I never really saw SpongeBob as out of character in this one. He's always sort of been the type of guy to take instructions way too literally ("Dismantle the establishment" he takes to mean literally take apart the Krusty Krab), so he was under the belief that his party could only be a success if he followed the Plan Your Own Party kit to the letter, where it would go so much better if he just let everyone do what they want to without adhering to a strict schedule. Personally I never minded this episode much, but I do feel like it could easily have been a standard 11 minute episode and didn't really need to be a special. Still, it's got plenty of good moments, and Patchy is always a treat to see!

I still own the VHS as well! I was in 1st Grade when this episode came on. Man, hard to believe it's nearly 20 years old now. Though yeah, I do acknowledge it's pretty flawed. The end song was great though. Very underrated.

I watched Spongebob all the time as a kid. I remember this was one of the least played episodes and when I saw it for the first time it was the only episode that I hadn’t seen (other than The Paper, which also rarely played). It quickly became one of my favorite episodes. It felt unique compared to the others (which is a reason Squidward in Clarinetland and Spongehenge are also some of my favorites).

There's one cut scene of a black man whipping white slaves on what appears to be a slave ship. It's not OK to reference that on a kids' show even with the roles reversed. That's the biggest reason why you'll never see it aired on Nick again.
As a kid, I had seen almost all the SpongeBob episodes out at the time, with the exception of Valentine's Day and this. I don't understand why because Vailskibum said that it was heavily advertised... I recently watched it for the first time, and I loved it. It brought me back to my childhood, watching the sponge crack jokes for the first time.
Because they made Spongebob into an unlikable 🐬 to make cheap conflict for the episode cause they were too lazy to make an actual conflict for an episode at a house party.
At this point in the series' life, SpongeBob is just a cash cow for Nickelodeon. Cancelling it would be suicide for the network; that is the only reason why they keep it going (just like what Fox has been doing with The Simpsons).

Ironically enough, my favorite parts were the Patchy the Pirate portions, and still are, especially with Underwater Sun. So having more of those in the episode just made it even better.

You are not. I think this video exaggerates how "hated" it is. Look at the comments, at least half of them disagree with the video and say they like the episode
I don't think I've even seen this episode before hard to believe there are still pre movie episodes of Spongebob I've never seen.

This was the first ever SpongeBob episode I saw
yeah i hated the at the end when spongebob was arrested all because the cops were not invited and this makes me want to create my own purge where all crimes will be legal for one night from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. but there will be only 3 crimes that will remain illegal during my purge and they are murder, sexual harassments of any kind, and stealing other peoples legos. Do any of you think there should be a night like that?

TBH, I absolutely loved Party Pooper Pants. I think it's a pretty underrated episode of the show.
This is one of my favorite episodes, I loved it back then, the premise and the live action scenes :)
This episode still is way better than modern episodes
I refuse to consider 90% of the modern episodes (post-movie) to even be part of the SpongeBob canon.
SpongeBob’s House Party is always a fun time. My favorite part is the Underwater Sun song.
