The way I see this song is: Alesia died and Alec has gone off the deep end now that he’s lost the love of his life, he’s in that stage of grief where he just wants her back, acting like he hears her, that she’s still there. At the end of the song he comes to the realization she isn’t coming back.

I really have soo much sympathy for Alec, and to the people that were let down by the person they were genuinely care about. All they wanted if you're ever gonna leave him/her/me is to please just don't cut me off. 'Cause that's bad, just lie to me little by little, spend time with me just a little, 'til it finally sinks to me that we can no longer be with each other. Because everything has changed.
