My father ran this officers club back in the early 70s. Lots of memories as a kid of this base. Born and lived there and just off base in Weaver till the late 70s. Thanks for the trip. I'm sending this video to my mom and older brother.
I remember this fort when I was in the army, Fort Jackson, in 1955. Fort McClellan was talked about. I never saw it until you showed me this segment. Thank you. Walt
Those were neat murals. There was a POW camp outside of Newell, CA, just below the Oregon border. Italian prisoners built it and then German prisoners were put in it. All they left was writing chiseled into the big rock walls of a small canyon area at the back. At one time there was also a Japanese relocation camp in the area too.
One of the few, if not only, buildings you have given a tour of that was not ransacked and/or graffitied. I bet there is lots of history there. I enjoy your visits to older, vacated buildings and the respect you give to those places. Thanks, EA!
Hey big man , my grandfather worked German prisoners during that time cutting pulpwood , the camp was located in Union Springs Al. , he would pick them up in early morning and bring them back at dark , He was good to them , made sure they had food to eat , and time off , they each had to cut 1 chord of wood per day , Once they set a routine , a faster cutter would help another finish his , then they both helped the next man , and soon they worked it out to have 3 - 4 of free time every day before going back to camp , one that spoke decent English asked my grandfather to buy canvas and painting materials , and they painted pictures similar to what you are showing , I've got them now , A sailing ship on a stormy sea , a deer in the black forest , and a bowl of fruit , absolutely beautiful work , all oil on canvas . He signed them Hans Grimm 1945 , I've tried to contact people to see if I could reach a family member to see if they would want them , but the several emails I've sent to Germany have had no replies , I'll keep trying .
That’s an incredible story! I lived in Germany about 8 years. Id love to see those photos and possibly help you locate family. If so email me alabamaexplorer@gmail. Even if you don’t want help love to see some pics!!
My family moved to the area in 80 and my retired there after 26 years of service. I got to go to the club twice: once with asa guest of friend to the pool and later on to a Sader supper. It was quite impressive back in the day. Did you notice the very unique sun dial above the main, front door?
My twin brother and I went there in 2016...our Family ( Dad was Sgt Major)was stationed there when he and I were born in 1961...we heard many happy stories growing up about it- we went to church at the Sterling Chapel..another beautiful place too
Military clubhouse. Snuck in a couple of those during my stint in the Nav. Did my cruise to the Med. Part of a west Pac on my way out. We had a guy on board that caught everything every time we pulled into port. HIV wasn't even heard of when I served.
My grandfather was a Lt. Colonel drill seargant at Fort Mclellan and this is where he lived out the rest of his days with my grandmother near by in Saks. He passed in 97 and my grandmother lived on until last year the day before Christmas (2023). They had a time at those officers club parties! My grandfather looked like Elvis Pressley and my grandmother looked like Maryln Monroe so they would look like movie stars all dressed up. One night mamaw had a little more wine than usual at the same time some floosey (my gmas words 😂😂) was laughing a little too hard at papaws jokes. She told her what she thought of her and then made a dramatic exit and took off down the road on foot probably in high heels. Of course papaw ran after her lol. They would both be so excited to hear about KATT WILLIAMS purchasing the starships area to make a movie studio!
What an amazing building! I hope someone saves it and it’s place in history. I’m sure it will cost a small fortune to renovate and restore if someone does try.
I remember guys disappearing overnight after catching the dreaded hiv virus during the late 80’s early 90’s. There one day and gone the next. Beautiful building for sure thanks
Would like to see those murals saved somehow. 😢. History in one way. Thanks for taking us. Did you notice in the big room the beams looked like belts or something similar. ? ~ Texas
McClellan isn't going to reopen because the grounds and ranges are highly contaminated with PCBs, Cesium 138, Agent Orange, etc. It poisoned the soldiers who trained there.
This is way cool… but do you ever get any hair raising feelings like you’re being watched to feeling unexplainable emotions..?? Ghost, spirits,or even evil entities..??👻👻❤
The stainless steel tables are 1000 dollars each. There is ten thousand is recycling stainless. You can see the homeless were steeling the copper wire.

I remember hearing about it too when I was there, but definitely was off limits to those of us on TDY.
02:28 Those are the bodies they dug up from under the officers club floor of privates who dared to enter.

It would be amazing to see this in a time of it's glory!

Any update to this comment? No luck finding family?
Super Cool

Loved the Fireplace!!❤
The Sundial was so cool!
I've been there, swam in the pool, dinners, and dancing and drinking in the bar downstairs. Absolutely stunning in the day! 1986-1990
nice visit
Thanks

In 90 I had my senior prom at the NCO club. It was across from what are now soccer fields.
7:05 that guy in the mural is squeezing his gooseneck 😮 hunters were getting freaky in the woods
Geese are ferocious. He could well be saving that fellow from serious harm.
@@vapormissile oh my gooseneck! It even looks like the other one is grabbing his peach
@@chakmo_ol anything is art, if you do it right
That’s a shame when places like that get tore down or destroyed. I love old buildings. Hope they do something with it.
Very interesting murals...looks like one signature for the whole works. I wonder why they covered part of it up????? 🤔🤔
I wondered that too. Kinda odd
I'd like to see more of the "newly discovered paintings"..
3:49 as you enter the room something moves out of sight behind the boards near the window

I once owned a WWII US M41 field jacket that had POW markings on it. I believe it was worn by German or Japanese prisoners here stateside.
Wow that’s interesting

Were you stationed on a Carrier or other support ship?
I never went to sea. I was stationed and deployed with the marines (medical field)
I only saw Remington Hall from a distance when I was there. Too many officers meant too much saluting. 😅
It almost looks like they were there one day, and the next day, they were gone.
Yeah it’s strange

For goodness sake SAVE THIS PLACE PLEASE!! DAMN!😢
Ho ho ho, you rang ...
I wonder if the old Pistol Palace is still there?
I swam in that pool!
I lived in one of the stone houses up a hill and understood that they were built by POW’s.
I feel that it should be restored. And used as something that is needed. If not just waste all that history
👍🏽👍🏽
Mc Clellan's Not Going To Reopen Thank's To The One's Runing The State Of AL.
McClellan isn't going to reopen because the grounds and ranges are highly contaminated with PCBs, Cesium 138, Agent Orange, etc. It poisoned the soldiers who trained there.
Why is no one preserving these?!
I hope it doesn't get rejuvenated, property flippers will paint everything white & turn it into an airb&b.

The shutters are awesome
Wow those little black school chairs 300 each.
That eagle sign 2000
Above the fire place.
Those table and chairs are worth hundreds.
