Perhaps a prominently displayed sign indicatnig "Pet Reactive Dog on Premises" or "Guard Dog Inside" would give pet owners pause. At the very least, it should prompt them to ask if the coast was clear. Another option would be to provide a labeled "Pet Hitching Post" at the bottom of the stairs so that folks will not bring them past that point. Not sure if Callie would still be upset by a dog just outside, but at least there would not be a face-off in aisle 3!!
I totally agree with your pet peeve. I believe dogs should be socialized but that does not mean they need to go into businesses with their owner. It should not happen! A sign well displayed outside and a pet friendly post to hook the leash to outside the store is a great idea. Plus the guard dog or sensitive dog inside sign is a great idea too. Maybe add a small bench so the owner can sit down with their dog if travelling with someone.
Suggest sign "Service Animals Only" Re: Trail Days... would not be surprised if they are protecting the existing Damascus Outfitter(s) which means you need to open a Nahamsha South store there and run them out of business!
I agree about not wanting customer's pets in your store. But i also feel this way about the owner's animals. As a customer and working for a family business for years, i feel super uncomfortable around dogs because you never know how they will act. I have seen it go badly one too many times. I would appreciate a sign on the door because I dont feel safe, some people are allergic. like you said they often feel territorial about the space or their person, and i cant handle that gamble. I would appreciate the head's up of a pet so i can make the right choice for me!!
Great video! Ah bummer about Trail Days but - don't take it personally... The wait list is really rough because there are so many vendors wanting to get in. I applied last year for the first time and ended up getting a spot at the last minute (like less than 2 weeks beforehand) but had already committed to another area of vending outside of the main place. So I stuck with my original commitment and really regretted it as the area where I was wasn't as well traveled and now I'm back on the wait list :) (I sell Appalachian Trail themed candles). But - if you don't end up getting in - I would highly recommend attending for fun, especially your first time! There are so many fun things going on, it's hard to be stuck behind a booth. There's a parade where you can walk with your class and a big bonfire and dancing at night, and RiffRaff roasts a pig and they make tacos. It's super fun just to walk around and see the other vendors too. So if you do end up being a vendor, hopefully you have someone help you with your booth so you can walk around and enjoy the rest of the festivities. Good luck with it all!
I think your peeve is legit. I've never brought my animals into a business, but if I were to, I would call ahead at the very least and ask what the policy was. I mean no disrespect to Trail Days, but their response was pretty vague considering this would need to be planned for. 🤔 Keep us posted Nahamsha. ✌️
You say "Appalachian" perfectly. I'm glad when we stopped by with our three Golden Retrievers, 4 years ago, they stayed outside, even though Callie wasn't there that day.
If you talk to the Trail Days folks again, make sure they know that you are 2 time thru-hiker. The whole festival is to celebrate the thru-hikers and it seems like they always have events featuring former thru-hikers and even like class reunion meet ups. I would make sure they knew you were a UA-camr as well. Those things have to help. Hope to see you there.
@@TayloratNahamshaGiftsYou can't do much better than that! Hopefully, they will get back with you soon after Easter so you will have time to make plans. As big as Trail Days has gotten, I would imagine they would have to be pretty organized and will get things finalized soon. No fun being in limbo.
Taylor, are you still 29? You know don't you that every calendar year you have to add one number to that!!! You can't keep it where you want it ...😂❤🎉🎉🎉
Its your store you have every right to have your dog there. Put a sign on door saying service animals only. Dog on premises notify worker b4 entering w animals
Awwwww to be 29 again.. If I recall, that was a very nice age to be lol.... Taylor I was 29 way back in 1986 so my memory is a little fuzzy.... But you enjoy staying 29 for as long as you want lol
You are absolutely NOT a bad person for feeling bothered by someone bringing their pet into your store. I would never dream of doing that. Like you said, a service animal is one thing but that would be the exception. I would hang a sign saying, "Only Service Animals Allowed Inside." Maybe that would help?
Hey Taylor! Thank you for the update on Trail Days. I'm from Ohio and have my hotel booked for the weekend, but if you don't go I will probably cancel. Your UA-cam videos on the AT are what got me interested in hiking, and I would love to meet you to tell you "Thank you!" for bringing out my passion and helping me explore the wilderness not only in Ohio, but also some recent trips to Vermont and New Hampshire. It's beautiful out there up north! If you would need any help setting up or anything if you get accepted, please let me know as I would be glad to help. Anyway, fingers crossed! And if Cody needs a ride down from Ohio and wants to go, tell him I got him, haha! Take care!
It's a tough one with the dog situation. Working in retail, I do admit that most dogs brought into my store are NOT identified as service dogs but I've come to understand that animals are SO important to those that bring them in. I have yet to encounter a situation with an an agressive or unruly dog. It is possible the customers may not have the opportunity to shop otherwise. I do agree that some sort of sign at the door asking the customer to forwarn you that they are bringing an animal could avoid putting Callie under unnecessary stress if you are able to bring her to your mom's store for a short period as needed.
Here in western Europe it is very common and usually allowed to bring your dogs into stores like outdoor stores but still I ask every time if I can bring them in.. that's just the least I could do. On the other hand though...if there is no sign at the door that dogs are not allowed and I bring my dog in (because there is nobody there to ask) but the store-dog is unfriendly...I also wonder if that is a good dog to bring to the store. Than you should be clear as a store owner right away at the door that pets are not allowed inside and not have the situation escalated once your customer is in. Pets not allowed I think would also mean no store-dog either. At least not in sight of the customers. This might be unclear to customers who are afraid of dogs for example. Because of the sign "no pets allowed" they might feel safe to go inside and than they are still being confronted with a dog.
More and more businesses are dog friendly so people may just be bringing them in without giving it a second thought. Agree with som e type of sign that let's them know you have a reactive dog on the premize
I live in a pet friendly city in Canada and a lot of the stores here (Even big box stores) will have a sign that say pets welcomed. If that sign isn't up, then it's definately up to the owner to ask before bringing the dog in. I would definately choose a pet friendly store over one that isn't as I take my dog to trails everyday so shes normally in the car with me. Having your dog there though might cause some confusion... I would assume the store is pet friendly if the owner brings their dog in everyday. I would obviously still ask before bringing mine but idk. With you mom having her dog and you having yours its giving Pet Friendly lol.
I do a lot of long distance backpacking with my dog and I would never just bring my dog into anywhere without checking first. So no you’re not alone with your concern.
The dog situation is tough one. It’s your dog and your store so you should do what you feel is right. Maybe you can have a somewhere outside a dog can be leashed and put out bowls of water to encourage people to leave them outside . I don’t really know. Trails days would be fun for you I’m sure. Happy trails.🤘🏻🥾⛰️
I think a business owner should decide if pets are welcome. I'd suggest a no pets sign and explain it upsets your dog. Some people bring pets into stores, restaurants etc claiming its a emotional support animal.
Maybe put up a sign or have a lil shelter like area for pets while they shop...idk? "Shop pet here, please ask before bringing in pets so we can all stay safe"...??? idk I don't have pets, so I never really think of these things but I think it's common curtesy to not go into any space with a pet unless it's needed. But some people seem to get weird about their pets and get offended easily but like you have to know that your pet isn't welcomed or appropriate in every situation...right? But then again, your shop seems so inviting and the demographic you serve is probably very heavy in the pet owner category. It's interesting all of the things that come up as a business owner.
you would need to post a sign about NO PETS ...BUT, you having a your dog on premise may not LOOK GOOD to your CUSTOMERS that have a dog. Tough decision !!!
I would never bring my dog into a store unless it specifically stated that it's pet-friendly! Just because the owner has a dog doesn't mean it's a free-for-all. It's so weird that people don't understand that. It's a tough situation and could easily become a liability if the dogs become anxious or aggressive. Maybe you need to specify on a "no pets" sign that the owner's dog is on the premises.
How could Trail Days not accept the one and only Nahamsha Gifts?

IMO ONLY Service animals - all others (including emotional support ones) should stay outside unless permission is granted by the store staff.
Maybe put up a sign stating that one of the staff members is a dog, please do not bring animals into the store (service animals are welcomed)
Not a pet peeve at all! You aren't Pet Smart, Tractor Supply/ and others that advertise that pets are welcome. Nice that some ask tho...
There should be no pets in a business whether customer or business owner unless a service dog. I don't even understand why people would want a pet.
No problem with dogs but those owners…ugh….wag more bark less🕶
