  • View in 1080p. Vision 3 250D shot in an Aaton A-Minima using Arri Ultra 16 lenses, mostly 9.5mm. Night shot was pushed one stop to ASA 500. This wig-wag is the last man standing, as far as Class 1 railroads go -- or so I'm told. Processed by Fotokem. Telecine by Spectra.
Night shot was illuminated with two prius headlights attached to my prius.

I certainly hope that wig wag will stay there for many more years to come

Sadly it didn't, until 3 years later after you made the comment.

I hope he's still there, I'll be going that way from WI, in late August, 2017, I'll stop and shake his hand! Thanks for posting, great job!

Still there as of 8/20/17. But not for long, I was told by a BNSF worker who showed up moments after I made the bell ring by manually rocking the banner back and forth. They are upgrading the tracks in the area right now, and the signal will soon be retired to a museum, he says.
We drove nearly 5 hours out of our way to visit this guy, got some pics of me standing along side, holding onto the banner arm, for memories.

What will replace the wigwag? Will it be a gated flashing crossing, possibly with a cantilever, or will it be an undated crossing, or with no lights at all? Or are they just going to replace the wigwag with a better wigwag? (I really hope the last option but I already know for a fact it isn't the right one)

I visited the crossing again on May 25th, 2018. The Wig Wag is still up and running! See ,my other posts on this video for more detail. If it ever does get removed, the crossbuck sign that is already in place would be the only thing required at this low-traffic crossing.

It's a shame that this Wig Wag signal is gone from it's original location (it was removed in early 2021). However, the signal did get a nice retirement. It's now on display at the Colorado Railroad Museum, and you can still see and hear it wig and wag.

I once again visited this crossing on May 25th, 2018. The Wig Wag is still up and running! I was worried about it, because they have been renovating the tracks in the area, and the latest Google satellite view shows a big Dumpster sitting right next to the signal. But the work seems to be pretty well done now, and the signal has survived. I'm guessing that because this crossing is part of the historic "Santa Fe Trail", they will keep the signal in place as long as they can keep it working. I would also guess that the conductors on the Amtrak that passes through here twice a day, point out the signal to the passengers. I have one more trip scheduled to the area at Christmas and if the weather isn't too bad, I'll make the 5-hour detour and check on it one last time!

If I were to own a railroad, I would make all my crossings like this...one wig wag each side, one over head "stop, look, listen" red painted wig wag, if on a big road a black and white wooden crossing arm, and maybe even one of those rotating stop signs. And if people haven't seemed to understand the signal, I'll add a modern flashing red light somewhere on there with the good old "stop on red signal" sign too. Not one crossing would be separated from those guidelines. And not one accident will occur there... Not on my railroad, not with those signals, as people will be interested in the wigwag signals and wait to see the crossing go, instead of becoming impatient, they'll become patient with interest.

You should try this video with Bob Dylan's "Wigwam" as the soundtrack. It fits nicely, though not as long as the Moody Blues song. I enjoy your films.
