Thank you alot for the beautiful tutorial. May I ask you which Piano is this? I would like to buy a digital piano. I would love also some recommendation for music recording from home. God bless!
I like to add a little something myself. C, F, A, G, F, A in the beginning. Even add more throughout the song. I've played for 20 years. I basically do the same. I like your tutorial.
Great explanation and presentation! Thanks John! Looking forward to seeing more such videos from you, specially on harmonizing popular songs from scratch..
thank you :) i realised i need so much more to learn God bless you all learning piano for God, remember to focus on worshiping Him, instead of the details and the styles during services ❤ but at the same time you can worship Him with details also, like for example I do details to describe how beautiful He is
Amazing Grace! How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me I once was lost but now am found Was blind but now I see When we've been there ten thousand years Bright shining as the sun We've no less days to sing God's praise Than when we've first begun Through many dangers, toils and snares I have already come 'Tis Grace has brought me safe thus far And Grace will lead me home Amazing Grace! How sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me I once was lost but now am found Was blind but now I see Was blind but now I see
Fantastic lesson! Clearly presented, explained and demonstrated! Love the theory and techniques behind the arrangement of this beautiful, classic hymn! Thank You!
I play Gospel music and this looks really good as an intro to playing Gospel! It has the basic devices and is easy enough for beginners. I watched many gospel piano tutorial videos on UA-cam for beginners that just explain how to play the major scale and what basic chords are, and no intermediary materials between that and their super-advanced stuff. Hopefully, fewer pianists are scared next time they hear Gospel piano playing.
Yes! I play hymns and classical and have been trying jazz and blues for the past few years. When I used to lead worship at church on piano, it was so hard to make it gospelly so I watched tons of vids and found the same problem. Simple basic lesson then they bust out this crazy gospel organ thing that's such a leap.
yes yes yes@@carolinebarley and @calvinLimuel this is an awesome lesson - it is the hardest thing to find good intermediate lessons - once you get a lesson like this you can make fast progress
Mr. John thank you very much. AMAZING tutorial. Very transparent, clearly explained and demonstrated. Great. You certainly know how to MOTIVATE. Thanks. Gracias. Danke. Greetings from Spain.
Pitched just right for me, and I can pass on these tips. Thanks John and Jonny. How about more just like this but with other songs.....eg You Raise Me Up etc.
At first, I thought I was on the wrong channel! ha I like!! Do you provide sheet music for these styles? I play but may not be the best creative (musically speaking). Thanks.
The bassline is harmonized in such a way that a lot of tension is built before the next chord. All the walk-ups have a I-ii-I/iii-IV form. F-Gm7-F9/A-Bb is the first, then you have G9-Am7-G7/B-C9sus. Notice how the third chord is always the dominant fifth relative to the last chord over the 3rd degree. That's because the pure dominant fifth would be the first chord, but as he explains in the video the bass does a walk-up cause it sounds very nice, hence the third in the bass as we get to the third chord. The rest is basic harmonization.
Hi, firstly great lesson and song. I hope Johnny gets the rest he deserves. Awesome content must say. Just a question if I may on bar 31. The last note of the melody ties in with the last note on the bass right? Is there sometimes a notation like a dotted or dashed line to join the two to make this clear as newbies like might miss this? It's a tricky part of the song so any clarification is good for beginners like me. Thanks again.
John! I am excited to have found you. I play with just my right hand and left elbow. (check out my UA-cam channel, "Gigi's one-handed Ways." I notice that not too many notes are played with your left hand at one time so I think I can make this work to some degree. I'm going to give this a good shot LOL Thank you!
Quite a few errors here, although your overall concept is good. Your narration doesn't match the notation in several spots. I'll only mention one error specifically. You are lacking a written time signature in the "Swung" example, which presumably is 3/4. If you tried that in my class, you would get an F. But there's more...
00:00 - Intro
00:34 - Amazing Grace - Traditional Style
01:14 - Amazing Grace - Swung Gospel Style
02:16 - Walking up to the note
03:12 - Step 1: Bass Walk-Up Exercise
04:03 - Grace notes
04:27 - Jazzy chords
08:17 - Ending
09:00 - Step 2: Bass Walk-Down Exercise
09:35 - Swung 8th notes
12:35 - Combine all techniques
Thank you alot for the beautiful tutorial. May I ask you which Piano is this? I would like to buy a digital piano. I would love also some recommendation for music recording from home. God bless!
Hello. Where can I get the sheet music for the swing gospel style? Thanks.
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound

Not seeing the b13 written at the end of first line.
Sukar nih..
i can't thank enough....
I like the way it's written... the way he played it first. Puts more emphasis on the lyrics.
Can someone tell me what's the theory behind how to harmonize the baseline?
The bassline is harmonized in such a way that a lot of tension is built before the next chord. All the walk-ups have a I-ii-I/iii-IV form. F-Gm7-F9/A-Bb is the first, then you have G9-Am7-G7/B-C9sus. Can I not download the actual sheet music with your edits?
I thought you were Matt Demon for a while. How funny. Anyway thanks, great vid
LOL, thanks for watching!
argggggg mean sheet music now
Can we not play gospel style using keyboard
Chuckled when he said "Add some color to it" (I'm black.)
😂😂😂
Piano with John but without Jonny.
Actually there are few pianists that play and form PWJ and all off them are great and top notch tutors, I can tell :)
Use more jazz
That ain't it, that isn't gospel, or atleast not black gospel. Your timing is so square.
Quite a few errors here, although your overall concept is good. Your narration doesn't match the notation in several spots. I'll only mention one error specifically. You are lacking a written time signature in the "Swung" example, which presumably is 3/4. If you tried that in my class, you would get an F. But there's more...
That Gm7 in the first walking bass sequence is actually just a Gm.
