I live next to Jeff Leisk when he was part of Team Honda. Used to give my kids his used riding gear. One of the nicest guy you could meet. Use to build campfires at night with a number of riders.
Was there aged 10 at my first motocross event, I watched from the bottom of the back straight. The roar of the crowd was huge while leisk and moates were duelling, something the video doesn't quite capture. It was a thrilling final. Needless to say Jeff was my idol after this. Was very fortunate to meet him in 1985 when he'd gone to Honda, and was testing/ racing at the track at outtrim. Surprised this footage exists and that it's as clear as it is.
I actually like this track better than today's boring "cookie cutter" freeway fast jump fests,---that have about 7 or 8 top riders on the injury list right now.
hard to believe Liesk was railing that old 82 yz 250J around like that. I have a couple of them, radiators on the handlebars, not particularly reliable. But his bike looks like it was tuned!!!!!!
His bike may be the only one tuned well. The smoke at the starting line is like a amateur race, with amateur jetting. I had the 1982 YZ250 also. It was the first bike I raced. Remember how the water cooled steer tube would spring a leak, and wash out the lower steering bearing grease all over your front fender? I also blew a shock on that bike, and I think I bent some linkage bolts, but the motor, (ported by a local guy), sure got me good starts.
@@EarthSurferUSA I am actually restoring one of mine right now, been working on it for a few weeks, the power valve was stuck in the closed position, just took it apart and fixed that. I re-routed the coolant lines, tried to get the correct seals but they wouldn't hold due to the pitting on the inside of the stem/frame. It runs pretty good now but I need to jet it and it will be a bit crisper, running a bit fat now. I actually have an 82 yz125 also and a 1983 yz250, both restored.
@@brandonthompson8411 The 82 YZ125J was the 1st full sized MX bike that l was ever on.. I still remember the 1st time that l swung my leg over it as a 10 year old. It was so exciting to me because l had a YZ80E at the time. I'll own one, one day 4 sure ! Are you an Aussie ? We got the better looking white and red models... Better looking for me anyway 😃
Went to a few of these at olympic park during this era , fantastic memories, riders and bikes ... even scored seats in VIP boxes and quite a load of B&W A4 size photos of the events, spewing ... i've no idea where they went to :'( looking at it now, gee's the track looks pretty crap lol
the 85 yz250 with the power valve was a beast, but I didn't like the handling of it, I had a 85 rm250,it was supreme, never raced it but should have, maybe not as powerful as the others but handled like a dream.
Al depends on if you like the inside line or outside.... headshake or stability, take your pick. For 125 or 250 handling-Kawa and Yam were similar. Honda and Suzuki were similar. Back then, you sat in a Yami, and on top of a Honda. I hated Hondas and won "A" class on Yamy's. Back then, Honda rear shocks were superior though. KYB / Yam were harsh in stock form. Always felt like I was going over the bars on a Honda frame. The finned Yamy open classers were a pile of crap though- blew up a couple of them - jetting nightmare.

I hope that they kept that riding gear !
Do you want to sell any of it ? As I'm a collector of MX and BMX stuff...
What memory. 🔥🔥✌️😉 I got to meet him in the Pontiac Silverdome HRC Honda. Was same way with us. Class Act ✌️😉
What a race. The dual between Leisk and Moates - Epic.
I miss Marty he was such an awesome guy and so damn inspiring he definitely was extremely involved in my decision to turn pro.
Wow, great race! Was really pulling for Leisk there!
Chuck Sun is still Awesome!!!

A video cant capture this epic race but it is still great to watch. It was my first of many motocross events and I was 13.
Loved watching Chuck back then, especially when he was blasting off on the 500's!
Jeeze how old is Jeff Liesk, I thought he was a young guy,he's been around for ever.....
back when warriors wore boot savers, and used strange stopping devices :D ...cheers for posting this.
Eric Blair I never came to terms with those things
those YZ -J's were evil handling things
Jimmy Ellis was another big name US rider that used to like racing in Au.
I was in that crowd

Old Ken Dobson should have retired that Night , his eyes weren't working that well Smarty.
Neil Crompton........Ha! :-)
You don't like Neil?
Those Yamahas were the worst bike on the track. God awful. I rode one. I switched to Hondas in 1985 and never looked back. I hate Yamahas to this day.
So did Jeff Liesk, he won most of his races on Honda's
