• Boudicca & The Great B...
Somerled was a powerful warlord who forged a Norse-Gaelic kingdom in the mid Twelfth Century, and for a time looked to become the supreme power in the north of Britain.

🌹 This video was EPIC! Thank you for this wonderful information! I find it facinating! 😁🐶⚘👋
Really interesting history with the Lords of the Isles; didn't know about how it was formed and Somerled's role at all! The sort of hybrid culture of Norse and Gaelic in both Scotland and Ireland is an interesting mix the consequences of which we're still living with today. One example is the famous brand of Scottish haggis called Macsween which is mixture of the Gaelic "Mac" meaning "Son of" and the Norse name "Swein."
Really enjoyed this one, excited to see what you'll cover next,
Hilbert
Fascinating tidbit
His direct descendant formed arguably the greatest of the Highland Clans Donald (MacDonald). They went on to be the Lords of the Isles and could easily muster armies over 10,000. All transported by Birlinns (small longships) Also Dougall (McDougall’s) , and MacRuaraidh
@@aldoscotzi2261 I'm descended from Mac Ruaraidh. 😁
I am a branch of the Macdonald clan and I’m living in Canada ! Makes me want to travel back to my homelands 🏴 and 🇮🇪
Fascinating & true. Though with the exception of the Outer Hebrides the majority of the ancestry & lineage of the western Scottish Highland clans was Gaelic & Pictish, with the Gaelic language & culture remaining predominant & intact even after generations of Norse Viking attacks, predations, killings, colonizations & overlordship. Gaelic still reigned supreme, while the blood of the ancient Picts still pumped strongly & primevally (the same Picts who kept Rome at bay!).
Was there Norse Viking influence in many areas of late Medieval Scots Highland culture? Of course! To a great degree. As those marauding raiders played a significant role in the formation of the Lords of The Isles. A powerful role. Though the blood of the Gaels & Picts still beat fiercely through the veins of those far off Scottish Highland clansmen/their early progenitors.
Otherwise I greatly enjoyed reading your words!
So fucking proud to be a MacDonald
Same.
High-key using this to revise for my Gaelic-History exam tomorrow...

my maternal grandmother is from the line chieftains related directly to somerled. This was such a fascinating video that taught me more then i knew about my ancestor Somerled.
I'm also connected to Somerleds line through my paternal grandmother. Through the Macdonald line.
What up fam!
Me too, on my grandfathers side it traces back to him. It was documented that one of them is buried at the church in Iona.
I am connected to somerled thru my father. Also connected to the massacre of Glencoe.
@@corytucker6668same except through my maternal grandfather
On the side: The present resider in the White House is a descendant of the Norse-Gaels, as his mother was a MacLeod from Lewis. Leod coming from liotr, meaning 'the ugly one' in Norse...
It was only inevitable for the Norse-Gaels to rule the world... :P

Recent genetic tests on Somerled's descendants confirms that his paternal ancestry was almost definitely Norse (Norwegian specifically)
It's weird I'm english from england and my grandad is Scottish native from the macdonald clan and my Dads side have a Irish family name and we got roots with somerled
@@corablunt-zy2be Is he your direct paternal ancestor (fathers fathers... father)? If so you probably carry a Norse lineage
@@captainfury497 probably yes from my great granddads fathers
@@corablunt-zy2be You can verify it with a regular DNA test to find out the y-chromosomal haplogroup, I think most kits include this but some don't(you'll have to test a male relative like brother or father if you're a woman since only men carry this marker) Somerled belonged to haplogroup "R1a" which is not common for Celts or Anglo Saxons. If you belong to "R1a" then you're most likely his direct descendant
Nice to get information on my 23rd great-grandfather!

Not as I was taught , Somerled was assassinated and his father was Thane of argyle and his mother was Norwegian , daughter of the king of mann , at its peak the lordship was the third most powerfull title in the british Isles
His father (or direct paternal line) was almost definitely Norse, Norwegian more specifically as confirmed by DNA tests on his descendants
@@captainfury497 The source of the claim is from a Scottish writer and Historian Nigel Tranter . And if Rollo could become Doke of Normandy I suppose Somerland`s father could have done something similar despite what my family claim . In the end were all Jock Tamson`s Bairns .
It is of my understanding from family research and DNA test, Somerled is the great grandson of Harald the III "Hardrada" Sigurdsson of which I am a descendant of both. Appreciate this and all your other videos.
Where did you find the information of Somerled being the great grandson of Harald Hardrada?
@@radaroriley8054 I am getting my info from the family line. Harold had a daughter named Asta Harolddotter and she married into the family to Imergi Somerledson in 1080 then they had a child named Gillebride Thane of agyll then the family named to Macgillebrideson for the blending of Celtic and Norse both meaning Son of then the birth of Rogvald Somerledasson . By the 1200 the name changed to McDonald after his son Donald Ragnaldsson had children. I could keep goinging for another 20 plus generations. Hope this helps in your research.
I wonder... Somerled could be the same word as Sommer- ledding; Ledding meaning assembling of warships in Danish.
Anders Hoegild I thought it meant summer sailor / or raider . Ragnald ( summer sailor ) Somerled. I’m actually related to him through the MacDonald clan , the first Donald ( chief of the United isles , was Somerled . The only other person in history that out matched his descendants is genghis khan . So old Somerled did a fair bit of shagging in the wintertime. Lol
@@shanekonarson Summer Pirate/raider is what I thought too
@@johnmc128 agreed John. Where do us McSorley's fit in?
I think your date for Somerled's rising may be a bit off...late. He married Ragnhild, the daughter of Olaf, King of Man and the Isles in 1140 and he would have conquered much of Argyll and the Isles by then.
Proud descendant of this man. Interesting family history.
My name is Andre Reinaldo Godfrey. I learned something from your video. Good work.
I love my history
……..Back in 1958 I spent a day in Oban Argyle Scotland......Decades later I found out that I had been in the area than was home to the origin of my name (McDowell---sept of the McDougal clan)…...The McDougal/McDowell name means "Son of the dark stranger"...….This 'dark' referred to the dark hair of the Danes......The light haired Vikings were the Norwegians...…………...Always since have regretted that I didn't have that knowledge while I was in the area...………..Another side of my family I have traced back to the Isle of Man, who then moved on to Ireland and much later, to the American colonies
Clan McDougall. We have a fasinating history.
The material culture, burials and DNA suggests a Norwegian settlement of Orkney , Hebrides , Man and Ireland . The 'dark foreigners' likely does not refer to hair colour or being Danish or Norwegian , but simply refers to the new Norse forces who defeated the 'fair foreigners' , (the older Norse settlers) in Ireland in 851 . This coincides with the earliest known Norse burials in Scotland . I suspect the Finnghaill and the Dubhgaill were both from Norway but we need more Viking DNA from Norway , Scotland and Ireland to be sure.
@@bernicia-sc2iw I was repaeting what I had read in numnerous articles....I'll dio some more reading..... References for reading material??
Recent genetic tests however indicates that Somerled(and thus his descendant clans including Macdougals) was probably of Norwegian descend than Danish
Clan McDougall still going srong.
As are most clans.
I am a decendant of the McDonald's of Sleat and Glengarry and also MacDougalls who are all decendants of Somerled..
So it seems my request to have you cover some Crovan dynasty history was a bit premature. Somerled is a really interesting figure, and you did the topic of his career justice by not telling only the nationalised "folk hero" rendition of the tale, which also seems to have been what has happened to Brian Boru as well.
For another topic, it might be interesting to discuss the "modernization" of Scotland you briefly mention, and the "Norman Conquest" in Scotland, and the settlement of the Anglo Saxons there.
What's the name of the music track?
my primary school was called Somerlead because it was on Somerlead street.
Nice!
Just read about this in my family tree! How fascinating

My ancestors were there! Settled, Isle of Man and other locations throughout the UK. That's what most Vikings were good at besides the battles. Somebody invent a true time machine! I want to go back in time!
My 17th time great grandfather is somerleds grandchild
You could talk about the later lordship of the isles and the Council of the Isles. That ended in the 1460s. They had allied themselves with the English before the War of the roses but when that kicked off the Norman Scottish king ended the lordship.
I'm going through my family history and found this guy after days of inputting info on Ancestry. Interesting!

When I had my DNA tested a few years ago, I was informed that I was predominately Norse Viking and not Anglo Saxon as I always believed and Somerled was mentioned in the report sent to me as one of my ancestors. I knew very little about him until I saw this video clip. Thank you very much for the information. It's much appreciated.

Hey mate, what's the name of the good old Celtic folk song?
I have read that Scottish autosomnal Dna in Shetland and Orkney is still coming up as mostly Gael but with about 30% Scandinavian supplement. I would think as one went down the Hebrides the Scandinavian part might get a little lower. Is this an accurate general picture?
Yes, that is likely correct. I know of someone in Canada with 4% east coast Norwegian genes from an ancestor from Skye.

Glad to see a summary of Somerled's career from an impartial viewpoint without the Gaelicisation of him and his achievements. The tall folk stories and genealogy going back to 'Godrey macFergus' and 'Conn' date from long after his death and are likely propaganda . His paternal line was Norse , he had a Norse wife , some of his sons had Norse names , the Norse ancestry of his McDonald descendants was celebrated in praise poetry until the Bruce and the wars of independence . Also , looking at some of these comments regarding ancestry : I suspect everyone with Scottish ancestry is a descendant of Somerled .
The oral tradition has always been that his father was Gaelic and his mother was Norse. Do you not see the irony of complaining about Gaelicisation (of a man who most likely spoke Gaelic anyway) and then claiming that all of that is just propaganda and he's actually just Norse? To me it just sounds like you specifically want him to be some full blooded Norseman which is totally improbable and unrealistic in a region where the two cultures intermarried for 200 years and they all spoke Gaelic. You have no actual proof that his paternal line was Norse whatsoever.
The only thing I'm aware of that can even remotely claim to be of any proof is some genetic investigation done on haplogroups of men today who claim to be a direct descendant which assumes that a) they're completely correct and have no errors in a family line for 900 years and b) that for over 900 years worth of generations there wasn't one woman in their 900 years who was ever unfaithful. Not at all firm evidence.
i assume the norse gaels assimilated to the fierce picts
Tbh i've only heard of this guy cause he's at the top of my family tree
"Very Interesting Video"
The Gaelicisation process is interesting. What did the Hebrides speak before Gaelic?
Yes Matthew McVeagh, I agree. Norse was spoken alongside Gaelic in all of these areas at the time, also in Iceland which was settled to a large extent at this time and from this area. Two out of three initial females in settlement Iceland were Gallic and almost one third of men as well. In Iceland however Norse prevailed and there are few traces of the Gallic language present in Icelandic, only in the DNA. What the reasons are for this, is a good question.
Matthew
Based on the place names, family names and historical documents it is clear that Old Norse was used in the Hebrides, probably along with Gaelic, until Gaelic eventually became the only language especially after 1266 when Norway lost control of the Islands. However the Gaelic spoken in the Hebrides has been modified by Old Norse and is distinctly different from the Gaelic spoken on the Scottish mainland. The Gaelic speaking mainland Scots called the Hebrides "Innse Gall" which means Islands of the strangers (Norse). Caithness is also known as Gallaibh meaning "among the Strangers" for the same reason.
I think the clan McKinnon is of Norse origin.
Gaelic then Norse and Gaelic I assume
So nobody thinks they spoke a Brittonic language before Gaelic?
I read something that it was a warrior Christian priest that did Somerled in, cutting off his head. Maybe someone can confirm.
We don't know how he died, assassination seems the most likely. Although the perpetrator isn't known, the list is long...
Trying to condense this story into 5 minutes is impossible and consequently this account omits a huge amount of detail we do know, in favour of questionable statements that serve to drive the narrative.

MacLeod REAL king the isles lol we're still there where the hell is he ahahahajaj Lewis FOREVOR woooooo
sorry but this isn't accurate account at all . once again you completely disrespect the Scots Gaels . Somerled WAS a Gael , The Scots Gaels created Scotland , The Scottish throne had become Normanised the saxonised and they felt seperate to it . The Vikings who settled on the Scottish Islands adopted Gael Culture not the other way about , this IS a story about a Gael taking control of the Scottish Islands .
But we don't know what ethnicity Somerled identified as , or even if such a thing was important to him , although it certainly became an important issue to his descendants and to Gaels many centuries after his death. His paternal line was Norse originally .Regardless , I see him simply as an extremely ambitious and opportunistic warlord operating in a region that was culturally and genetically mixed .
@@bernicia-sc2iw His father was Gillebride Mac Gille Adomnan ? his family descended from Gaelic nobility , I think it's clear what ethnicity he would identify as , lol .
