Reminds me of going to grandparents as a wee child. They covered their cabin in boards to hide the logs and make it more airtight. Great grandpa made chairs so pa had the old lathe. Had the mule pulled hay rake sitting in the edge of the woods. It seemed like a rough life but they were always happy.
Sounds very similar. I'm sure it was quite the hard life. I have the tendency to romanticize that kind of life style. I'm sure though, there was quite a bit of "suck" to it too. Really nice tour Karl! Beautiful area! You read about these old settlements in books, but it's another thing to see the houses and buildings in person. Wonderful cabins- beautiful construction and preservation... I love seeing the original floorboards! Very cool chicken coop and such cool barn siding. It's pretty hard to imagine growing and preserving all your own food, not being able to run to the grocery store. Nice to see the old school house. Wow, great settlement and tour!! Oh I know. To have to do it all is difficult to imagine in our lifetime. They were difinitely hardy people! The park services have done really well at preserving the area I think. They bring in some Amish craftsmen from Indiana we were told to restore the buildings. It's just an amazing and peaceful place. If you ever get way out east I'd reccomend it. Amazing to see the settlement Karl ❤ its been on my list of places to see. Thank you for showing it to me here. Very interesting about the floor too. And the uses of yucca. Beautiful setting and views. The schoolhouse is awesome too. Definitely a good size cabin there at the end.
I hiked up there with Jim Hayes, Delmar Parks and Charlie the hiking Dog a couple of winters back. We came in from the other end of the settlement. No one else was there and everything was locked up so we didn’t see inside any of the structures. Because of the shortness of the winters days we didn’t get to stay long. I was fascinated by the Cabot with the short chimney, held up by a log on the outside of the house! It’s just beautiful up there! I would love to live in a cabin just like those. I’m going to have to make my way back over there and do the guided tour. Thanks Karl for the very well made video. Take care and be safe my Friend.
It's a tour well worth taking, and is small in size. Near perfect. 10 folks is as big as it gets. It' an informative tour as well. You, my friend would enjoy it.
