A top Melee player is retiring because of Nintendo...

- As if the Super Smash Bros. Melee community hasn't endured through enough over the years, it looks like we're on the cusp of losing another one of our players. It may or may not come as a surprise to you, but I found it interesting that the player named Nintendo as one of the reasons for his potential retirement.

Oh noooo, the guy who does nothing but complain and make the community more toxic is leaving... Whatever shall we dooo...
@@thattubaguy217 My exact thoughts. He basically led a crusade against both Jigglypuff and Marth players. He couldn't beat the top players of those characters, so he complained for weeks on end.
Nintendo gives more support internationally to Mario Kart and Splatoon domestically than Ultimate 💀
Good
Mario Kart and Splatoon’s competitive are exactly how Nintendo intended. Melee and Ultimate were supposed to be a party game first (or at the very least they can’t just skew fully on 1v1 legal stages no item such because they will be alienating the other parts of the game). That’s just how it is with Smash.
Respectfully even when they intend to do esport they drive players away
Sometimes it’d be better if they didn’t care instead of the negative influence they have over their communities
@sharkronical Why should they care? It’s not like players hack or mod the game in any way. And smash literally has customizable rules so that competitive players and casual players can both play how they like
Because unlike those two the smash community is filled to the brim with stinky incels!!!!
Legit, my reaction to this was
“Another top player is retiring?! And it’s Nintendo’s fault?!?!? N- oh it’s just Leffen?”
Same actually. It feels like he already kind of soft retired anyway kind of like M2k

💀💀💀
Lets be real. Leffen ain't retiring from shit. The second he gets tired of the new games he picked and misses melee he'll come back.
Let us have this
SHHHHHHHHH! Don't jinx it!
Nintendo might end up driving almost every top player away if they keep doing what they’re doing. What’s next? You have to buy a controller at the venue and can’t bring your own?

With Leffens extensive history of embarrassing johns and lightning quick twitter fingers, this just seems like yet another emotion fueled stance/response to consistently getting non-1st places/underperforming compared to the other players above him. Dude still practiced IRL at tourneys, streams, bootcamps, shit ton of netplay, and consistently felt comfortable and primed enough to enter the tourneys he did. It’s less about Nintendo, or more about his own personality/ego.
BESIDES, hes literally said the exact same shit about dropping Melee before (during a stretch of time while underperforming in Melee mind you) for other more FGC-centric games that he’s more confident he can win that doesn’t have Zain, Cody, Jmook or Hbox in it. Leffen has ONE first place finish in two years since dreamhack Rotterdam. Of course he’s gonna blame Nintendo. That’s the Leffen.
That's the Leffen.
Defs is a bit emotionally charged. But out of all the leffen rants this one makes the most sense to me. If I was him I'd absolutely drop melee and move to other fighting games. What's really left for him in melee? He's proven himself time and time again, got his coveted Evo he always wanted, and still has wins on every player in the top 10 right now.
You can shit on leffen all you like, but there's really no point in bullshit conjecture like this. Let the dude retire in peace, or come back if he wants. At the end of the day this is a video game and it affects no one but himself
@@Doublejump180 No you're right, there's nothing left for him in Melee. And I respect his choice to retire 100%
Sadly I don't agree with you about it not affecting anyone but himself. Leffen has consistently done damage to this community over the years and basically every bit of that has been caused by his hyper-inflated ego. He is a human being, yes, who has made mistakes. But if after thirty-five 2nd chances, you're still the same asshole, the community would probably be better off if you stayed gone.
Look leffen is douchey, but this is a very uninformed opinion. He won 2023’s biggest invitational by beating Hbox, Cody, and Zain x2 and he just got fifth at Genesis X where he beat Moky and only lost to Zain and Cody. If anything, given the fact he’s playing multiple other games right now, he’s been over performing.
Even then, why is he retiring to play another game? It seems way more likely that there is less personally on the line playing Melee where he’s been a fixture for years than a totally new game where he’ll be completely unproven.

Like him or not (i dont) leffen is fundamental to the ecosystem of pro melee. He helps push the meta and consistently performs exceptionally making for good viewing experience for spectators.
@@bigf0ot25 Additionally, it may be a sign of things to come. If HBox's theorized Riot Platform Fighter comes to fruition, it would be hard to justify (money-wise) competing at a high level in either Melee or the next Smash game when you would be likely to make more money playing the game with dev support.
Pushes the meta while he pushes away potential new and longtime players and contributes to the scene's perceived and actual toxicity.

I was worried, but it's Leffen, he should've been banned years ago, if he's stepping away himself, well finally. No need to watch the rest, thanks Hbox
I think smash really is slowly dying. Not very many people enjoy playing a game competitively if the company that made the game doesn't support the players. That's the exact reason I stopped smash and moved on
Smash despite its popularity never had a large prize pool due to its mostly grassroots efforts especially in recent years. I think especially with melee having half its roster not even reaching top 8 at a super major made the mostly stagnant meta undesirable for Nintendo to support. I would be interested in competing in locals but I would never play competitively nationally and pay out of pocket to fly to tournaments. You would have to side hustle unless you’re a top 10 ranked player. Even then the majority of money that people like Hbox gets is through streams.

Leffen was a really great player, but he is just such an unpleasent douchebag. Its one less player I'll be rooting against, but his presence did make Melee more interesting, because he was a very good player.
Melee's old guard unfortunately just keep on dropping the game. It definitely makes me a bit sad to see, even if I don't care much for Leffen as a person. Because, love him or hate him, he was a pretty big part of Melee and Melee won't be the same without him.
Huge W
Finally that scourge is gone 🎉
isnt this kinda of a good thing?
removing toxicity from the community is a good thing in my eyes
Used to pray for times like this
And this exemplifies the biggest tragedy: you have what's arguably one of the greatest fighting games of all time being slowly strangled to a slow, ignominious death by its creators. And this is after 20 years of seeing rival publishers create a roadmap of profitable tourneys, community goodwill and excellent rollback code.
At this point, I firmly believe that Melee will never die--but it can come dangerously close, and if that happens, it'll be because of Nintendo mismanaging everything that Melee could have been.
its a shame people cant see this. people are too blinded by their least favorite player taking a break from a game they tangentially follow to be able to recognize this.
Leffen backing away is honestly a W, one less thing to see him yap in.

Well, this comments section is going to be civil.
Good. Fucking. Riddance.
If nintendo would at least just say "we're not going to interfere with the tournament scene, just go away and don't bother us", it would be amazing for the tournament scene. Sponsors could operate without worrying about the potential nintendo boogeyman lurking in every corner all the time.

Gonna keep it a stack bro, the smash scene's BIGGEST detriment ain't even nintendo in my eyes, it's the fact that the several different sub communities do eachother so damn dirty. Melee throwing PM under the bus and ultimate doing the same to melee, it's a mess.
I went to a pokemon VGC regional with my brother and legit saw EVERYTHING pokemon related in the venue. From the tcg, to the games, to even spinoffs and I thought to myself "man, smash would NEVER do this kinda thing. They're always at odds with eachother." Does this solve everything? I hear a lot about toxicity or whatever in Melee, asking as an outsider
I started following Leffen on twitch after he won an evo or whatever in strive as happy chaos. now that i've watched several of his streams, he definitely comes across as someone who is most interested in winning while he's still professionally able so it makes sense to me that he wouldn't want to stretch himself across multiple esports, especially with smash being on the lower end of the FGC financial winnings spectrum. If he was just a retired pro streaming for fun it would be different i'm sure.

I hope it goes well for him. I hope some other year down the line he’ll be a top player again, not just an honorable mention
damn a lot of people watched the first 30 seconds and left comments. they just ignore the real financial issues in smash and potential long term implications of these issues.
sure melee and smash ultimate will always exist, but when only a handful of players can make a long-term living from the scene, there is going to set a hard ceiling on where these games can go.
Leffen's leaving? Oh NO!
Anyway

Unironically a great thing for melee and the smash community as a whole
Ultimate has such a huge install base that if nintendo ever decided to truly capitalize off of it they could use the extra generated funds to subsidize melee kinda like how the NBA subsidizes the WNBA due to it having a lower install base
