Ivan Van Sertima wrote about the possibility of Mansa Musa actually making it to the New World in his book "They Came Before Columbus". The native people tell stories of meeting a ship filled with black people, wearing white clothing. Also, he points out that the tips of their spears contained gold which was identical in chemical composition to that of people in West Africa. Further research in modern times proves that Africans reached the New World hundreds or perhaps thousands of years ago. French is not a historian so perhaps this is why he did not include these facts in his book.
