U.N. Squadron. This game got played so much I think I melted the bottom half of the cartridge. The music, sound effects, and gameplay were amazing for The SNES. 10/10 rating from me.
I like how the large helis make a controlled crash landing in this version rather than just blowing up on SNES. That iconic first level theme is much better sounding here as well.
This is one of those EXTREMELY rare cases in which the home console version of the game (SNES, UN Squadron) was far superior to the original arcade version. It's truly a tragedy that there can never be a re-release of UN Squadron, much less a sequel, due to anime rights. C'mon Capcom and Nintendo, work something out with the copyright holders, this series is a LEGEND in the making! 😎
There was a spiritual sequel to this game-Carrier Air Wing, from 1990. It didn’t use any licensed iconography, but it never got a home console release either.
I absolutely will agree that the SNES version is superior, but in the same breath, call it an _evolution_ of this game. I would have liked to see the "Boss Gauntlet" type level in the SNES verison, where we see those former bosses being rebuilt.
@@calanon534 Ha, that wouldn’t be the first time they used the likeness of an actual person. In “Top Secret: Hitler no Fukkatsu” (Bionic Commando), they make it very clear that Adolf Hitler is the final enemy. In the American version of the game, they renamed him “Master-D”, but the in-game graphics remained unchanged, so you can still tell who it’s supposed to represent.
The Level 3 boss in this game reminded me of a stationary version of the Bydo Empire living battleship boss from Level 3 of R-Type 1. Man I hated that SOB as a kid.
14:34 That was a civil airplane though lol. The objective is to shoot the 3 bombs without damaging the plane. Also this mission was deleted in the US version.
In case you didn't know, the scar-faced officer giving the mission briefings is Saki Vashtar, a Colonel from the Indian AF that flew an IAI Kfir in the Area 88 manga and anime. He's a veteran of the later Hindu-Pakistani air wars of the 70s.
I like how the giant aircraft carrier tank is guarded by Merkava Mk.1 battletanks and GRAD launcher trucks. Area 88 was always great at mixing NATO and Soviet weapons together in a fictional war theater.
The ubiquitous Capcom Hyakushiki! It was in a lot of Capcom games as a hidden or rare item. I remember it from 1943, Area 88, Section-Z, Forgotten Worlds, and even Mega Man 1.
I loved the boss from Level 4, a Mobile Oppression Fortress on treads. Now I know how Matt Groeing got the idea for the Decapoidian Mobile Oppression Palace on Futurama that Zoidberg was riding around in...
Area 88 (the anime) wasn't licensed to the US during the game's release. For Capcom to release the game here in the US, they had to change the title of the game as well as names of the characters (as was usual during 80s and 90s era of translating Japanese games to English).
This game might have been the first time I ever saw the MiL Mi-26 Halo chopper. They were the gargantuan mini-boss helicopters in Mission 4. That helicopter scared the crap out of NATO in the 80s because it could haul full-sized ICBMs all over the Soviet Union in its guts.
Now that I think about the Area 88 manga and anime, wasn't Shin Kazama a test pilot for Mitsubishi when they were testing the F-2?! Explains why he took to the Tigershark like a fish in water, the F-20 had a lot of similar avionics and performance to the F-16A.
The level one boss is a Metal Gear-sized TOS-1 thermobaric rocket launcher. Ironic that the enemy is using a giant flamethrower rocket launcher to guard their oil refinery...
Was Mission 3 in the game supposed to be like the Star Wars Trench Run where U.N. Squadron got jumped by Sea Harriers in the manga and anime? The game designers threw in Yak-38 Forgers guarding the Mega Fortress boss and SAM launchers to make the level extra annoying.
If only the F-20 could fire AIM-54 Phoenix missiles, it probably would've won the competition with General Dynamics' F-16 . But alas, you needed the AN-AWG 9 or 71 from the F-14A/B/D Tomcats that Mickey Scymon flew in Area 88.
This is an excellent games, but i've always felt that some of the sound effects are way too loud like the enemy explosions. If just there was a better balance between the music and the sound effects because the soundtrack is pretty good, specialy the track of the first level.
This is the arcade version of the game, which the SNES port would be base off of. They are essentially identical in gameplay and stages, save for minor changes to one boss fight due to SNES limitation. The name difference is due to Capcom needing to change the name to sell the game outside of Japan. Area 88 iirc never got a US release during the time of the game's release. The anime boom was still years away in the US.
Always wondered if an F-20 could go toe-to-toe with MiG-29s in real life, the F-16 ended up being adopted by the USAF and NATO instead. Japan developed it into the uber-expensive Mitsubishi F-2.
The enemy having a B2 bomber in Level 2 is hilarious. I guess it was the anime studio for Area 88 making fun of the treasonous shill at Northrop Grumman in the 80s that got busted on camera for all the grift and intellectual theft he committed around the aircraft by the Feds. I thought the evil SR-71 or A-12 in the SNES game that launched KH-101 cruise missiles and tried to kill you with its jet wash was a more appropriate boss in the Area-88 universe.
14:36: The hell are you doing? You didn't have to destroy the plane you just had to destroy the bombs and save the passengers and the pilot from a bad end!
@@rogercruz1547 Not really, it's considered the "foundation" of Ace Combat. Plus, Air Combat on PS1 is called Ace Combat in Japan, while Air Combat is the same name in all regions. It's weird.
The sound effects are horrible and way too loud(specially the explosions) and it ruins the experience, but I find the music better on the arcade(mission 3 forest sounds more epic here than snes)
You'll have to forgive me, but that cheesy, fly JUST below every weapon , on every ground based boss is SO unsatisfying to watch. We want to you see you have to FIGHT the bosses! You know, like the developers intended. I mean, I can't blame you for seeing an exploit, with path of least resistence, and cheesing it. Especially when it's just, there. But it just isn't sportsmanly or keeping in the spirit of actual competition.

Area 88 (U.N.Squadrion) is ABSOLUTELY AWESOME with STUNNINGLY AMAZING graphics and gameplay
One of my favorite Capcom games that will NEVER get released again (due to the anime license).
This game slaps SO FUCKING HARD!!
At least we got the sequel in Capcom Arcade Stadium. :)

That arcade game looks great tbh, but do you know this one is based on the actual name of the anime in 1985 OVA
the SNES version was awesome, i must've played it more times than Air Zonk for TurboExpress...
So many good memories of Van Dyke Sports Center and CJ Barrymores arcades as a kid from this game. The 80s and 90s had the best rom cabinets.

I wish I knew about this game when I was kid. I just discovered the anime after being a life Long Ace Combat fan.
The Metal Gear Aircraft Carrier! Wonder how much it would've weighed and how many nuclear reactors would be required to power it?
So I'm curious to know why they changed the name for the SNES release? I mean U.N. squadron sounds cool but something about Area 88 sounds better.
