Dear Alice, I really hope that you come across this letter to you. Singers come and singers go. There are the ones that display tremendously impressive chops are swept up by record labels in the dozens. For the most part they're then overproduced and USED to impress the "masses" for a while...but truly sensitive and genuine artists like you are few and far between Alice. You are a rare flower. I lived in L.A. for 15 years and studied to be a "studio guitarist" at the Musicians Institute In Hollywood. From the other comment that I read here I get the impression that you were given a brief contract with Sony or another one of those money grubbing low life outfits and when their cash registers didn't ring fast enough you were cut loose (that's only the impression I got but I believe that it may be the case based on my long and deep observations of the record business jungle from the inside). Please don't look for any of your sense of artistic worthiness or self esteem in the opinions of the "music industry" toward you. That's all that the record companies are...a profiteering industry that doesn't give a damn about musical artistry at all. They only come around when they smell £££$$$ and mediocrity is actually where they find their most turnover and profit. Record sales are in no way a measure of musical artistry...McDonald's sells a lot of cheeseburgers, but does that mean that they're selling the best food? Go out and perform anywhere and everywhere Alice...Please! With the aid of a trustworthy agent/publicist you will find the people who really love what you can do with a song. You don't need to be "overproduced" in some kind of grandiose spectacle! I'm sure that you're familiar with Ella Fitzgerald. There weren't light shows, choreography, elaborate sets & costumes, etc for her. Ella just stood there and sang! From what I've heard and seen of you so far audiences will begin flocking in like lonely lovers coming home. You don't have to move to L.A. and scrabble around for a record deal from people that are only really interested in your potential to provide them with a quick profit...Perform and you will find the people who REALLY love what U can do to enable them to get in touch with their deeper levels of emotion and help them to fully sense their hearts in a way that many, many (possibly most) people just can't do on their own. This is the greatest gift that a true artist really brings to the world. Of course it goes without saying that you should be well cared for...but please, Alice, don't feel that your value as an artist can ever be measured by great sums of £££...And, BTW, when and if you take my humbly offered advice and do (as I am absolutely sure you can) create some quite large and noticeable following through live appearances, the record company scum will come crawling back and you'll be the one dictating the terms to them ;) I don't know all about who you really are on the inside, but from what I've been lucky enough to hear and see on the outside I can truly say that I am sharing with you from a place of very real and caring love. I discovered her about 90 minutes ago. She has a great voice and seems a precious person. Been listening to her for these 90 minutes and looking where she is at now. It seems she hasnt made the greats yet, in popularity, but who cares about that? I have been a fan of David Sylvian (Japan aswell). Japan had 1 small hit, but David nothing. Yet he has a dedicated public and has made really good music. And that will never fade. Most modern 'stars' are really nothing, musically. Just nothing but production garbage for the masses of idiots. The people without ears, i always call them. Its just the way it is. Then again, Amy didnt get there on day 1 either. I just can't listen to this song with tearing up. The way she sings this, just other worldly. I remember when Jackson Browne came out with this song on his debut album It started out at #80 on Billboard's Hot 100 list and soared to # 8! It was constantly played on the radio. Drove me crazy! To be honest it wasn't a favorite of mine. When I saw this song on Alice's album I thought to myself "Oh no! Not that one!" Boy was I wrong! I melted first time I heard it. I had to check the lyrics to make sure it was Jackson Browne's and sure enough. I wish reactors would react to Alice singing this song. So far, no one has. I commented on those who have reacted to Jackson singing it and asked them to play Alice's rendition. Actually only 2 reactors so far and they haven't! And its to bad because if they and their subscribers could, they would, I'm sure, be totally mesmerized how she she sings this song and then there's the lyrics! You know back then, when Jackson released this song, I never did pay attention to the lyrics. I guess for one thing, performed too fast for me or whatever. However with Alice singing it, I realized how beautiful and thought provoking the lyrics really are! Its really a nice song and Alice turned it, in my opinion into a standout!
