    I’m glad to see somebody else with a portfolio that isn’t too color based. I’ve never been a fan on doing a lot of color in drawings growing up and knowing there’s a whole field of black and grey work I would love to take that route along with doing lettering

      Every studio is different when looking at portfolios and art they want to see but in my personal opinion as long as you have a go at a little bit of everything that's what's important and then keep drawing what you like and stick in your best pieces!
      Definitely practise lettering, there's a whole world to unfold in typography, and if that's where your passion is I believe you could go really far! Just keep practising and learning. :)

      @@taylahjadeart Trust I know all about the world of lettering most of the people I follow are lettering specialist lol. I always loved drawing letters doing graffiti and etc then once I found that people out here who are crazy with it in the tattoo lane it put me on to calligraphy and all the style of fonts out there you can add your own twist on. I definitely draw other things but if I can end up doing just letters in my tattoo career I would be fully happy doing those for people

    Hey! Congrats on landing the apprenticeship - that's amazing! Hope it's going well. It's so refreshing to hear that you have a part time apprenticeship as this Is something I was really worried about. Being 28 and wanting to finally follow this passion feels so risky as I have a mortgage, bills etc - so giving up a full time job to apprentice unpaid full time was so daunting. I couldn't figure out how to do it and still get by. Currently working on my portfolio before reaching out to studios - but this gives me hope that someone will consider a part time apprentice! The goal would be to switch over once I was tattooing enough to make a living, down the line :)
    Congrats again! Subscribed and will be looking out for future videos!

      Wow! It's fantastic to hear you're taking that next step in your life to put time into yourself and your future! I truly believe there will be shops out there with mentors that will understand circumstances and take on part time apprentices! Just don't give up in searching for one ok! I'll probably be working at my fulltime job for a long time before I can afford to rely on tattooing. But I am thinking about that every single day and it helps motivate me! Good luck Jordyn, I look forward to hearing about your journey! Thank you for supporting me 😁

    thank you for sharing this video, i picked up a machine a year ago and started to tattoo myself then gradually friends and then friends of friends etc. want to take it to the next level and try to get an apprenticeship and as a first step is getting a solid portfolio. i quite struggle with drawing daily and you mentioned that its very important. i was just wondering that is it all your original work or you copied existing art in order to practice? i only know how to practice well from life and photographs but tattoos are more stylized so could you share some tips for practicing certain styles?

    • @taylahjadeart
      @taylahjadeart  2 роки тому +1

      Hey Adam, thanks for reaching out! It's important to look at lots of reference images, especially with the different tattoo Styles. When I'm creating a design, I'll look at 5 or 6 different images and take from them a certain aesthetic - so my image is a collaboration of lots of images which makes it it's own design. Check out another video I made '10 tips for building your tattoo Portfolio' as I elaborate on everything a bit more!

    Do you have any suggestions on what to focus on while learning to draw, how important is learning anatomy, perspective etc when the goal is to became tattoo artist?
    Is it importatnt at all? Maybe its enough to know basics like forms, shading, and just draw a lot untill it looks good enough to start to learn tattooing?

    • @taylahjadeart
      @taylahjadeart  2 роки тому +1

      While we are learning to draw (which will never stop when we become tattoo artists!) From my personal experience and opinion I think its extremely important to start learning the basics so a bit of everything. In university I learnt the principles of design and the fundamentals of drawing. Understanding light source, shading, shapes as well as contrast, proportions, hierarchy will help so much when trying to understand how to put together a tattoo design! I have only covered these things briefly but I honestly can't wait to go into further depth with learning more as time goes on! There are lots of books you can buy or youtube will have just about anything! So although you won't 'need' these things, I think tattoo artists who review your portfolios will be able to tell if you understand anatomy, principles of design, fundamentals of drawing or colour theory. Some artists might be willing to teach and help you understand, but if you can do it on your own for your own benefit, you might see improvement in your own work! Hope that helped 😁

    Just getting into the industry. Did you happen to trace some of the designs in your portfolio or freehand? I’m having a hard time freehand drawing atm.

    • @taylahjadeart
      @taylahjadeart  2 роки тому +5

      Hey Kris! Everything in my portfolio is freehand, if anything, a couple of my digital stuff I drew first and then took a photo of it and traced it on procreate. In saying that, I practised a lot in sketch books before choosing a final piece to put into my portfolio. Once I was happy with one of my original sketches, if I didn't think it was refined good enough I actually traced over my own drawings on tracing paper, or using a light box to another piece of paper! A lot of tattoo Artists do this, including Holly Astral if you have seen her on UA-cam. When it comes to practise though, there is no harm in tracing if you're trying to understand the flow of the image, I usually do this when I practise portraits. And drawing the image upside helps a lot too! Because you draw what is 'there' not what you THINK is 'there'. I hope that helps!

    I'm hoping, I have an apprenticeship for tattooing coming up shortly (the mentor is training someone right now). I was wondering did you sign a contract for the apprenticeship? Also, stupid question the shop that I want to work at has piercing available too? Since I'm apprenticing, is it only for tattooing? Would the piercing be another apprenticeship? Sorry for so many questions, nobody in my family is into art or tattooing.

  • @sudaknot
    @sudaknot 2 роки тому

    This might be a dumb question but are these portfolio drawings all freehand drawings? Did you use references or trace at all? I guess I'm trying to understand to what extent one needs to be able to completely free draw these from their mind.

    • @sudaknot
      @sudaknot 2 роки тому

      Also, I'm aware not every single piece was done without reference.

    • @taylahjadeart
      @taylahjadeart  2 роки тому

      Hey Suda! Thanks for your question, it's definitely not dumb! It's important to look at reference images, so you can understand and reflect on how an object is. I personally haven't traced for my portfolio work but it's okay to trace in your drawing books, I have done that because it helps me learn! So definitely use references when you're drawing, try the grid method instead of tracing to help you improve enormously! Hope this helps :)

      Hey Madison, I've always drawn here and there when I was young, through school and university. When I decided I wanted to have a career in the tattoo Industry I put my pen to the paper and discovered I was shocking compared to the artists I aspire to. I turned to doing 4 things:
      - collecting and saving images of art I liked and just trying to draw as good as those images
      - youtube videos following Artists and Tattoo artists I like, some have follow along videos while others have time lapse videos! So I would just watch and try and draw along.
      - find short videos on artists Instagram as well and try to follow along their quick 1 minute videos that's hard lol..There is sometimes the option of patroen from these artists on instagram with monthly subscriptions of tutorials.
      - I signed up to Domestika where you can purchase short courses of many different types of art that you can choose from. I used this for mainly styles I just couldn't understand without going further into depth.
      I believe all these ways are beneficial but you've got to put in the time to sit down and learn.
