Melanie, what a gem you post! Totally agree with those " hiding from your husband" videos 🤢 I always try to mantain a reasonable stash.. just 1 box of things.. I normally reject lots of free yarn from indie dyers or brands bc I want to have a project in mind.. during pandemia I accumulate an extra box.. that took me a year of project to get rid of..My reason to have a reasonable stash are: 1. Fashion trends: tend to change and sometimes, some color take a lot to come back again 2. Big stash ovewhelmed me.. kill my creativity 3. I take care a lot of my money, so i dont like to spend without intention 4. As you, i dont have to many space, even when I have a craft / vistors room As always.. great content.. love to see you again around here!
Ah Marcela! So nice to see you around here ☺️. I love your how sensible you are around stash, and I think the pandemic has been quite easy to accumulate more yarn for a lot of us 😝
Hi! I'm new here, but your video was really interesting! Last year, I built a big stash. Most of my yarn is from a shop that is far from my home, so I can only visit it 1 or 2 times a year. I don't like to buy online. This year, I'm knitting from my stash, not necessarily trying to reduce the amount, but mostly to make a lot of projects I have in mind. I'm excited to knit what I have. Also, at the end of the year, I would like to see how much of my ideas I was able to make, instead of how much yarn I got rid of. Greetings from South Korea 👋🏻
100% agree with everything you say - thanks for bringing up shared finances etc as well! I personally am choosing to stash down for 2023 but not because of any outside pressure but simply because I have a TON of yarn that I really want to knit and I enjoy "shopping" my stash. Once I have used up a bit more, I can then enjoy more impulse purchases as well? Also as we have a move coming up it will provide a good opportunity to do some destashing as well ;) Having said that, I hate all the "stash-shame" going on, like what happened to just enjoying whatever makes you happy? To speak in stereotypes, I have not met any men who hide their cars or golf clubs or whatever hobbies they have, yet us (mostly) female identifying people feel the need to hide?
Totally agree with you on the stash shame. I think it’s definitely tied into expectations and stereotypical gender roles. If a rich woman would post on Insta how many cars she had and how much she flies with her private jet, people would think it’s crazy! She would get so much hate. But if a man does it, we almost don’t bat an eye. It’s insane. Women are supposed to be modest and frugal and set everything aside for their family. Like… no. Some of us would like to remain an actual human being instead of a cooking & cleaning robot, thank you.
I really like how you are not only talking about things you knit on. :) About my stash, I am trying to build a better stash with yarns that I like and I use a lot. I would be happy if my stash was i little bit smaller than it is right now so I have more place in my "craft wardrobe" where I have it. :) I am also trying to make better decisions when I buy new yarn.
I absolutely love your content. I enjoy having a medium sized stash with some one of a kind skeins of rustic yarns from local yarn stores I visited on holidays. I love to look through and smell the sheepy goodness and dream of what the wool will become 🥰🧶
I love your thoughts and so agree with our stash. I am lucky to have the small bedroom as a craft room so my stash is stored away but I am trying to get it down. I have yarn I bought so long ago so its either use it or gift it.
Interesting to hear your thoughts on stash. I recently watched a series of videos about someone going from craft room to no stash over a few years. It's absolutely not how I want to do things, but I kind of understand her reasoning. It prompted me to look at my old Etsy purchases (where I started buying indie yarns from) and make a list of my oldest skeins from 2016/7. I used to buy individual skeins because they were pretty, for socks. I don't knit fast enough to use all of the single skeins I bought then. 🤦♀️ Now I am more likely to buy things in a colour or quantity with a vague idea of a project in mind, even if its not something I will knit immediately. I consider myself and my stash as a continuous wip 🤣
It’s so nice to see how we can evolve with our stash and consider the things that work for us and what doesn’t. Do you have any plans for your single skeins left over from those days?
@@BraidAndTinker Still a lot of socks, but also hats and mitts and things. It's nice to know I have choices when I find a pattern I want to make. I'm also liking the idea of holding yarns together lately. Mostly scraps of sock yarn to make socks, but the same idea works for thicker hats or whatever. Ooh I forgot to ask... What is the project you showed with the purple yarn and v neck?
I am glad that my husband always brought me wool instead of flowers, which has enabled me to build up quite a large stock. Now that my husband has passed away, I have to do it from 1 income and I can't always buy more wool. And in this expensive energy crisis there are few people left who can buy wool just like that, especially in Europe. I can now without feeling guilty just walk to my hobby room and pick the wool suits I want to use and finish my stock and hope that by the time my stock I am still able to buy wool with the prices and crises. So what annoys me is precisely the people who just throw away wool because they have looked out for it and run to the store to buy the same type / color of wool, which I think is a waste ;) And what I can't stand either is always the judgment on people who have a large stock, do you know much what they had to do or leave for it? Be happy for them that they have been able to build up a stock for bad times so that they can continue with their hobby
Hi, Melanie! I love this episode! Comparatively speaking, my stash is small… but I feel the need to get rid of some of it… but how? Some of it is acrylic and I have no desire to knit with. I’m open to ideas for the disposal🙏
Hi Carol! 👋🏼 For acrylics, you could either make quick hats & mitts for charity. But if you don’t want to knit with it, you could always consider donating it. I always see people picking up acrylic yarns at my local thrift store. It could make someone’s day!
Groetjes
Don't take the "don't tell my husband"- thing so seriously. It does't mean a relationship is necessarily toxic if people don't share EVERYTHING. Just like you said buying and knitting are different hobbies. Some people just don't understand the buying. It is usually just that, a case of understanding, not toxicity. And instead of trying to make them understand it is better to hide the yarn and try to knit it away.
Melanie! I enjoyed your video so much! Yes I do have stash and yes, Stashdown is improving my creativity! Lol. We had to evacuate regularly in my last town, hurricanes, and I would think about all of my stash floating in dirty water down the street and think I should probably add this to my insurance contents aaaand I should probably stop buying yarn. I have a feeling a lot of the “Don’t tell my husband…” jokes are just an easy joke to make and not very serious. But I do know lots of women (guys may do this too, but I’ve never talked about it with them.) who aren’t as much worried about their husband’s anger, but are worried about looking disingenuous since they’d said they weren’t going to spend so much. It’s less like “Don’t tell or he will get mad.” and more like “I don’t want to do what I said I would, and I don’t want to own that.” Melanie it seems like you’ve reached a balanced approach to stash- you enjoy it but it’s not interfering with everyday life. Mediumstash needs to be a hashtag on Instagram. I do feel excitement when I start digging into the yarn. I don’t feel ashamed anymore because I’m not constantly adding to it. I do feel embarrassed about the unorganized disarray of it, but that’s going to be resolved when I get the free time. This was a fun episode!
Do you have any plans to stash down? Or do you like the options your stash is giving you? Let me know in the comments below! ⬇
I was so lucky my husband of 56 years always made sure I had a place for all my crafts. From a spot by my chair or a whole room.
I have no intention of downsizing my stash. It brings me much pleasure.

Thank you for watching Lina! A craft wardrobe sounds exciting! I should look into that! 😉

Thank you Julia! I love going through my stash as well! A lot of memories can be tied up in a skein of yarn!

The purple v-neck will be a cardigan! Hope to show it soon in a more “stuff I’m knitting on right now”-video

So true! Thank you for your comment 🫶🏼
Love your podcasts so much! Keep it up :)
Thank you so much Nadia! That is super kind of you 🥰
My stash is literally uncontrollable. I am making a scrap blanket to get rid of it all.
