I started buying & collecting CDs back then in the 90s. Hat full of stars was the ever first CD album I bought. I love this album so much that it was played in my CD player for the entire 8 months whenever I was heading out. Cause it was so different & wonderful. Back then in the 90s, you don't hear songs like that. I could still remembered very clearly I went to her "Hat full of stars" concert in Singapore back in December 1993. She gave a soulful performance & was the best concert that I ever went.
This is a great album, from here on, it what Cyndi wants to do. The money for her is on touring to her fanbase. It will be a lot Cyndi trying her own thing from here on out. It’s not a bad thing. I do hope you are able to get a full version of Shine, that can be difficult to come by.
I got this CD when it came out and played it so much. Someone Like Me felt like an anthem for those who were not in the expected environments for success. I didn’t get to confirm the true meaning of Sally’s Pigeons until the concert. For so long I connected the song to an extraordinary childhood friend, with a pirate’s smile, who I often missed. Replaying about six songs continuously is a lot and I'm planning to get the vinyl.
Fantastic album even though it wasn’t a commercial success. I saw Cyndi in concert at the Park West in Chicago when she was touring for this album. I’ll be at the United Center in December. I’ve been a fan for 40 years…..
I think this album is her most consistent statement as an artist. I really appreciate that it’s all her instead of several covers as it was with her 80s stuff. She’s actually an artist who at her core often likes to deal with unpleasant and difficult topics which you wouldn’t necessarily get from her 80s hits, so I feel like this album is a good blend of moods and styles. I have come back to it regularly over the years. Oh and as for “Product of Misery” in specific, I don’t think it’s about one particular person but rather women from her mother’s or grandmother’s generation who were repressed by society and expected to put aside their dreams and ambitions to be housewives because that was the expectation. The line about the wedding dress seems to be saying that the woman buried her passions and dreams when she got married and had to conform to what was expected of a married woman at the time. Also the line “she never came and never left” is a clever little double entendre…in the situation she’s describing, a woman’s pleasure wasn’t important, her role was to please a man.
Awesome video! I have a request if you could do it next year when it’s the 30th anniversary of Selena’s death ... maybe you could do all 12 of her albums !
I didn't know this album existed until after I bought her Greatest Hits, 12 Deadly Cyns... And Then Some. I did see the video for Who Let In The Rain once on TV in 1993.
I do believe there is a full live concert of this album on UA-cam from 1993 (Live at Irving Plaza) but keep in mind it's 1993 and it's Not an official label production - so the sound quality might be off. Ok, a few of my 2 cents. Lies. It's supposed to sound frantic and out of place. Nobody has a clear mind when they are being abused. I don't think the song Hat Full of Stars was an official release for the States. It was only available as an import - so I think only UK audiences got the official single. Who Let In The Rain and That's What I Think --- oddly did better on local radio stations but mainstream top 40 did not pick it up. The two songs did make it to the top 40 in the UK. She received almost zero label support on this album. From here on out ... Cyndi takes the pop / top 40 standard formula, puts it in a box, and tosses it out the window.
Cyndi had a very abusive stepfather. It's in her book. Cyndi left home at 17 and lived with her sister to escape any more abuse. Broken Glass was a true story based on Cyndi's life...however she didn't shoot him. Her mother eventually divorced him
This album was great live in concert, she did two 90s albums which both didn't sell, then she did a more 80s type album Shine the full album was eventually released in Japan but only an EP was released in the US are you going to get the full Shine album or just the EP?
I never liked that Album, i think the 3 ones before we're so much better. Only a few Songs i like, like "Who let in the Rain", "Sally's Pigeons" and the Title Track, but so many terrible Songs like Thats what i think/Broken Glass/Dear John/A part Hate...!
I'm so pumped of "Sisters of Avalon" ❤️
Me too!

I work at a library and I'm in charge of our A/V purchases. No one in the system had this album or Shine on CD so I bought them for our collection!
I’m surprised you didn’t react to her 1992 single “The World Is Stone”. It’s a fantastic song, you would love it.
@@MusicHorrorFanatic check out the video for Twelve Deadly Cyns 🙈😉
@ Omg that was the next video I was going to watch after this one! Forgive me for speaking too soon haha!
Thank you for including "Cold"--I've always loved it, what a hidden gem!
It's so good!
@@SalRocha I used to replace "Lies" in my mind with "Cold"--but now I can't imagine Hat Full of Stars without "Lies".

Where there's a will there's a way!
Tommy Mottola has a lot to answer for trying to shelve her
That man ruins everything!

Good luck! The vinyl is very expensive!

I saw Jesse McCartney at Park West a few years ago. Cute little venue!
Magnificent !

Thank you for that analysis of "Product Of Misery"!

Quite possible!
yes please do :)
This album got no love from the label. It’s so sad how little love this album got
It's so weird how they cleary spent money into releasing it but then no money in promoting it.
THAT CD IS FANTASTIC!!!! 1993❤
I didn't know this album existed until after I bought her Greatest Hits, 12 Deadly Cyns... And Then Some.
I did see the video for Who Let In The Rain once on TV in 1993.
I'll have to check out the video
Vanessa Williams & Belinda Carlisle would be great Sal reviews
I'd be very interested to do Vanessa Williams I became obsessed with "Save The Best For Last" this year.
@SalRocha so much good stuff.
Who let in the Rain & Dear John
The best 2 songs.
Cyndi's "Sisters of Avalon" album is her Bedtime Story/Ray of Light type album :)
Hat Full Of Stars = Bedtime Stories
Sisters Of Avalon = Ray Of Light

her Dear John vocal reminded me of Alanis Morrisette
It is a very Alanis Morrisette vocal isn’t it!
@@SalRocha Yes ! like on Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie ! , Have you ever Done An Alanis Discography Journey ?

Lies is about her stepfather trying to take her innocence. Very sad stuff

The full album. We don't skip out on tracks here!
Read Cyndi's autobiography, and you will understand why her work underperformed.
I got it from the Library!
