One thing that I really enjoy seeing, in a surprising number of matches, is really great sportsmanship and general camaraderie between players (playing with revealed cards on the table, handing out big ole dice, pointing out triggers that may have negative effects for you, light hearted banter, etc.). I think it really goes miles in showing that at the end of the day, Magic is a game, and is really about having fun.
Real quick note about the coverage itself: I've noticed more often than not, when we are watching a player think about what he is going to do during his turn, we are seeing his opponent's hand on the right column. I personally, would rather see the active player's hand so I can think with him!
I like how in the commentary they say a judge rules Xenogas's first ability is a mana ability. The definition of a mana ability is that it 1) doesn't target and 2) is not a planeswalker loyalty ability.
The legendary land is tap 2 and it to cast mana based on your devotion. He than uses the the Voyaging Satyr to untap the legendary land. With the mana left floating he uses it on the legendary land for its second activation.
Xenagos is not a mana ability since it is a loyalty ability. Comprehensive Rule 605.1a An activated ability is a mana ability if it doesn't have a target, and it could put mana into a players mana pool and it's not a loyality ability.
@@MRINDYSTORM I know this is almost 6 years old but nah these aren't Ultra Pro, they don't have the holofoil Ultra Pro stamp on the sleeve Also Ultra Pro sleeves aren't very durable, they tend to break pretty easily within a couple months of use
Hey can someone explain how Mihara was able to cast Garruk, I got lost when he was using the Voyaging Satyr to untap lands and I confused, can someone please kindly explain how he was able to cast the Garruk please
plz tell me if this doesn't work, but check this out. Say you have nykthios or whatever the hell it's called, 1 or 2 voyaging satyrs, zhurr-taa ancient, and decent devotion. this is the scenario. you tap 1 and nykthisrdgh (you get the point) and get say 5 mana, but because of zhur-taa ancient, it adds up to 10 mana, then the untapping with voyaging satyr. This can mount into a huge mistcutter or savageborn hydra
Sadly, this does not work because of the wording of zhur-taa ancient stating that the player "adds one mana to his or her mana pool of any type that land produced" meaning that you could add only one more bringing it up to 6 mana from the first nykthos as opposed to 5.
Yeah that unfortunately would not work, but running Nykthos and Karametra's Acolyte in a Green splash Red deck can drop a 10/10 Savageborn easily on turn 6. Pair this with Solidarity of Heroes to double its counters next turn with Nylea on the field and you have yourself a win.
might be a noob question, but doesnt the legendary rule say that there cant be 2 legendary permanents with the same name on the board? but why can both players have nykthos shrine to nyx which is a legendary land?
at 10 minutes, he use the satyr and add 4 manas. He use satyr and untap nykthos. He remove 2 from pull and use nykthos a second time. So he has 2+4=6 manas in pool ). Then he put garruk.
because the tokens are 1/0 and get +1/+1 from master of waves, if you kill the master of waves do you kill all the tokens as well because they have zero toughness?
Game 3 Black vs Mihara. Instead of playing the Tidebinder mage, why didn't he just animate the Mutavault, and kill the planeswalker with unblockable? And save the removal for after Mihara throws out more threats..
The correct play at 12 minutes would have been to drop a creature using garruk and then using domri to make that creature fight nightveil specter i cant believe how bad he miss played that
At 51 min , couldn't Mihara just mizzium mortars the master of waves......all the tokens die.....he attacks with everything, feeds the scavenging ooze and win the game? or i'm missing something?
Such a common misconception. Listen, there is no such thing as 'The Best Magic Deck Ever' and there never ever will be (or else this game would suck). But if there was, just for pretend, it would STILL get mana screwed from time to time. It is the nature of the beast. It is like 'the wind' in most sports. It just is. It is a thing. It must be recognized and it cannot ultimately be changed no matter how hard you try.
You can use selesnya charm to exile it, use detention sphere or chained to the rocks (Basically you have to splash in white to deal with it or have protection from blue). That´s the main reason red devotion decks all started splashing in white after the protour and people realized monoblue was becoming extremely popular, Thassa is really hard to handle, and hopefully BNG will bring answers to dealing with gods.
If you are splashing in white, last breath might be your best chance against master of waves, odd choice considering the opponent gains 4 points of life but getting rid of that master is inmense to prevent the blue deck from gaining board presence and lose tempo, if you are playing green, you might want to put some skylashers in there too against monoU, and if you play with a deck that ramps mana miscutter hydra is a great option,I play selesnya and I´ve been playing a lot against monoblue lately, in my experience these are some of the best choices against blue devotion. Though it depends on your FNM meta and people you play against, monoblack is also really strong at the moment and brad nelson got 2nd place at a star city event(scgIndy) with a selesnya prepared to face any monoU devotion deck, and he lost to a monoblack devotion.
Also Banisher priest takes care temporarily of devotion enablers or of the gods themselves, they can also open up the field for your creatures to go through

I love how the Burning Tree Emissary states it helps white devotion. 3:50
I was thinking the same thing. lol
Poor Makihito, he couldn't use dices from his M&M's box. :c
Does anyone else think that at 14:35 when Sam Black attacked garruk that Mihara thought that it was unblockable?

3:14, I'm sure Burning-Tree gives white devotion ...
It is possible that there has been an updated ruling. Not sure if there is, but maybe.
39:00 I understand the coverage guys have to get their plugs in, but I'd much rather listen to what the players are saying than get cut off by an ad.
When they showed the Emissary between game 1 and 2, they said it counts for red and white devotion. It's red and green.
Xenagos is not a mana ability since it is a loyalty ability.
Comprehensive Rule 605.1a An activated ability is a mana ability if it doesn't have a target, and it could put mana into a players mana pool and it's not a loyality ability.
In case anyone was wondering the third game starts at 27:19, what happened to the third with the blue devotion and g/r devotion?
does anyone know what kind of card sleeves they are using?
Well i'm not totally sure.. but it looks like ultra pro sleeves.
It's some of the best sleeves really nice to use.
@@MRINDYSTORM I know this is almost 6 years old but nah these aren't Ultra Pro, they don't have the holofoil Ultra Pro stamp on the sleeve

How does the new Legend rule work with Legendary Lands? cause it would seem that one of them have to be put into the graveyard?
Hey can someone explain how Mihara was able to cast Garruk, I got lost when he was using the Voyaging Satyr to untap lands and I confused, can someone please kindly explain how he was able to cast the Garruk please
Boy this is such a throwback to how Pro Tour coverage would use awful camera angles so the viewer couldn't see the board half the time
17:54 "ALL MY HARD WORK" going to soundboard
thanks a lot rashad.. turns out pithing needle does work on xenagos
misunderstood that because of this video xD
it's a loyalty ability
plz tell me if this doesn't work, but check this out. ahhhhh thx
I used a similar technique but with xenagos and managed to get a 12/12 mistcutter hydra to finish the game
might be a noob question, but doesnt the legendary rule say that there cant be 2 legendary permanents with the same name on the board? but why can both players have nykthos shrine to nyx which is a legendary land?
was actually changed recently to be that if there can't be 2 legendary permanents with the same name owned by one player so yea.
Burning Tree gives you devotion to white according to the graphic
Did they draft from a case of each set in standard?
at 10 minutes, he use the satyr and add 4 manas. He use satyr and untap nykthos. He remove 2 from pull and use nykthos a second time. So he has 2+4=6 manas in pool ). Then he put garruk.
wow, they got some pretty nice draft pools
That nykthos steal being a win...
protection from red is something you seem to be very easily missing.
because the tokens are 1/0 and get +1/+1 from master of waves, if you kill the master of waves do you kill all the tokens as well because they have zero toughness?
Yep.
Though, technically "the game" kills them as a state based action of putting 0-toughness creatures into the graveyard. :P
no you can have up to four of the same cards in your deck, plus on the field, even legendaries... right?
Imagine if kessig wolf run was legal
why thr's 2 same legendary permanent in battlefield?
shouldn't it be direct to graveyard when played??
Sam black is the best deck designer that has ever played magic the gathering
Game 3 Black vs Mihara. Instead of playing the Tidebinder mage, why didn't he just animate the Mutavault, and kill the planeswalker with unblockable?

Its just like a legendary creature
On 17:00 how did mihara cast polukranos he's 1 mama short
His Nykthos made 4 mana, because his devotion to green was 4
radiate... kick... overload!
lol at the burning-tree emissary : ''cards that care about devotion to white or red''
The correct play at 12 minutes would have been to drop a creature using garruk and then using domri to make that creature fight nightveil specter i cant believe how bad he miss played that
It gives you to devotion to red and green actually.
They changed it so that that each player can have 1 of each legendary.
At 51 min , couldn't Mihara just mizzium mortars the master of waves......all the tokens die.....he attacks with everything, feeds the scavenging ooze and win the game? or i'm missing something?
Is it me or does Sam Black look like an older Shahar Shenhar?
That means nothing everyone will get bad hands no matter what, he could've taking a mulligan, but there's always those 7 land hands
Laughter would be the play. Id love to put them both in a room of magic cards give them an hour and then see who wins. I know who im betting on lol
Gotta love Sam Blacks bondage bracelet :)
yeah. right. why dont you go to a pro tour then and win.
They changed the legendary rule,

17:40 ALL MY HARD WORK......
sam blacks hands and his motions make him look so creepy
yeah because he is only playing the deck that 2 hall of famers and arguably the two best players in the world are also playing.
he forgot to draw off of bident for thassa in the second game
wording is probably a bit off
Master of Waves has protection from red
it's constructed
every one drafts devo so i found another way to do it draft few spells and 21 creatures low cost butt butt heavy p/t u win and it surprises every one
Hard to tell what you're saying but I'm guessing you mean weenies, so mono white
pretty much with bestow crazy ability
17:48 oh no! all my hard work!!!!
17:48 got me weak!
this video says its a booster draft....
master of waves has protection from red...
Seems Ben suffers from a serious case of goof face.
Why the fuck didnt he play Arbor Colossus ...
Pro red Bobby
The deck that had 3 copies in the top 8 and won the PT is obviously trash.
Lolbidant of thissa
TOCANS
LOL
i guess pro red isn´t all that relevant then
Thasa is such a broken card in my opinion.
You can use selesnya charm to exile it, use detention sphere or chained to the rocks (Basically you have to splash in white to deal with it or have protection from blue). Awesome man I play green and totally over looked selesnya charm

hahaha this guy think he is better than sam black at deck building, look at him! LOOK AT HIM AND LAUGH!
Fool.
