  • In this video we get our hands dirty with some testing of various rib flange configurations for the upper and lower corner portions of a cantilever style nose rib. We need to figure out if a cantilever style will work or if we need to try a truss styel.

Interesting design study! Is there a reason you are avoiding a diagonal truss element in tension? As you say I expect the truss will require less Aluminum. I assume you are not designing for inverted flight loads. Do you have access to finite element analysis? Maybe you should look into Fusion 360 FE modeling?

I'm thinking that the ultimate loads your ribs could handle would be greater since the adjacent ribs would give a resistance to twisting loads.

But what you did was just a point of load test. You need to load the entire nose rib section.

Yep. That is the next rib testing video.

Is it possible to fold the material on the perimeter back on it’s self doubling the material thickness at the outside fiber

why not just test a full nose rib segment, rather than partial segments? the samples are behaving differently than they actually would due to unconstrained end behavior.

I was thinking the same thing and commented above before I noticed your post.

The purpose of the smaller tests was to better understand how various parts of the rib might fail in order to have the knowledge to design a better but light weight rib.
