      Why do you think LGY lost?
      It looks like he does not have answer to Ma Long controlling placement with backhand serve. I cannot see what LGY is trying to do. It looks to me like he is just trying to repeat same strategy, but hoping he will execute it better.

      Ma Long is playing a lot less aggressive nowadays, that's why he doesn't look as unbeatable as he used to be. He is relying on his tactics a lot more now, so it's all about if his tactics work or not because sheer power is no longer getting it done like it used to because others have more power. His matches before 2016 look night and day compared to this. No one knows who the number 1 right now truly is, it's all shaky. Fan Zhendong losing a lot, and Wang Chuqin losing to Ma Long and Ma Long losing occasionally to "worse" players. It's very interesting.

    This will go down as Ma Long’s best tournament performance of his career. His performance had been on a decline and looked like he was on his way out of the top. But he sweeps Wang on the SF on his unbeatable form and later Lin Gaoyuan being 0-3 down to win it all. China has a lot to consider on who they want to send for the Olympics. THE GOAT.

    • @eclipse1161
      @eclipse1161 26 днів тому +51

      @@francorastelli6308 Context matters for this imo. Ma Long for this tournament had no business winning. He was the heavy underdog. Sweeps world #1 WCQ who has dominated Ma Long as time went on and reverse sweeps LGY who recently has also dominated him. In terms of pure dominance and display of skill, there are a lot of wins that surpass this one in his career (like the 2015 WC you mentioned or 2016 Olympics). But in terms of greatness and overcoming adversity, this one is superior. Just my opinion.

      Think he was deliberately not going at 100% in the last two years exactly for this: to shine for Olympics. Needless to say things like WTT titles don't mean anything to him. Everything for his Olympic legacy. There is no doubt he retires in a few months so really hope he does win in Paris.

    What's amazing about him is that even at the age of 35, his playing style hasn't stopped evolving. In each scene, you can see Waldner's block, Niwa Koki's chop block, Kreanga's backhand, Ryu Seung-min's footwork, Fan Zhendong's Chiquita, and even Jhang Yining's forward attack & defence. He presents the history of table tennis like a panorama. He is table tennis itself.

      That looked like the strategy. Rather than overpowering LGY, he decides to use angles and block until he gets a chance to counter. It is so disheartening when you blast at your opponent and they just block it with ease.

      Yep, a lot of the match, he didn't play his strokes with his legs. The difference in technique and movement after he gets to match point is amazing. That said, the lack of such movement probably made it harder for LGY to read and predict his shots.

    Ma Long showing incredible adaptation to the difficulties. Some people said that Lin choked or also that this match is fixed, but strategy and adjustment was the key on this comeback because Lin was playing so good that Ma Long lost his confidence the same way Wang Chuqin did yesterday, but then in the 4th game he changed his playstyle and service which helped him recover the confidence and then play the same way as yesterday that led him to win 4-3, that is why pro matches should be always best of 7 and also that is why Ma Long is again, THE G.O.A.T!!

    • @xx765
      @xx765 26 днів тому +20

      Those who says this is fixed don't follow TT. China doesn't favor any player when what national athenm plays at the medal ceremony is already decided. And Ma Long does not need a meaningless(for him) WC title. If there is any doubt in who gets to play in Paris, it will be decided in some closed matches in Beijing not here.

      First of all, welcome to the sport. And yes, ma long is indeed a beast, he's the only male player in table tennis history to complete a double career grand slam, he's won by far the most international titles, for example several world champs and now three world cups, he's also won the asian champs 8 times (tt is a sport dominated by asia and especially china), and also the chinese national champs and cup several times. And lastly, he's also the player with the longest time on nr.1 (84 months), and the longest consecutive period on nr. 1 (64 months, from 2015 to 2017), which is also longer than the overall time of any other player. And that streak was only broken because of a change in the ittf point system. After that, he suffered a major injury, but still came back to win the world champs, olympic games, and also some national titles and also open titles. That is why they call him the greatest of all time, and the dictator. By the way, his name literally means dragon in chinese (long), which also fits to his other nickname, the dragon, and the description of a beast. Right now, he's already 35, so he's out of his prime for sure, not being able to move as quickly as before and all that stuff. His prime was prob in 2015, where he won his first world championship. Back then, he was practically unbeatable.

    Love how in the last 2 matches ma long changed his serve. He figured that the normal pendulum serve against the two lefties didn't work. Then he changed to reverse against both. It worked against wang, however lin still played great. Then he started using backhand serve against lin and never looked back. For the longest time he mostly used pendulum. love how he got out of his comfort zone at the worldcup. hope he finds a way against righties all well (especially against fan).
    Congrats Ma Long. Great fight

    ML was suffering from heavy top spin shots from Lin in the beginning and kept hitting it out of the table, but started adapting from the 3rd game by using slap shots rather than top spin smashes so that Lin hit it outside while trying to generate that top spin. And that tactic started working from the 4th game. It is ridiculous if you think that Ma Long was down 3-0 and 5-1 in the 4th game and then proceeded to win that game along with the other 3 to bag the trophy. Truly, the Dragon, the Dictator, the greatest of all time. No debate.

    Maan, this was one of the best matches I've ever watched. Even from the first game, from points like 4-8 and 5-8 (0:20) it looks like Ma Long is playing a little different, relaxed. The way he came back from 4-8, I felt Ma Long had this match in the bag. But for some reason even at 9-10 in the first 2 sets, he didn't close out like he usually would, still went for the crazy shots.
    And then it's set 5 he brings out the bh serve but he's down 5-1 and I'm thinking even if Ma loses 4-1, this was one his favourite games to watch for me. To watch him be relaxed and try the different things he wanted to try...
    Then something happens, suddenly everything he's trying is landing on the table. The flurry of points from 3-6 to 8-6 in set 5 is incredible! Anything he tries it goes. The point at 6:11, you wouldn't swing a bh so recklessly where if each point meant a lot to you.
    And that's it, Ma Long continues still trying various shots and it all lands and it isn't until 9-6 in the decider that you actually see him get a little tense, cause now he knows he can win.
    Some people might say that Lin choked, but I don't think he did. He played really well, didn't fumble any of his usual shots, fought well in the decider even up to 10-8, the only difference being that winning this meant a lot more to him, and he couldn't afford to experiment nor does he have the experience to. He just couldn't improvise against Ma Long.
    Ma says in the interview later that his goal for this tournament was to reach the semi finals which is why he was so relaxed in the finals.
    So yeah overall, even though I feel a little bad for LGY, it was an amazing match.
    And although there were a few hiccups in this tournament, thank you ITTF for bringing back the old angle, the matches were a lot more fun to watch this way!

  • @somaticHuman

    If you look closely, Ma never plays the ball out of position. He never reaches for the ball by tilting his body. His game always comes from his feet. And at this championship, he had the fastest legs. The best reaction of all players. And amazing reliability in the game, which was a key factor in his recent defeats. Who knew that it was not the hitting technique, but the receiving technique - that was the missing part that would distinguish him again among his team.
    Good health to the great Ma. I think that at this tournament he had the best form of his career. Simply because today he is playing with the fastest players on the planet who have ever been. He had a very unlucky tournament draw for him. But he overcame everything with dominance.
    I will remember this match as the best I have ever seen.

    Another thing I noticed is that he didn't get the points by his aggressive forehand smashes that much as he usually gets,he just placinghis shots to the opposite ends of the table.he barely moved in 5th and 6th set. Its all about experience and composure.
