It's been almost 8 years since city pop was discovered by the world? Personally, I think "Shibuya-kei" has the second highest potential after city pop.😀 Shibuya-kei is a genre of Japanese popular music (J-POP) that was popular in the 1990s, originating from Shibuya in Tokyo (particularly the Udagawa-cho area of Shibuya Ward). It is a form of pop music that emerged from Shibuya's many used record stores and foreign-affiliated CD shops. Shibuya-kei inherited musical characteristics from Japanese city pop in the early 1980s, as well as producers who built orchestral pop such as Burt Bacharach, Brian Wilson, and Phil Spector, as well as French pop (Ye-ye). The group drew strong influences from 1960s culture and pop music, including Serge Gainsbourg, the leading composer of the 1960s. In the United States, it was released by major indie labels such as Matador Records and Grand Royal Records, and was supported by indie pop fans. The duo Flipper's Guitar, led by Keigo Oyamada (now Cornelius) and Kenji Ozawa, formed the foundation of the genre and influenced all groups, but the most famous Shibuya-kei bands were the mainstream Pizzicato Five was a fusion of pop and mix, with influences from jazz, soul, and lounge. Shibuya-kei music is characterized by a departure from the trend of ``music performed by bands'' that had been popular up until then, and it is characterized by 1980s new wave, guitar pop, neo-acoustic, house, hip-hop, 1960s and 1970s. It is said to be an urban-oriented music that emerged around the end of the 1980s and is based on a wide range of music genres, mainly soul music and lounge music from the 1980s. Essayist Seiko Ito says, ``Music was created by artists who went to record stores in Shibuya and listened to music from all over the world,'' and said that the common characteristics of Shibuya Kei are ``stylish'', ``effortless singing voices'', He cited the "exquisite sense of distance from the mainstream." Representative artists include Pizzicato Five (Yasuyo Konishi and Maki Nomiya), ORIGINAL LOVE (Takao Tajima), Flipper's Guitar (Keigo Oyamada and Kenji Ozawa), and Bridge (Hideki Kaji). Although the musicians themselves were often not pleased with the classification as ``Shibuya-kei,'' the word was often used to describe their music, which incorporated many musical elements. In addition, their CD jacket designs and fashion were innovative, quoting and reinterpreting designs from the 1960s and 1970s, and had a strong influence on the fan base of of their music.
