Your dad and your brothers are a hoot! Love it when they get control of the camera! 😂
Did we meet a new uncle we haven't seen before or am I just forgetting? I'm going to have to find Joel's genealogy video now because the genealogy hobbyist in me wants to figure out where he goes on the family tree.
Farming families are so interesting to me to see where the branches spread out and whether they decide to stay with the agriculture field or go into something else. My father's family were all farmers at the start of the 1900s, but not one of my father's siblings continued in agriculture. Going through the depression left them with pretty bad memories, but the head of their family viewed farming as a way to survive. He wasn't very business-oriented, nor did he show any love for the practice which seems a bit sad to me. Watching how successful your family is at farming kind of heals the wounds left behind that my father's generation lived through (they've all passed on). I have a better understanding of why they made the choices they did as opposed to taking the family land and creating a successful agriculture venture of their own. Each of them made good lives for themselves after leaving the farm they grew up on, but they always had a special place in their heart for the old homestead.
One of the girls bought a parcel of the farm that was directly on the water when it was sold and she and her husband moved there after they retired. It's where all the family reunions were held and the final resting place of my father's ashes (he was the youngest) so I know the farm held a special place in their hearts for the rest of their lives.

Bucketing grain into the grain crusher reminded me of how we used to do it at my grandparents farm. The whole batch was scooped up by hand with buckets or large shovels. It was great when they got a grain tank with an unloading auger, saved a lot of work. They milked 50 cows and had at least that many fat cattle as well as 40 or so sows farrow to finish that took a lot of grain.

    • @kayerin5749

You might think that...because the Ochs make it look easy. It's not. There are years and years of learning, both in education and in passing down knowledge. Along with a lot of hard work, through both the good and lean years and family supporting each other, as I said they make it look easy. There is a lot you don't see. But you are right, they also do a great job of showing the average non farmer what farming entails, something that folks who think that milk comes from a carton haven't experienced.
