  • Before accepting your next fashion design "freelance" gig, make sure it's not illegal. I'm exposing the exploitative nature of these so-called "freelance" jobs in the fashion industry so you know the exact red flags to look for. Step away from that temp job in disguise and start looking for real remote freelance fashion design opportunities (or technical design, patternmaking, etc!).
When you think of freelance fashion design, you hopefully imagine the freedom to work on your terms, choosing the projects that excite you. However, the reality can be far from that. Brands often label temp jobs as freelancing, but they expect you to work as an employee without offering any of the benefits. This imbalance allows brands to save money while taking advantage of your talent and dedication. Shockingly, in some places, this working arrangement is actually illegal. These exploitative practices in the industry put true freelance fashion jobs in a bad light.
But don't worry, it's not all doom and gloom! In this episode, we'll discuss the true essence of freelancing and how you can carve out a successful career as a fashion designer (or technical designer, or patternmaker, etc!) on your own terms. We'll explore the freedom, flexibility, and control that comes with being a real freelancer. So, if you're ready to learn the difference between permalancing and true freelancing, and how to stand up for your rights in the fashion industry, tune in now and let's reclaim the true meaning of freelancing in fashion!

I see this type of setup in my area so often with sewing contractors! They're set up as 1099s but are required to be on location 40hrs a week at specific times, can't work from home or use their own machines, & have ZERO benefits, security, or protections. Really scary when you consider that contractors don't have protections from being overworked or sexually harassed because they are supposedly their own bosses.

It’s terrifying how much this goes on in our industry! And most people don’t even know they’re being taken advantage of.

Really enjoyed the video Jade was very inspiring as someone, like myself who went to fashion school and has had different iterations of my design career. I really liked what she said about feeling free to evolve her niche. When I first joined FAST not too long ago (5-6 months) I was so fixed on whether to choose to do flats or textile design, do I do Bridal/Evening or Resort Wear? As I've been in the program I have been so inspired by what I see others doing like Andress who offers her service as a Children's Wear Fashion Designer and provides everything from mood boards to flats and textile design. I was blown away and realized I could do the same thing for Resort Wear Brands. There are moments that I even respond to seamstress/sample maker jobs because I have a skill that is useful even though it is not my niche. So I am glad that she has been very fluid in growing her design business, even being a Bespoke Designer. I have always loved the thought of Made-to-Order designs and made an attempt at it early in my career but now that I've heard her experience I feel inspired to revisit it! Thanks!
