San Ysidro Ranch is one of the most beautiful resorts we have ever spent time on. We have watched it go from a country collection of modest Western cottages where JFK and his new wife Jackie spend their honeymoon where it was all "bat 'n board" construction and simple 1940's bathrooms to today, after various modifications, to a super deluxe resort filled with that special commodity - privacy and beauty.
Today, it still holds onto its original ambiance even as it has been totally enhanced from glamorous interiors to a verdant hillside campus from rose arbors to a really special kitchen garden made like a traditional French kitchen garden.
While we went for lunch at the lovely 2nd restaurant of this 5 plus star resort, we also went to enjoy the cascading gardens on this hillside property. From waterfalls of cascading bougainvillea to Mier Lemon groves, from Lilly pad pond to rose arbor. So many places to sit have afternoon tea, just wander through or sit and breathe in the fresh sea air perfumed with the aromas of the many different Mediterranean plants, flowers and trees.
We wandered around before lunch at "Veranda" to enhance our appetite, then after a lovely meal, to work off some of that same lunch. We popped our heads into their first restaurant that has been there since the dawn of time, "The Stone House" with its enclosed terrace and its exterior tree filled "Patio" level dining area surrounded by a tall hedge for privacy and a wind break when the sea breezes or stronger winds whip up.
We enjoyed sitting in the courtyard dining at "Veranda" since it was a perfect California day. On a less pleasant day, the indoor dining room with huge stone fireplace is cozy and calming. The original "Old Adobe" building, dating from 1825, started as a place to live, became an office for the ranch for a long time but today is a charming, rustic dining room for one large round table and a crackling stone log fireplace transporting you back to California's early years. It is tacked onto the Veranda Restaurant.
The food was good with the Strawberry Gazpacho fantastic and not too sweet or made exclusively of raspberries, so not a sauce served as a cold soup. The Chicken Milanese was, however, just plain and crunchy. I could have used some chopped tomatoes with a bit of garlic and onion on top while it came with a very nice salad on the side. The salad dressing was too "lemony" tart for me but perfect for my wife. But a little drizzle of olive oil from the small dish for bread dipping too care of that. But that main dish was a bit lack luster for such a high end establishment even as the gazpacho was perfect. We finished with the tart Meir lemon tart with a couple "eggs" of whipped cream all finished off with excellent espresso and a chocolate mini biscotti. A love meal consumed in a fabulous environment, just with a main dish that could use some upgrading.
Expect mandatory vallet parking. But this is experience is so much more than just a meal; its a total immersion in one of the loveliest spots on the planet.
San Ysidro Ranch is just up the hillside from Upper Montecito.
