Thanks for this, I've done solar dyeing by adding dye to damp yarn, wrapping it in plastic wrap and letting it sit in the sun all day. I hadn't thought of using a jar, I'll try it out too. We have very hot days in Australia so it'll be good to use that heat! 🌞
In more temperate weather, you can leave the yarn on the dashboard in a car to get some extra sun heat. Just plastic wrap would also work really great. :D
Awe, thanks! He loves to watch me wash the yarn (I'm usually doing this has his little brother is going to bed so he hangs out off camera.) This time he was SUPER excited. I think I'm going to have to let him try this sometime soon.
This is such a fun technique! I think I'm going to have to try this even though I am not a yarn dyer! This is just so intriguing. I have the Mason jars and just have to get the yarn and food coloring. Can't be any easier.
That blue is beautiful! I recently did solar dyeing but dropped the food coloring on top of the water to let the colors spread down. However, seeing yours, I think I need to try your method too. I love this unique color way.
I can't believe I haven't seen this video yet! That looks like a quart jar. I'm wondering how this method would compare with a 2-quart jar or even a gallon jar where the yarn would not be so compressed in the jar. This looks like something that would work quite well in the South.
I have some 2 qt jars but haven't used them yet. I think that if the yarn had more space to move around then the colors would even out a bit more... but this is something I can test for sure!
I'm not sure if someone's already said this, but you could also put the yarn in a pan with simmering water while its still in the jar instead of taking the yarn out of the jar, putting into a jelly roll, and nuking it. This might be an easier way to set the last of the dye with less of a chance of messing with the way its dyed. The yarn looks great BTW.
I thought of the idea because my Grandma makes jams and stuff and cans them, that's how i know the mason jars can withstand a bit of heat. She actually made salsa with a few other family members not that long ago.
Well, if you use the Jakard Acid dyes, you can still do this in your dye pot. Just make sure you have the mason jar how you would in your canning pot with the water. You'd just have to make sure you mark the jar in some way to show you that you've used it for non food grade dye. The main thing is how high up the jar the water goes when you simmer it. My grandma just uses whatever pan she thinks is good when she doses the jars when canning.
The blue washing out may not be because of the heat source. It may just be excess dye that would not have joined with the yarn anyhow. That was a lot of dye in a small space. The yarn can only bind to so much dye.
Food coloring lasts great for a long time. ua-cam.com/video/oftsMXnzrug/v-deo.html Food coloring, and other acid dyes, can run a bit in hot water, but when washed in cool water they're very color fast. Food coloring is less light fast than commercial acid dyes that were developed specifically to dye fiber. ua-cam.com/video/izhOyrUJ6Ys/v-deo.html
I’m curious how the end result would’ve looked if you had put the yarn in dry. Added a few drops of blue. Added a bit of water. Then added some yellow. Added some yellow. Then more water then added black then topped it off with more water. I’m typing this comment without having watched this entire video though. Lol
I'm a bit curious too. I started with some water at the bottom (and the yarn was dry when I put it in), but like the thought of layering the yarn and dye and then adding water all from the top at the end.

I love your cheering section! ❤️
Thank you!! 😊

I love the way this turned out! It's like two different skeins in one. Great colors.
Thank you so much!
Very nice! And I love your cheerleader in the background!

This is possibly my fav so far. I am coming into summer and have 20 skeins I can play with!
It was so much fun to play with, although a bit hard to be patient as I desperately wanted to peek while I was waiting!
I'm in Oklahoma, so I could do this all summer long, in the shade! Nice job!
I'm waiting for summer longingly right now... although some snow would be nice so I could do some snow dyeing.... ;)
May I tumbs up twice! great colouring ! I do dyeing in the sun with vegetables. Colours are more neutral!
Thank you!

I want to try more color on the top next time. ;)
You have a wonderful cheerleader!
Thank you! :D

Yay! Best of luck.
Breaking Violet in this method would be amazing!
OH YES!

Thank you so much, Parvati! This is a great suggestion for if it does need a little more heat. :D

I should totally do this in my canning pot...

Cool experiment
Thanks, Jackie!
Have nice day
I would try it with wet yarn in jar and a straw to layer the colors.
Using a straw (or a dropper/syringe of some kind) is a great idea! Or maybe a squeeze bottle into a straw... you've really got me thinking!
Ooooo! I wanna try that!
It was hard to be patient, but super fun to keep running out to look for changes. ;)

Exactly! Both of these are good options. The bleeding did not diminish the final color, so that's good.
Did you know you've got this really cute thing that goes on with your mouth when you speak, and you have a very naughty grin, I
love your videos.
Oh thank you! I love that some of this fun comes across. :D
Did you try to solar dye coolaide?
I haven't... yet!
Ooooo‼
💜💙💚💛🧡❤
Solar dyeing is a lot of fun since you never know quite how it will turn out.
Could you use this technique using roving?
Yes!
Does food coloring with yarn last through washing’s? Does it fade or run when washed?

What time at solar?
I filmed this in August 2018 in Massachusetts if that helps.
This color way should be called Reef. You have the Water the sun and the oral colors.
I LOVE this color name!
