I live right off exit 12. it most have been a hell of a site, seeing the turnpike being built. The turnpike actually cuts right through my town. also seeing how empty some section they filmed for this, what a difference 50years later. cool video they even filmed the service area right near my exit. they just recently built a new building at that service area, surprised that building was that old.
We started using the Jersey turnpike to avoid the a-holes on I-95 though Philly. We would get on at the connector bridge (Pa turnpike to Jersey turnpike) at exit 6 and take it south to the twin bridges. With only 5 interchanges and 2 service plazas, we figured we wouldn’t have a problem with the a-holes. I would get behind the first tractor trailer and enjoy my ride. Only an idiot would cut me off to get behind the truck. Do you know who the idiots are? They’re New Yawkers, tailgating an SUV and suddenly cut me off and HEY, there’s a BIG TRUCK here. Was always funny watching them try to get back to the left lane. Njtp only had one pothole and that was in left lane just before twin bridges. We don’t use that road anymore because the tolls went up and we found out if you break down, AAA can’t be used. Turnpike ties you to their yard so now you have too pay them before you can use your own towing insurance.
Glad to see that the United Kingdom isn’t the only country that has/had a problem with people driving to fast for the road conditions, especially the snow and fog, whether that’s because they don’t understand the danger because of a lack in knowledge or plain “it won’t happen to me” or “it’s not that bad” or “if it was that bad they would change the speed limit” or maybe they get a sense of invincibility because car manufacturers claim their vehicles are designed for bad weather as much as good, whatever the reason too many people find out the hard way, and in some cases they pay the ultimate price for not realising how dangerous bad weather is, and with vehicles able to go faster and faster the dangers today are much higher than they were when this film was made.
Level of service and expectation of level of service is unbelievable, would never, ever get that again, and while self financed and making a profit. Those days are over. Between then and now, it’s been nothing but productivity, fraud scandals, inside deals and kick backs.
It was widened to 6 lanes each way from Edison to the end at Ridgefield NJ in 1970. They still want to make it wider and wider. Was on it today. Lots of trucks.
AT 19:44 - motorist casually litters - tosses his ciggy butt on the ground. Was that a director's call? "OK, see - when you're talking to the service guy just toss the butt on the ground."
Gas mileage and car life was horrible at that time. Now I drive around NJ off peak and to other states on a tank and avoid the turnpike which no longer has service trucks lol
Remember, this film was produced 66 years ago, its a rare print we obtained, and the intent of the film was to showcase the "new" turnpike along with the services produced by Cities Service, who sold gasoline on the turnpike. And of course, the "Pikets" who would provide travel information.
I loved the holiday traffic at around 8:39. Try taking it nowadays

I am between exits 8 and 8A, this is actually my film copy you are seeing.

Counting the cars on the New Jersey Turnpike
They've all gone to look for America
Same thought here! :) One remark however - It should read "They've all COME to look for America"
Got to love that old 29 cent a gallon gasoline and a lot of other things back then!
I don’t know about the rest of our fine UA-cam commentators but I’m about to let loose with a powerful shart.
2 l anes wide... Now it's 6 to8 lanes .Still jammed up
More lanes ≠ less congestion. This is a law known as induced demand. It is impractical to build beyond the end of such pent up demand.
We didn't know how good we had it back then! The highway tolls maintain the police ,etc. Not anymore.
Substitute video of modern cars at 3:00 and the commentary still works 70 years later.

I noticed that too. No headlights, bad visibility and they're still flying.. I've seen a lot of wrecks during the winter because of that
10 minutes to get assistance with car issues, that's quick
I bet the guy that pushed the fan belt heard about it for the rest of the drive down the turnpike.
Unfortunately not as likely then as now, though…
Thank you for these.
Not many copies survive, it was a miracle that this was offered about 10 years ago from the late Wayne Sarnowski, a film dealer from the Chicago area.

Very well thought out it seems
You woke up this morning..
Try simply waiting by the side of the Turnpike now!
I say the turnpike has been widened since this film was produced to handle todays modern machines. 😂
Do you have any old films about the Central Railroad of New Jersey? I’d love to see that.
The CRNJ produced several films, but their availablity is limited -- there are several produced using 8mm film from amateur photographers.

by the 1960's the road was overcrowded

They knew it was going to need expansion in 1953 when they reached toll revenues for 1968 that first year.
AT 19:44 - motorist casually litters - tosses his ciggy butt on the ground. Was that a director's call? "OK, see - when you're talking to the service guy just toss the butt on the ground."
Worse, the broken fan belt was just tossed onto the ground.
To be completely honest, I know too many people who avoid that road like the plague.
Meanwhile in L.A., 8 lane highway's in gridlock.
Radio dispatcher ...gas call 86 South - Repair Truck response ...flat tire, 91 North.
The truck was replying with what call he was currently working on.
The time !
Gas mileage and car life was horrible at that time. Now I drive around NJ off peak and to other states on a tank and avoid the turnpike which no longer has service trucks lol
Does NOT look like that at Christmas nowadays.
exit 13
And today we can ask WHY ??????
The north section is sinking into the swamplands and horrible to drive on and tolls are way too much
Never any slowing down... Until some idiot wrecks and backs traffic up for 10 miles
what a joke! good vid though.
