  • The full unedited version of my interview with Mark Clampin, the Director of the Astrophysics Division at NASA. We chatted about the Habitable Worlds Observatory, including how it will be different to the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), and how the plan is to use it to take a direct images of Earth-like exoplanets and study their atmospheres for biosignatures. I also couldn't help but ask Mark about his career path and how he became NASA's Director of Astrophysics.

👩🏽‍💻 I'm Dr. Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford (Christ Church). I love making videos about science with an unnatural level of enthusiasm. I like to focus on how we know things, not just what we know. And especially, the things we still don't know. If you've ever wondered about something in space and couldn't find an answer online - you can ask me! My day job is to do research into how supermassive black holes can affect the galaxies that they live in. In particular, I look at whether the energy output from the disk of material orbiting around a growing supermassive black hole can stop a galaxy from forming stars.

The first thing I thought of was just how huge NASA must be to develop and accomplish the missions it does with the limited resources NASA often has to contend with. The expansion in the roughly 75 years of NASA has impacted human knowledge so highly, and our expanding yearning for more knowledge in what Carl Sagan described as a "candle in the dark".

When you move forward in your field of interest, please include levels of radiation on planets.
Life cannot survive in high levels of radiation.
When "habitable" planets are discovered, there is no regard for levels of radiation.

How did they know that Dimorphos, with its slower smaller orbit will not eventually impact Didymos itself thereby changing its orbit and making it more of a hazard to us, when the result of the impact was not predictable.

Hi Dr. Becky, great interview! I've got a black hole question. How is it that a spinning black hole rotating at say 80+% the speed of light coliding with another similary sized and rotating black hole doesn't disintergrate with their combined momentum? Doesn't the momentun of both have to be conserved? Where does all that extra energy go? Why isn't all the material around the event horizon thrown off revealing the singularity, or Elvis or the Loch Ness Monster or whatever's in there?!? Please help me wrap my brain around this.

    Men / Queer Men / Non-binary / Trans-women / Women
Trans-women & women have different pelvic anatomy. Men & non-binary people also have different pelvic structures.
Discussions about gender identities must be taken seriously, as these definitions affect public spaces & others' lives. Pelvic qualities can be used to decide who can go to which bathroom or play in competitive sports.
Identities aren't just words. They have lasting & irreversible consequences to those who choose to transition. People under 21 shouldn't be able to make such radical changes to their bodies - which often require surgery."
