  • Lots of work around the sixths, sevenths, and octaves. Pedalling for finger exercise (ouch!), and octave grooves disco-ey style. Not sure if it sounds very disco.. And the last bit of this section was chromatic approaches.
This is part of Unit 6 of Ariane Cap's Cohort- from her book Music Theory for Bass Players.
Then I dived into a 1 minute song from SBL (Scott's Bass Lesson). Challenging but tested myself the next day.
The question I asked in the video-- here's the answer:
The 'triangle' comes first... if you know your jazz notation :)
    Feedback always welcome.

So much right about this video. You're enjoying yourself. You know when to slow down. You have long skinny fingers ❤ You're working with 5-line staff from the start. You have a decent or good bass, comfy strap and strap locks. You're awesome! I'm happy when people learn an instrument, and bass is one of my faves.

I think that you must be a mentor or teacher because you describe the points very precisely. I must add to your comment about the bass though... it fits me like a glove, and sounds brilliant on the guy that I bought it from :)
I'm happy I found this instrument -- and it's not too heavy either!
I have long skinny fingers.. oh! never thought of my hand that way, but I'm guessing it's positive :)

At 2:33, the way your 3rd finger supports fretting with your pinkie is the double bass technique I mentioned before.
I'm not big on the one finger per fret thing. I mostly use double bass style because it "tames" wild fingers. Keeps the fret fingers flat in a natural way.

@@bassrumblings Doing great! BTW, the African bell patterns in the dance vids are good rhythms to pedal along with. Those bells are the seed of all drumming.

@@rothloaf1980 I'm hoping that playing the African drums will help my bass.. it must get mingled up in those synapsis somehow:)

@@bassrumblings I started by merely tapping my hand along with the bell patterns. I'm no expert on african drumming, but i can pedal bass along with the bell and be in the groove.
But don't ask me to explain the complexity of 12/8, 3 and 6 over 4 stuff... 🤔

I really loved the way you video yourself to analyse your playing, that's dedication. Love the bass too what is it?.

    • @bassrumblings
      @bassrumblings  2 місяці тому +1

Thank you. I guess it is... dedication. I picked up this instrument (I'm playing my Ibanez) later in life, and I didn't want the rest of my life to learn it adequately- so analysis is the quickest way of reducing the chance of repeating mistakes!
Well, that' s my theory, at any rate :))

    Hi Natelie,
I noticed that sometimes when you fret with your left pinky, your left middle finger curls up a little bit ('flying fingers' they called it?), these youtube videos could be nice study material for left hand fretting techniques (sorry I won't include the links to the videos, I think youtube doesn't like links in a comment):
    1. Channel: BassBuzz | Video name: 5 Levels of Bass Finger Exercise (Beginner to Advanced)
this is directly relevant to what I mentioned above, so watch this one first probably!
    2. Channel: BassBuzz: | Video name: Are You Fretting the Wrong Way? (Bass Fingering Showdown)
this video discussed the pros and cons of two different fingering philosophy (one finger per fret & simandl technique), and when to adapt which, good thing to consider when working out fingerings to a bassline. These videos really helped me (I would totally recommend them to anyone)! I hope you could give them a shot (Josh/BassBuzz has a lot of other amazing instructional videos)! Happy practicing!
    Sincerely,
    Yile

Also, you could try also using more pad of your fingers when you pluck with your right hand, you get a fuller tone (more bass & low mid) compare to plucking with more toward your tip, for songs not super fast, it is general doable speed-wise to dig in to the bass more (you could turn the volume down a touch so that you can dig in more without worrying about being too loud). Of course, this depends on what you are going for, but it is probably a good idea to try out different tones you can get from altering your plucking touch. Cheers!

That is so helpful... thank YOU for taking the time to write this... I'll definitely check out the videos. The curl... I'm really trying to put my attention to that. Videoing oneself is super helpful- I suggest everyone should do this.
You picked up on the right hand-- I was watching this again, and felt the same way as you. I was doing it well (there's another video of me and concentrating on this) but obviously not I'm not consistent at this.... but thanks for the reminder. It does sound different, and feels different too!
      Cheers!

@@bassrumblings Try lowering the body and raise the neck of the bass (like classic guitar), that works for me. It will give more strength to the fingers with less effort , to both hands. ua-cam.com/video/7anFuDXV2j8/v-deo.html
