- Episode 65: Charles Boyle’s novel THE OTHER JACK is mostly an excuse for him to reflect on literary life, but from the margins, not from the mainstream. To give a sense of the book’s canny insight, I pull quotes from it and then comment, choosing the lines that most spoke to me as a hopeless lifelong literary junkie.
Books mentioned:
The Other Jack, by Charles Boyle (CB Editions, 2021)
The Road, by Cormac McCarthy, 2006
War and Peace, by Leo Tolstoy, 1867
My Half Orange: A Story of Love and Language in Seville (Tortoise Books, 2023)
Writers mentioned:
Stendhal, Gustave Flaubert, Henry James, Ford Maddox Ford, Joseph Conrad, Walker Percy, Delmore Schwartz, James Salter, Vladimir Nabokov

Great presentation. The Other Jack sounds like the kind of book I will enjoy. Look forward to reading it.
Thanks for the comment. The book really struck a chord with me.
You convinced me, just ordered the book. I’m sure I’ll love it as much as you do and if I don’t I won’t let you know.
You are very considerate. :) Thanks for the comment.
Well, I liked your review so much that I've just ordered The Other Jack! CB Editions is a great publisher, which I discovered through its edition of Agota Kristof's extraordinary 'The Notebook' (the first in a trilogy, though I've yet to read the second and third novels).
I've been thinking about reading and reviewing that trilogy. CB Editions has also published her very short memoir THE ILLITERATE. Thanks for the nudge and I´m glad you liked the review.
I love this book rant series! This one here, in particular, spoke directly to me, as someone always looking for brilliant work that does not try to be cutesy, or morally didactic, or politically correct, or virtuous... but just damn good literature. I'll need to get a hold of The Other Jack. Carry on, John!
Thanks for the comment, Bernard. THE OTHER JACK has none of that BS. I loved it.
You were extremely lucky while shooting this Video.. No "Levante" Wind was blowing during the shooting.. Definitely, the beach is gorgeous but with Levante wind blowing around.. Better stay at Home 🎉🎉🎉
You are very right. The levante wasn't bad that day. It was windy, but bearable. And the beach was basically deserted. Even better.
@@book_rants Bear in mind :"Levante el viento que coloca" 🏖️
@@josebenito15 Lo tendré en cuenta. 😉
