    I just started attempting to learn a cutdown a couple weeks ago and while I haven’t mastered it yet I have figured out some things with it but the biggest thing is the improvement of my air control. I’ve been decent blowing a regular ole single reed but since I started trying to learn the cutdown I go back to the single reed and I’ve noticed a massive improvement in my air control

    I had an expert help.me with cutdowns. He learned to cut calls at lower vallier campground from old timers that cut olts using files on cinder blocks.
    He said to run a cutdown by "Cook Cook cook Cook cook....hard. Cook sounds cuts notes hard on both ends. You can really push the call and hit it hard immediately...way less spit. Try it
    That's your bark.
    To feed call do "tuh tuh tuh tuh...hard and randomly. He acted it out I a parking lot and I made lots of call videos so he could coach remotely. According to my friend I've mastered a d2 olt cutdown.

    I blow a cutdown and a regular duck call the same except for air presentation. A regular duck call is with a large mouth cavity (reference words like "quit"), but a cutdown is a small mouth cavity (reference words like toot). Air presentation to a cut down is more like a flute goose call. Once you give it pressurized air, you don't have to blow that hard. Most people try to blow a cut down like a regular call, but they try to blow the end out of it until they're about to pass out.

    • @SurvivingDuckSeason
      @SurvivingDuckSeason  3 роки тому

      Jeremy, there may be some who call it a come-back... but a comeback is an entirely different call, in my opinion. Honestly I've heard people call all sorts of things "a comeback call" lol. I have talked about the comeback call on some of my other videos. It is a long note pleading call- similar to a greeting call. A call that is used very sparingly. Thanks for watching!

    • @jeremybreeden77
      @jeremybreeden77 3 роки тому

      @@SurvivingDuckSeason That's what I figured. I remember seeing your video on the comeback call, but I've seen other videos where it and the chop-chop seem blurred. Joel thank you so much for making this video, I’ve had the same issue in finding any information on it so I’ve been experimenting myself. I got a comment back from somebody from Rich N Tone once that helped me along the way. Like you he sugg. I trim the length a hair. Otherwise I was just copying you lol that’s why I bought the call in the first place, because of your videos. Have you found the reed sticking when using lower pressure? I get it especially on the feed call. It gets stuck distorts and makes a higher sort of raspy squeak unless I put a ton more air through it. So that makes the feed chuckle very hard unless I have a very full breath. Anyway after about two weeks it started sounding good, I’m going on about four months now.

    • @SurvivingDuckSeason
      @SurvivingDuckSeason  3 роки тому +1

      You’re welcome, Chris. I haven’t had the call stick in the way you described. I do occasionally get a stick after I’ve been blowing for a long time and it gets too much condensation in it.

    So I'm looking at an RNT Mondo and there is a lot of options. I've noticed in a lot of your vids that you're blowing a shorter barrel version over your original DC mondo. I'm curious as to why? Also, would you recommend a certain shorter barrel for someone who is just beginning on a cutdown? My friend gifted me a Singleton Cutdown for Christmas and I am having a hard time getting it to sound even remotely good. This video has been a great starting point (so thank you) but is there anything I can be doing to practice effectively?

    • @SurvivingDuckSeason

      I just like the feel of the shorter call. I don’t find it easier to blow. It’s the same insert as the original. Singleton makes a good call too. It just takes a long time for many guys to get good on cut downs. It took me a year or so to get decent on mine.

    Hey Joel,
    A thought I just had. Could you possibly explain the difference or what makes a cut down call in comparison to a regular or non- cut down call...

  • @graydoncarruth5044
    @graydoncarruth5044 3 роки тому

    Man the cutdown is different and, yes, it's a different technique. But it's not THAT hard. I now have a Mondo alongside my Stinson and don't see how it is much different than blowing different J frames, let's say an Echo vs an RNT. Just a bit of an adjustment.
    Oh. And where is that Stinson review? Still stand by him to the end!

    • @SurvivingDuckSeason
      @SurvivingDuckSeason  3 роки тому +1

      I'm not sure which Mondo you are comparing to a regular J-frame... possibly the LT model? The LT is lightened up significantly and is very easy to blow, but not nearly as loud as the other models. Now that I have been blowing a cutdown for years, I now tend to over-blow regular calls because they are so light. It only take a second for me to remember to blow differently.

    • @graydoncarruth5044
      @graydoncarruth5044 3 роки тому +1

      Yes it is an LT. I was just surprised it seemed to blow so much easier than the other cutdowns that I'm trying (with varied success thus far lol) to learn.

      It depends on the type of sound you like, and how much time you’re willing to put into calling. You can certainly start easy and work your way through different calls. If you can be disciplined, then pick any call that you want to learn and go buy it and learn it! Echo makes some great calls, so does RNT, and many other brands. My next video will touch on this.
