    I remember Jeannie not taking her sore throat seriously and it almost cost her life. BMI (body mass index) is NOT a percentage value. It's a value based on weight over height squared. It's an inexpensive and quick way of assessing whether someone is underweight, normal weight, overweight, obese or morbidly obese. It's not always accurate because a very muscular person could have a high BMI. I also want to point out that a huge issue with fat is WHERE it is located on the body: it's much worse having fat in the abdomen surrounding organs than, say, your rear end.
    That said, I'm really glad that Adrienne and Loni are making it clear that obesity doesn't look one way and are emphasizing the importance of getting checked!

      Thank you!!! I was about to comment but you literally said everything o wanted to. Part of me is kinda critical of Adrienne’s doctor if that’s how it was explained to her. While I’m sure that someone who has seen her overall health is giving solid recommendations regarding how much weight to lose, not clarifying about BMI is reckless and dangerous. For context, 40% body fat is not just obese it’s MORBIDLY OBESE, it’s indicative for people to consider bariatric surgery which is not her situation at all. Also, we fail to mention she’s petite so a BMI scale is gonna expect her to be VERY TINY to fit into that range. That said, if her BMI was up to 40, it is still probably indicative they want her to lose at least some weight, and yes adipose tissue/fat around her abdomen is generally the most concerning for all of us.

      I think she mis-spoke and meant she got a body fat percentage analysis. That’s where you stand on a machine and it can estimate body fat percentage. I’m that case the percentage she indicated is associated with medical obesity

      Agreed! We also have to factor race into BMI. Basically, I feel the standards used to calculate BMI are not geared towards women of color who usually have more muscle mass naturally. I had severe endometriosis, fibroids, etc. and it didn't happen for us. I got so angry with my body I started emotionally eating because food was the only thing in my control. I finally had a partial hysterectomy after trying for 7-8 years. And it has taken me almost 2 years to mourn the loss of what could have been. I'm finally getting to a place where I'm ready to release the weight, sadness and anger and am focusing on the blessings in my life including my amazing husband who held my hand and dried my tears. PLEASE READ🚨 There is a lot to unpack on this episode, and while I appreciate the ladies sharing what they did, a lot of what they were told by their doctor and nutritionist was not true, and can be extremely harmful 😞. I'm a Registered Dietitian and Nutritionist 👋🏽 and I help people with their metabolic health and weight 24/7. All dietitians know that the BMI (body mass index) is an antiquated way to assess your health. You MUST take a holistic approach to your health - looking at your waist circumference, muscle mass, distribution of your body fat, lab work, etc.. The BMI ONLY looks at your height and your total body weight. The BMI does not s NOT look at your muscle mass, body fat distribution (for example, is most of the body fat around your waist vs around your butt? The difference matters).
    This is important because people who have lots of muscle mass tend to always be qualified as "Obese" by the BMI criteria. For example, athletes who have lots of muscle mass will usually always be classified as "obese", which is why dietitians look at other markers to assess health and risks for disease. Your weight is❌ NOT ❌ the only determinant of your health. This is why people who are "skinny" can have high cholesterol, and people who are deemed "obese" or even just "overweight" can have healthy labs values and not be at risk for diabetes (which is what Loni was alluding too! Good for her👏!)
    Doctors are supposed to refer patients to see a dietitian when it comes to helping them with their weight and nutrition. Additionally, there is a HUGE difference between a nutritionist and a dietitian. ALL dietitians are nutritionists, but not all nutritionists are dietitians. Some nutritionists received absolutely no training in nutrition and diet. Some just receive a certification. Dietitians must have a masters degree, sit for a board exam, and are mandated by the academy to keep up with research and continuing education credits every five years to ensure we are teaching the public correct nutrition information.
    Please, take everything that was mentioned here with a grain of salt (pun intended 😊) and see a dietitian when looking for nutrition and weight loss advice and guidance. There are many you can work with online or in person in your local neighborhood.
    *Please excuse any typos! Was typing from my phone!*

    Over 15 years ago, I was working overnights full-time and going to school full-time. At one point I started to gain weight very quickly. I would have heart palpitations and just figured it was because I was so stressed and overworked (I would sleep 3-4 hours a day). I went to my doctor and he told me to "stop eating so much." I told him that I didn't eat a lot. I barely had time to eat and at the time I was a vegetarian so I regulated what I did eat but he blew off my response. Then one day I went to the store with my mom and bought pants for work, because nothing I had fit me anymore. The pants fit at the store, but when I tried to put them on the next day they wouldn't go over my legs. That's when I KNEW something was really wrong. I went back to the doctor and insisted he figure out what was going on. I told him I literally felt like I was going to have a heart attack, while sitting at my computer at work. He did bloodwork and realized I had hypothyroidism and was on the verge of heart failure because of it. This doctor would not stop apologizing for his mistake. I was happy to finally know I wasn't going crazy, but having hypothyroidism sucks. This isn't the only time a doctor didn't address my concerns and because of it I dealt with larger issues in the end. The other time was when I had fibroids and the doctor I was seeing told me not to worry about it and just put me on birth control pills. Then a few years later I ended up having to have major surgery to remove them because they had increased in number and I had one the size of a grapefruit. I was in excruciating pain. I was in my mid 20's and just "listened" to my doctors thinking they knew best. I make this comment to say.....ALWAYS listen to your body. If a doctor is telling you everything is fine and you feel otherwise, push for more tests. If your body feels slightly off listen to it, because it's giving you warning signs. Before your body gives, it lets you know. I truly believe health. If I don't feel comfortable with a response, results...etc.. I ask for more tests. Take care of your health, you only have one body!❤

    they are throwing two things together...BMI is body mass index. the 40 percent and 35 percent that adrienne and loni are talking about is body fat percentage. you can have a low BMI and a high body fat percentage or a high BMI and a low body fat percentage, e.g bodybuilders. both are quite flawed when assessing health since they dont consider body proportions, the most accurate way is to measure your health is measuring your belly fat, since fat in the thighs and butts of women for example have no medical disadvantages and actually contribute to fertility.

    • @marykay7878
      @marykay7878 2 роки тому +2

      @@elleivers9387 its actually very hard to calculate. there are machines that send electronic waves through your body, and one assumes that fat has a higher resistance to electricity than muscles and water. but thats an assumption thats difficult to prove. and again, those machines dont differentiate between female boobs and female thighs and female buttocks and the dangerous belly fat that leads to the fattening of our organs. often alcoholics have a "healthy bmi" but lots of belly fat due to alcohol consumption because the liver is so busy with digesting the alcohol that the glucose of our food is not properly burned off but put into belly fat. so if your bmi is ok, and under 25 is ideal, but 25 to 30 is still considered healthy here in germany, and your belly is not disproportionally fat when compared to the rest of your body, you should be fine. and even IF you have lots of belly fat, do an EKG to see if your heart is strong, and maybe an insulin resistancy test. if both tests come back good, you should be fine :)

I took my health seriously at a young age because I was black in a white school, but when I joined cheerleading I knew I had to really get it together. and I did pretty well on and off as an adult. From 25-27 I was in amazing shape then I fell a little off, not by much until I got to 29 then 29-33 I was in the best shape of my life and then 34 up until 40 I really fell off and now I'm super over weight, but I'm fixing it. Right now my body mass is 36.6. So I am making improvements.

So if anyone shames me with, “oh that meal service is expensive”, I can tell them it’s for my health. And it saves money and all these doctors visits I would need to get my blood drawn - liver issues, thyroid issues, pre diabetic issues, etc…I went so many times during covid years and now since it’s made me healthier, I haven’t had to go back frequently. I have been underweight all my life according to the BMI chart. It took me 35 years to finally be in the normal range. Not sure how long that'll last before I fall back into underweight category. I could lose weight much more easily than to gain. It's the opposite problem for most people but it still matters to me because skinny people get teased too for looking skeletal or be called "skin and bones."

    Here, because I was diagnosed with PCOS late 2019....I've been struggling. Having irregular periods or no periods at all. I can miss my period for 90 days and more, only to have it for one day. I have gained so much weight since my diagnosis, yet I am the healthiest eater in my family... Nothing seems to help keep the weight off and its been taking a toll on my self confidence, especially when people voice it out... PCOS, is literally the worst thing to happen to a woman. Because not only are you insulin resistant, which means you gain wait like crazy and its hard to keep it off... But you also have to deal with hormonal outbursts, to depressive episodes and just not wanting to talk to anyone... I have discovered a ridiculous amount of hair, on my arms, legs and down my spine line on my back... Not getting started on the ance. Gosh, my acne is so bad. If its not ance, than its the terrible acne scars... You also get hungry all the time, thanks to insulin resistance!... There's also abdominal pain from day to day activities... And bowel pain from doing stuff around the house. Insomnia?? That one has became my friend, and it comes with daily headaches... Not forgetting that sometimes I feel my period is coming, and it actually doesn't come. Sometimes I feel myself ovulating, but no period! I'm only 26, I'm so tired😭😭😭😭

      So sorry to hear about this. Have you had your thyroid checked? Because I had thyroid issues for many years and some of the symptoms you described are exactly what I went through back then. I don't know if pcos symptoms are similar to thyroid problems, so I could be wrong. But I think it's worth for you to have a check ASAP. I spent 4.5 years undiagnosed because of medical errors and as a result of that I was starting to lose my hair. I don't want anybody to go through that, it's very scary. And as for the insomnia, you may want to solve that one quickly as it can affect your memory in the long term

    • @ameliaChii
      @ameliaChii 2 роки тому

      @@mardjo595 I've had several thyroid tests and fibroids screenings as well. This was before doctors could make sense of my situation. Half the time doctors would tell me "Get contraceptive pills, they will balance your hormones and your period will come."... It took a lot of money and several doctors to finally get an accurate diagnoses. Its sad how PCOS is something most doctors ignore or are just not that clued up about... They had to find small cysts on my ovaries, did blood work, to find out I had high estrogen levels... I had more male hormones hence I not getting my period... After that I tried two more doctors just to confirm, and it was confirm that I actually had stage 1 PCOS and premature Amenorrhea disorder... This means my chances of having a child are zero to nothing, because I don't ovulate at all. Its just too much, and it sucks because there is no cure. I just have to be on expensive supplements that don't even change much about my condition.

    • @mardjo595
      @mardjo595 2 роки тому +1

      @@ameliaChii I see. I was asking because it also took me a long time to get a thyroid diagnosis. It was only after changing doctors and getting an ultrasound that's when they found out a nodule on my thyroid. I understand the money issue, here in UK we don't pay, but I can imagine how incredibly expensive it must be in your country. As for the insulin resistance, the only thing I know it works is not medication and all that, is actually cutting sugar off your diet. Meaning carbs and fruits that are way too high in sugar. I can tell you this first hand, because there was a time in which my period didn't come for 3 months, but I was eating poorly and gaining weight. I temporarily did keto and my body has gotten back to normal. I eat anything I want now and try to avoid stress however I can. I'm not a doctor so there's room for error, but I think it's worth the try to just for a few months cut off carbs and sugar and see how your body reacts. It is also cheaper than paying for meds that don't work.

    For anyone confused, Adrienne mentioned BMI but she is actually talking about her body fat percentage instead. Her body fat percentage is 46.9%. Anything above 32% can be considered obese for women. Her BMI (body mass index) is 25.6 which is actually considered overweight, not obese. This is why BMI is outdated - because it’s inaccurate. She would’ve never known she was obese if she didn’t go and get her body composition measured. BMI is misleading because it doesn’t break down how much muscle mass or fat your body is holding. I’m glad she found these numbers out and is bringing awareness to the myths around obesity. 💛
