I actually own 37 Rifftrax discs. I have since found two more that I’d thrown in with a (how uniquely Archivian is this?) Betamax stash-namely “Night of the Living Dead” and “Samurai Cop”. I also have a handful of titles that are download/streaming-only.
Oh yeah, and the collection starts at the 4:50 mark.
EDIT: I watched "Rad" on New Year's Eve. I liked it more than I thought I would.

You're living near Minnesota, which is the home of movie riffing! It totally makes sense. I can identify with your high school story. I got suspended for "riffing" a scene in Mel Gibson/Glenn Close Hamlet that our class went to in an real theatre. The class was silent while watching a "disturbing" scene and in a mock female voice from the back of the theatre I shriek, "Ride me, Hammy, ride me!" It was the only time I was suspended from school with the teacher trying so hard not to laugh, she was literally coughing and turning red from holding it back. It was so worth it!

Magic Christmas Tree is easily my favorite of the RiffTrax Christmas movies. It’s bizarre without being too wacky, and for me, it’s also the snapshot of Southern California in the early to mid 60s. But yeah everything about this movie just screams.” Second bill on a kiddie matinee double feature”.

19:28 Fun IRL fact: The RV in "Octaman" is the same make and model that 'Cousin Eddie' owns in "Christmas Vacation". It's a somewhat obscure make and model (Condor II).

I was just thinking about the Movie Rad yesterday evening, when the song Send Me An Angel by Real Life came on the radio. I didn't know it was riffed. I think this was Lori Loughlin's from Full/Fuller House first movie? Anyways I haven't seen that movie in 30 years.

RAD is actually quite enjoyable riffed and unriffed if you go in with the right mindset. It was one of those "make a movie for kids and their new craze" type of films where, like so many other types of films, you have everyone in the world obsessed with this niche little hobby that the film is centered around. Still, it's a fun nostalgia piece and for a long time was a very sought after VHS tape.
Personally I keep up on all the shorts for download but long gave up on the movies. Luckily so many are on places like Tubi for free that I can explore them that way.

I love Rifftrax, I actually got started with them after they ran a - believe it or not - Humble Bundle with nine different shorts. I started buying riffs for the movies, but after a while, they stopped selling riff-only audio, and started bundling the movies with baked in commentary, and a much higher price. A bunch of their older movies (and related projects) are on UA-cam and Tubi for free, so I just watch them there.
I still support their kickstarters and get some shorts out of them, and they keep sending me $10 gift certificates every Xmas.
I still got like $70 in credit. Heh.
Edit: Also, I grew up watching Mexican Santa Claus and I'm still amazed at how many people riff on it. It's not that weird, I swear. And it's actually not that different from the Mexican version!

My friend and I used to do this with all kinds of movies. We didn't have editing equipment though, so we'd just point the hi-8 camera at the tv and do all the voices. Good times...but bad movies.

I love both Rifftrax, and MST3K (the older years at least). Plus from the Riffs I've seen from Rifftrax, I do have my favorites, like Fun in Balloonland, More Dangerous than Dynamite, Jack Frost, The Richard Terry Nat Geo specials, and the Bridget and Mary Jo shorts for Rifftrax as well. As for MST3K I have my favorites too from the OG Era like Danger Death Ray, and the shorts like Cheating, Young Man's Fancy, and Hired! Parts 1 and 2.

We must be kindred spirits. I also think Man From Harlem is one of their best pieces of work.
I'm glad that you can get RiffTrax movies with and without the riffing, you effectively get double entertainment value. Mind you, I'd be hard pushed to go through Reefer Madness without the Nelson/Corbett/Murphy commentary. By the way, whoever colorized that movie must have been taking some waccy baccy themselves.

    • @newstarcadefan
      @newstarcadefan 6 місяців тому

Oh there's as couple that you would have needed the riffs for. Like the Star Wars Holiday Special, Manos Hands of Fate, and from MST3K the German version of Hamlet.

I've seen The Crater Lake Monster exactly once, on an old Interglobal VHS tape. I don't remember it being unwatchably bad, but it definitely had some groan-worthy cheesiness to it, especially on the production value front (night scenes that were clearly shot during the day, anyone?). I might have to track down that particular Rifftrax DVD, because now I'm curious what they did to it... I also have a cheapy VHS of Reefer Madness around here somewhere, but I haven't subjected myself to that one yet...

I bought a few early episodes of RT when they started after the end of the Mike episodes of MST3K but I just lost interest after awhile. I can still happily watch all the Comedy Central episodes and the whole of the Mike run of MST3K at anytime. Sometimes I’ll pull up a random episode on UA-cam or wherever I can find it. When I was in high school and college in the 1990s I had loads of episodes on VHS taped off of TV but those are in storage and I haven’t played a VHS tape of anything in years. I tried some of the new incarnations of MST3K after Mike, but, ehhhhh. No thanks. I’m done with new riffing, RT or otherwise.

I never really liked Rifftrax as much as MST3k, at least for long-form stuff. Something about their riffing feels more mean-spirited (and it seems weird to re-do movies that MST3k already covered). I do love it whenever Mary Jo and Bridget show up, though.

Riffing is a great comedic artform. The reason I don't listen to RiffTrax is because I absolutely despise Kevin Murphy. Because of his constant cringe worthy scatology. Go and watch that first half of season 5 again, knowing what we know about the situation and personalities involved. Kevin is best buds with Jim Mallon, you know, the guys who forced Josh out. Well Josh is constantly being belittled by "Servo" in the host segments. Kevin is obviously being alpha dog, and doing whatever he can to put himself over Joel, to take more control, with Jim, to dumb down the show for better ratings. Joel hated the "fart jokes." He hated reusing old jokes. Listen to Crow at the same time. Trace goes from being contemplatively funny to jack ass laughing at anything Kevin's infantile humor. Hey, it's what Jim wanted, right. Except for a few exceptions, the show was on a total decline, season to season, from Josh being forced out, to Joel getting tired of the politics and leaving, ...... Mike? He's OK. His humor is often lazy, but I don't cringe like I do everything Kevin says "I'm making gravy in my pants." Yeah, some joke, eh? Well he uses it. A LOT. Now Bill I like. Bill was recommended by Josh (who actually understands funny) to the show when Trace left to do the "world's funniest" stuff. RiffTrax. Maybe if someone redid all the Kevin parts. Let's stomp him out like a Stalinist purge.
