i think covenants was already in the game but they only function as roleplay only as miyazaki said, for example : volcano manor, mohgwyn dynasty, carian royal family

I just think invasions should be random again. Like if you're using a rune arc it also could leave you open to invasion, like with Embers in DS3. Invasions we're always meant to feel uninvited and like another challenge while you're trying to progress. It's not the same when you're playing with a friend because it's just expected at this point and typically stacked against the invader most of the time.

People starting out PVP with ER will never experience the feeling of invading a 4 man gank squad with overleveled phantoms, that feeling of hopelessness until a red shows up, he runs past you spamming L1 "I got this bro". He goes straight to the R1 spammer, parry and finishes him with his trusty fire dagger. The host starts panicking, meanwhile that extra estus was everything you needed to get back into battle. Now its a 3v2, they're cornered, completely lost. Just as the the host is dying the blue shows up. Everybody greets each other and are sent back to their own world.

One was the only spell that could *'always'* shave off some HP even against the most notorious roll-spammer.
And the only reason to use the BHStep was its practical invulnerability frame's, which in contrast I have almost never see anyone *spamming!*

they don't need to add 2 slots, just ONE for a 2nd invader to get in, so 90% of the invasions at 125/138/150 isn't a 3v1 open field with almost non-existent-cost Ash of War projectiles spam L2 fest that you need 500 hours minimum experience to have more than a 10% chance to win.
Oh and a specific area where you can hang in with 5 more players so FCs are a real thing again (which are nice for new PvPers as there's no pressure of permanent 3v1 or grace rune arc'd duelists, they can practice pvp in a fair 1v1 scenario that's not giga sweats in the arena)

IMO the Invader win ratio should be between 30 to 40%, if you need an optimized build with twink gear to even stand a 10% chance of winning against a gank squad that kinda defeats the purpose of invasions. I would gank and invade at the woods/pontiff and you always get the feeling its a "fair" fight, specially at 3v3. I tried ganking once in ER with friends and its completely unfair, the reds would drop one by one.

I will NEVER FRIGGIN EVER forget all the wondrous battles that took place in Oolacile. A derelict town crumbled from age, the halls echoed with the sounds of BATTLE! Blurs of red, blue and gold, all swirling to create a cacophony of metal clashing with metal, silenced by the squelch of torn flesh. The victor bows, but he is not done. The next contender marches down the steps with an unearthy THUD THUD THUD! The ground shakes as the crowd turns to witness the most feard gladiator in all of Lordran, the GIANT DAD.
Edit: the best part of DS1 pvp is that is is still healthy n going strong up to today. Sure it is nothing like it used to be, but you can still easily find a group of like 5 people all dueling and spectating. One thing I do miss so fuckin much, is the dueling etiquette from DS1. Everyone bowed, before and after fights. It was always 1 on 1, and usually anyone who jumped in got ganged up on. There was tons of "thank you"s and "You're welcome"s. It was such a great experience, people were so respectful as they tried to kill eachother. Elden Ring is an absolute shit-mess when it comes to pvp. There is no etiquette, no repect. Thats mostly cuz of all the new players who've never played the previous titles, or those who have but just never engaged in pvp. The rest is all just dipshits. It isn't even dueling anymore, its just a race to kill eachother n that shit is just not fun to me.
DS3 improved on pvp a ton, but my favorite memories come from Oolacile.
My Bloated dark sorceress was such a fun character, people hated that bitch lmao.
Edit again: what they need for ER is what I thought they were gunna do, bring an ACTUAL coliseum. One where we can get a crowd of spectators, with a waiting list to sign up on. You sit and watch battles until it is your time, then your transported to the battlegrounds and duel. When the duel is over the next participant enters. Thats what I and many others thought these coliseums were gunna be like, not just 3 circles to fight in. They dropped the ball so fuckin hard.

On the one hand, constantly fighting 2 and 3 players has made me a better player, and not just me, when on the off chance there is another red, there is a huge sense of urgency and co operation that I used to find myself wishing for in ds3 when other reds joined. • @michaeljohnston8891

I think adding a specific game mode for invasions might be an interesting way to spice up pvp. It would consist of a rotating playlist of maps (mostly legacy dungeons) where three players are thrown in at the beginning with the goal of reaching the boss. To make this easier for the host, they could give them extra heals whenever they beat groups of enemies, as well as giving them the opportunity to summon one friend (if they died) back with each checkpoint they unlock. Invasions in these games are always at their best when it’s that classic game of cat and mouse, with the host and his buddies trying to get to the boss as quickly as possible, while the invader utilizes his knowledge of the level to outmaneuver them and force them into compromising situations. To make it fair for the invaders, the level would be scaled to the host’s level, with a few mini bosses sprinkled in that need to be defeated, preventing the host from just sprinting through the level towards the boss. Each level should have its own unique tiered rewards for the host, invader, and summons, that are themed with the level. Stormveil might have an Ash of War that is like a slower, more powerful Storm Blade that uses fire, similar to what Godrick can do with his dragon, Leyndell might have an incantation that summons a rain of golden swords as seen from Morgott. These would require a certain number of wins, while each match grants the player a weapon upgrade material or maybe even a silver tear
Lastly, for regular old invasions, they should modify the Taunter’s Tongue to more strictly control exactly who gets summoned. Considering it’s this game’s version of the Dried Finger, it should reflect a certain level of added difficulty and masochism in how it functions. It would still open up the host to solo invasions, but limit the host to only one summonable phantom and one blue. Furthermore, in order to be able to resummon, the host should be required to kill at least one of the invaders. That, or it should block summons altogether, and limit the world to just one host and one invader

what I would've liked to see is factions fighting over forts/territories on the map. you can fight for the carians(rennala), Leyndell(morgott), Mohgs dynasty, Radahns army, Miquella/malenias haligtree. then use the various forts across the map and make it so you have to open gates, and take a fortified position. you'd have a set amount of lives/reinforcements defenders win so long as the invaders don't take a flag or relic and the invaders lives are spent. invaders need to take out defenders but defenders have more lives but if invaders hold the relic - defenders don't spawn.
you cordon off these matches just how the npc invasions are cordoned off - by a white wall around the play area. 3v3 in small forts - 6v6 in bigger locations like leyndell, carian academy etc.
I have no idea about the backend but from a gameplay standpoint I think that would be awesome.
for balance they have the means to equate all weapons to a certain level as for pvp. they could even have loadouts/starting classes based on the different factions. Carian knights vs dragon knights of Leyndell. flame wielding Radahn soldiers with gravity sorceries. golden order incantations and holy weapons for Miquellas army. rot builds for malenia, bleed for mohg.
although I'm not as hyped about not taking YOUR tarnished into the battles.

Not only do they need to add incentive by adding covenants but they also need to make said covenants unique like in past games.
Think DS1's Darkroot Forest, where if you succeed in an invasion you get a completely random reward, be it a Titanite Shard or Rubbish.
DS3's Mound-Makers, aka the Mad Covenant, where you not only could invade with the requirement to kill however many players are in the world, but you could also be summoned by the Host and support them through the area, killing enemies with them, only to then betray them via stabbing them in the back.
It's small things like these that give true incentive to not only the covenants but also invasions as a whole.

The last few months I have been trying to get into invasions. Did not play PvP in any previous fromsoftware game, but really enjoyed the excitement of playing against other players after trying it a few times. But 95% of my invasions result in someone incessantly pressuring me with moonveils/rivers of blood/great swords while someone endlessly casts a barrage of spells. I am really trying to stick with it, but I am just not able to deal with this, and I really don't want to just invade and then use a bunch of cheesy BS, so it hasn't been going very well.
Even so, it has kept me in the game, has caused me to use other consumables I normally don't bother with in PVE, and encouraged me to engage with the world to farm materials for consumables. I really don't want to ruin anyone's day and I really don't care if I die, but it is a huge bummer that invasions are so untenable unless you are god-tier. Elden Ring introduced multiple mechanics that favor the invader. I play a lot of co-op at around meta levels with randoms and from my experience the invaders win 80% of the time.
-Campass for the host: gives the invader the ability to ambush the host without the risk of getting ambushed by the host. Most of the time we are getting invaded, the invader wins in a single ambush, most notoriously with the Rain of Arrows skill (ft. duped Golem Arrows) while being completely offscreen
-Flask of Wanderous physic: the host and the co-operators are usually keeping it for the boss, for gankers who get invaded repeatedly it will just expire after the first encounter. Most of the time it's an invader with flask going against people who don't have any flask effect.
-Spawn invincibility: I got in a situation multiple times where I got summoned for Rykard, the host entered the bossroom but didn't initiate the fight, then an invader showed up, and blasted everyone with a dragon spell or unendurable frenzy during the invincibility frames
    -Bieng able to relocate: .....

Ranni and jerren could have been covenant leaders. Ranni requiring you to kill hosts in caria manor or even raya lucaria and jerren could have had you get summoned to help hosts similar to blue sentinels or summoned to defend redmane castle. Both giving covenant rewards. Ranni giving exclusive spells and maybe a staff and jerren giving cool melee weapons and armor.
Yura as a hunter of bloody fingers could have also been his own actual covenant of bloody finger hunters that could give dex weapons and talismans as rewards.
Tanith could also have given pvp exclusive rewards for online invasions aside from the offline quest which has pretty lame rewards.

Man, plenty of people still play PVP. The only people I really see complaining are sweats, and they're going to complain no matter what (but they'll keep playing).
I like your content Zio, but all this "final nail in the coffin, this is the end, it's going to kill PVP for good, PVP is soulless" nonsense is just hyperbole. And people that still can't get over not having solo invasions are just sad. People like ChaseTheBro have proved that it's EXTREMELY easy, fun and satisfying taking on multiple foes, it simply requires more skill and tactic from the invader. You say "well, the host and his co-op friends aren't engaging with world enemies so it's not fair". That's your job as an invader, to make them engage with the world. Trick them. Outlast them. Force them. Also, your comment at 3:48 isn't a new sentiment in the Souls community. People have felt this way since Dark Souls 1. There always have been people that hate invaders, and often times they're right. Invaders are often just there to troll, and adding a reward isn't going to change that. You also contribute to this by running around and T bagging people. Not that I care personally, I do it too lol, but I also don't complain about trolls in PVP, or act like I'm worried about offending newcomers. Also let's not pretend that Dark Souls 3's version of the colosseums weren't just as dead as Elden Rings (unless you 1v1 in the same place every time). It's just a fact that most people don't play Souls games for PVP. Lastly, you say "there is no need or incentive to play PVP"... I guess that sentiment comes with modern gamers that constantly need something to be rewarded with. Loot boxes, cosmetics, new items etc. What happened to just playing the game because it's fun? The PVP is fun! And it's challenging for both the host and invaders this time around.
That's not to say I wouldn't love some improvements like covenants (although I hate the idea of weapons and armor specifically being locked behind mandatory PVP - a better option would be upgrade mats, larval tears or even the opportunity to buy otherwise very rare drops etc.), and I'd also like to see one or two specific areas that are lore based for invaders such as Dark Souls 3 and Bloodborne had, but I'd also prefer From be dedicated to placing all their resources into future IP's and/or sequels instead of working on PVP for Elden Ring for years too.

The amount of skill an effort the singular invader has to put in in order to overcome even 3 co-opers with barely any pvp skill is ridiculous, especially since all the ashes of war, spells and weapons lean a lot more toward favouring gank scenarios. I would much rather take a 1v5 gravelord situation head on than take a 1v3 in Elden ring.
In order to win against even a slightly competent co-op party you have to put in an immense amount of effort which just completely turns me off from the game, and do not get me started on the gank squads that just sit in clear open fields where they have killed all the enemies in the area and have scientifically engineered their builds to be as annoying and miserable to go against in a gank scenario.
It’s also a much more chaotic and enjoyable experience the more players there are in the world, makes the world and pvp as a whole feel more alive and fun.
Also, most level enemies can easily be trampled by 3 co-op players, and for the small minority of enemies which don’t immediately crumble then they can just retreat or run to the boss room or a more advantageous position.

I'm gonna be real; not having a dedicated arena on launch like in DkS2, and making it an update thing was pretty rough, no covenants was a choice, and making the blue sentinel equivalent the least enjoyable version for the invader/defender was also another choice. . .
I still feel like my favorite experiences with invasions (both red and blue) was DkS2 and DkS3; thanks in large part to ER just not having any real incentive to engage with the mechanics at all. DkS2 allowed invasions after bosses being defeated, had arenas that functioned as ways to up your PvP rank outside of invasions for both the reds and the blues (which comes in handy for the blues since it stopped working as well), and it also had more dedicated dueling covenants in the dragons. DkS3 didn't launch with a proper arena; but it still had an active PvP area in the base game, where a ton of players could join in (even to this day), and while it sucked to have to pay for it; the arena was a damn fine addition.
ER got a lot right when it came to certain PvP things though; finally making PvE balance its own thing would've been something that DkS2 and DkS3 players would've loved, and the arena having dumb fun modes with spirit ashes was a brilliant idea. I just wish there was actual incentives to doing any of the PvP. I don't need trophies tied to it (screw that), but just some cool rewards to show off would've made it a lot cooler.

In Dark Souls 1, 2, or 3 the most a covenant would ever ask of you was about 30 items. Assuming you win about half your invasion attempts, thats about 60 invasions. Let's even call it 100 invasions. People that play pvp in these games play way more than 100 matches. What are you doing with your stack of 99 tongues? What are you doing with your 99 soft humanity in dark souls 1? The 11 billion souls you have on your pvp character that you spend on nothing. These games never really had pvp rewards, pvp was the reward. How do you derive fun from covenants when it's weeks, months, years down the line? Genuine question

    • @pockystyx4087
      @pockystyx4087 3 місяці тому +1

Covenants add what can be seen to most in the PvP scene as goals to set, either for achieving a build or just for the clout; most of which can be achieved with less fun offline methods tbf, but it gave each new run at least the option of hopping on the treadmill and inevitably going against someone to try and keep PvP alive. The rewards; even after achieved, gave you a reason to have gone through your first couple PvP interactions, usually (but not always) getting those interested after messing with it to stick around and play PvP for the sake of it.
Without them; you are playing potentially "1000s of hours" of PvP entirely for the sake of it; there's no reward structure to show what you achieved playing, there's no RP element tied to even working for the Recusants or Bloody Fingers, there's no incentive to engage with it outside of the want to play it, and when you start up a new character, you are essentially only tied to whatever you unlock in the open world/through progress. This would be perfectly fine; and it DOES work for a lot of the newer playerbase that just want to engage in invasions (or ganks, ugh); but for some of us that actually enjoyed doing PvP for the above mentioned reasons, it takes a lot of the joy out of the experience.
TL;DR Not having them makes the time spent in PvP very streamlined, with little to no incentive to engage with PvP outside of wanting to do PvP. it doesn't entice new players in, and it turns returning players off that want that dopamine hit of rewards.
*edit: also should mention having coop/defender covenants as rewards is nice for getting people to help new people; though most players are in for coop for the sake of it nowadays. And Blues got the worst of both worlds really; with no unique sinner invasions, or having to either join a gank/be miles away from any invasion lol

this speaks to some of the problems i think er pvp has. without covenants, you have no extrinsic motivation nor role play reason to invade, so the only incentive to invade is the intrinsic motivation of ruining someone's experience, which added onto invaders being constantly ganked, you end up in a situation in which the majority of invaders are filtered to be high skill, and motivated by being toxic, with this being pretty bad for coop players.
compared to ds3, where i invaded for a playthrough just for the role playing of being a rosaria's finger, i have no reason to engage with pvp. that playthrough had some memorable moments of chasing a host through second half catacombs down to smoldering lake, with all of their cooperators dying on the way, to getting two twinned tongues from an anor londo invasion, and being happy with not killing the host. for as many invasions i succeeded, i also failed invasions, and i worry that invasions in this "bolted on" state that elden ring will lead to everyone just having a negative experience of invasions, especially hosts.

I think a good way to introduce a ideal pvp setting with a player would be with the volcano manor invasions of tarnished. How I imagine it working would be that a random player just looking for fun can choose to be a target in the already existing areas to fight npc tarnished. I am saying this as a elden ring exclusive player so I don’t know if this would actually work in practice and I also would like new invasion specific encounters and possible story lines added rather than rehashing already made ones.

Being able to win an invasion would be huge confidence boost to engage in pvp, but it's a long way for new player to even dream of that. If only new players could be teamed against new players...
When I was playing DS1-3, i considered all invasions inevitable deaths. I would still try to pull a fight, but you can imagine what a newbie could do. IIRC only invasion I won was when some poor soul found me in banned pool (I don't think they were an NPC although I'm not sure).
Ironically, I started enjoying PvP only in ER. After I had ~6 months of experience. Even taunter's tongue invasions were thrilling, as it wasn't an inevitable loss. It was more like a test, will I survive this invasion or not. Although I can agree that this system could see some improvements. For example, opt-in or opt-out system of solo-host invasions with normal timer: more hosts would engage it (as invasions wouldn't get overwhelming) so invaders would have wider selection of hosts. Although solo hosts might still be at disadvantage, as invaders would be prepared to deal with 2-3 foes, and a single opponent would be an easy kill... idk.
Forced invasions solo invasions without opting out (or with debuffs on doing that) might outright ruin a player experience. In previous games, death would lead to loss of all area progress, and that was very annoying. In ER areas are much larger, thus it would be even more frustrating. And a new player has almost no chances of winning against invader who is prepared for worst case.
I have no PvP mindset, I cannot even invade: I either just die or kill host and feel sorry for that. But I think it's worth considering how possible PvP fixes might impact other players' experience.

It's clear to me that Fromsoftware is trying to move away from PVP in the souls formula.
It is always more than a few marks in quality below the bar set by the PvE and Co-op. At this point it feels like it only exists out of tradition, because the vast majority of players do not want to engage in PVP while they are exploring a 99% solo experience.
Every souls game is plagued by criticism of the PvP systems. Endlessly the fans of PvP criticize the systems, while the fans of PvE crap on the games because of the forced PvP scenarios.
Most people fall into the PvE enjoyers, this is main focus of these games. I don't anticipate any PvP changes for the DLC, and the next souls game they make possible may not have PvP at all.

After seeing a few other videos on George RR Martin's books I have come to the conclusion that Messmer has some common plot to "Daenerys Targaryen" from GoT and that emblem on the left hand side is in fact a dragon of some sort (faction) that we will not know until the DLC hits. There are just too many common threads to deny. I also think we will see a lot about Marika's background in the DLC. And naturally you would need a new covenant item system such as unique currency and a banner you would equip that represents that covenant and symbolizes your allegenience ie f you equipped Rennala's covenant banner, you get a unique meteor star item that serves as the currency for acquiring rewards for said covenant. In addition, there would also be rivalries/allies between covenants and the currency is rewarded based on your interaction with rival/ally covenant players. Area based multiplayer interactions. Etc

Which would allow more people to join a larger group of colloseum/pvp enjoyers because it's capped at a specific lvl. I also think if they can separate status buffs into pve and pvp, then they should cap the damage output in pvp so that way people won't get pissed about getting 1 shot by some bs. If Elden Ring combined Bloodborne's and Dark Souls 3's multiplayer features plus its own new features, it would have been perfect.
I've always wanted a menu in which you could choose to personalize your co-op / pvp experience.
For example, a toggle to turn on and off solo invasions and invasions in general, a toggle to switch between 4 player worlds and 6 player worlds, a way to set the level matchmaking system, etc.
If they did it in the way i see it, it would have been perfect.
It would have been cool if they added a way similar to DS3's covenants to interact with the multiplayer.
Like- they could have added rings.
Each ring could have done something different.
Maybe the Ring of Liurnia would have allowed you to become a protector of Liurnia, thus making it similar to DS3's PVP covenants

G9 is a pretty stupid fellow, but believing ER players can’t be expressive with the hundred possible different builds just might be worse.
Like, sure, it’s true when you try to reduce all builds to the most efficient ones, where only wins matter. But, it’s ER, anyone doing that, trying to make PvP competitive, instead of playing the game’s setting and expectations… is playing the wrong way. The way alluded to when you hear “gamers will optimize the fun out of a game.” Pvp isn’t about winning, it’s about fighting other players. Winning just might be less than a tertiary goal.

Way to miss the point so astronomically. Sure, you go try your special snowflake blood magic/flail build against a gank full of dragon breath spells, and you let me know how you got to express yourself.
Watch any fighting game, even the most brain dead easy ones, and most two players will play the same character completely differently. But sure man, if you think R1, R1, R1 and a few random L2’s is you expressing yourself with your bubble blower build, then I’m happy for you dude. In that aspect you actually are very unique.

I don’t think pvp has ever been a large part of the series….i play the 1v1 arena and it takes like 5 min to get a match

I don't think they should lock content behind pvp, as it's just a minigame. But they could make it so you can get or buy rare items like some people have mentioned already. Things like starlight shards, larval tears, rune arcs, ancient stones, etc.

yes. because if there are 4 people instead of 6 trying to have fun its just not possible. ridiculous.

It’s not even just PvP it’s also PvE player cap, imagine being able to summon 6 people(5)to kill your favorite boss or whatever instead of just being locked at 3

@@vongolamistowl pvp is the reason people keep playing these games for years. Elden ring is the first game to put pvp on the side and its worse for it. what am i supposed to do after i beat the game, what objectives does the game have for me to keep me around? PVP is the end game, after you beat these games you come back to perfect your builds. its the thing that lets you hone your knowledge of the game.

6 different builds with 6 different people playing them gives a lot more variety, people keep playing these games for years because of the unique interactions in pvp.

@@loneperspective people always say this however they never are able to prove thats true, how do you know that pvp keeps the playerbase and not the pve.
Every time i play these games i rarely get invaded yet always see the co-op summonig signs and only see the red signs on specific areas and not that many.
