the area where the drain goes into the house. They can chew through most things otherwise. You might have to set out poison for the ones already in your wall unfortunately.
Also for the pond I'd recomend getting some native, emphasis on native, bottom feeders. The algea is not harmful and will likely lessen in a few weeks but bottom feeders will eat the duck poop and keep it from happening again. Putting in native fish will mean you don't have to worry about a heater and if it floods you aren't adding an invasive fish.
