    The horn and candle are good historical pieces for keeping at of trouble with the law. If you had to go somewhere at night and had a light of some kind, the guards knew you weren't up to anything because you were announcing your presence. Same thing with the horn if you were traveling through a forest or something. If you were blowing a horn every once in a while, you were announcing your presence to the foresters that you were there and not poaching.

      @Flamewolf14 I don't have any proper sources as of yet. The horn bit I heard from a Robin Hood UA-cam channel. The light bit I got from Modern History TV. So for now I would like it under interesting and plausible, but not confirmed. I need to follow up. I'm just starting to try and becoming a hobby historian.

      Ladies have it easier because aprons were common for all social levels of women since time unnumbered. However, aprons for men generally had to be specific to his trade. Some professionals that wore aprons were cooks, butchers, metal smiths, farriers, doctors, and carpenters (mostly when working with paints or other finishes).

    The easily forgotten item I ensure I always carry is note-taking gear. There is no shortage of nice leatherbound journals out there, however you can also simply buy a leather cover from some booths and bind the inside with rite-in-the-rain sheets as I have, if mud and rain are a concern.

      Have you considered the original tablet? It had wax on one side, and could be used with a stylus. They were expensive, but could be a much cleaner alternative to board and chalk and sturdier than pen and paper.

    • @luna7157
      @luna7157 2 місяці тому +3

      @dandelion_fritters From what I gather, wax tablets are fairly limited in surface area, and to "erase" your writing, you must heat the end of the stylus in an open flame. They're very cool, but the shareability and data-compactness of sheets is hard to beat. I'd like to get my hands on a wax tablet and play with one though.
      I neglected to mention this earlier, but pencils are also an option, in the form of wrapped graphite, using slightly softened bread as an eraser. I personally opt for a modern pen out of convenience, though I have brought a quill writing set with me once. It's only a little cumbersome, requiring you have a fairly even surface to set up on.

      @ That’s fair, but I find the tech interesting considering that if one did not have a flame in some fashion they would be way worse off, so in a fire-dependent situation you would have little issue with that. But in our electricity-dependent environments it’s very much a problem. I do agree that the storage space is a bit of a problem. It’s meant to be used more like a flip book with a pen then a book to be preserved in permeability.

    Adventurer, in the real, would have carried a small sewing kit. A large darning needle, smaller one for thread. A little bit of sewing thread, some darning wool, and maybe a bit of sinew. Might be in a bone that is clean and corked, might be folded up in a small bit of cloth or leather, or Saami style one. Is it needed if you're just larping or going to a ren faire? No. If you want to impress me as a reenactor, you have the ability to repair your clothing because it is your first layer of shelter, and your first layer of immersion.

    11:33 - "Would it be possible to combine the war horn and the drinking horn?" Yes it is! I actually have one like this that I got at (Scarborough) Ren Faire in Texas several years ago, that has an aluminum mouthpiece. But the blow hole in the mouthpiece is threaded, and it came with a little screw-in plug that converts it into a drinking horn. And to add even more versatility, I've found that the knob on the end of the screw-in piece makes for a handy little bowl-packer for one's pipe (back when I still smoked), but YMMV on that front.

    Big tip on lanterns and similar light housing systems that do not rely on translucency of the whole form: use a layer of the brightest white base coat you can find and coat any non-transparent/translucent parts on the sides that face the light. Then, once cured, apply the most reflective mirror paint to the white sections. This will maximize the ability to reflect the light and will send the normally wasted light out and illuminate the shine area FAR better.
    Additionally;
    • if a lantern is intended to be carried and not set down for ambient lighting of a 360° range, you can mirror coat the windows that would be directed toward you so as to bounce that light everywhere else, and to also help save your night vision.
    • If the walls of the lantern can slide, you can mirror coat the entire interior and use walls up as full ambient, some walls down as varying types and strengths of directed fan light
    • you can easily make a hot glue bull’s eye dot on a side (or each side) which uses a seed bead on a string or a button on a flap to cover a pinprick in the mirroring to make a super bright ultra directed cone/beam that uses all the light being bounced to amplify through the tiny aperture.
    •• if you make the bull’s eye apertures carefully you can even mount slots for images (these can be permanent or you can have insertable slides) and those images can be projected by the light in order to send signals, scare enemies, get measurements, or so much more, depending on how accurate you make the slides. (Like you can make a distance grid for archers/spell casters/seeing how long till enemies reach you on foot. Or maybe have coats of arms to declare allegiance, or a white flag, or some holy symbol or…)

    With the drinking cup, if you want to carry something that isn't quite as bulky as a tankard, and don't want to carry a tin cup, try getting a kuksa (or even making your own, very easy with a crook knife). Very common in the bushcraft community, not too large, lightweight, and looks appropriate. Plus, because it's shallower than a tankard, you can use it as a bowl (for stew/soup) as well.

    For the bottle, a Bota Bag is still one of the best starting options there, especially if you're willing to do a bit of work such as redying the leather and, possibly, some paint for the edges. with the more modern ones. Possibly replace the cap and strap, but the bag works well, just do not try stitching with it or using methods to add patterns using a pyrography stylus or laser since the heat could breech the bladder inside and ruin the bag

    Those are great analogs for EDC item’s recommended for hikers and campers. The “spare piece of cloth” represents nicely the middle eastern shemagh (sp?) that became popular among so called preppers after the recent middle eastern military actions by the US.
    A whistle or other noisemaker has been a staple for hikers since I was a Boy Scout in the 1950s. Water carrying devices like canteens, same, but they have a long lineage from prehistory through the World Wars. Light making equipment, same, but often one person in a group can be tasked with that. As for games, we know that Roman soldiers would bring dice or a sort of board game using rocks as pieces (that I can never remember the name of), and these days it’s not uncommon to see miniature decks of cards in pre-made “go bags”. A leather chessboard actually works, you just need to unroll and lay it out as soon as you set up your shelter. I’ve seen them sold at ren faires along with carved wooden pieces. A cloth “board” can also be painted, dyed, or embroidered on the side of the cloth bag you carry the pieces in. I haven’t seen those for sale but I’m thinking about making one. Ooh, the pieces could be carved from light and dark woods, no paint required, and if you lose a piece e you can just whittle a new one in a few minutes.
    Overall a great video full of good ideas.

    As for your horn doubling as a drinking vessel, it's possible, sure, but the thing is you don't want to be drinking straight out of bare horn, and any kind of permanent food-safe coating is going to mess with the acoustics, so you would need some kind of removable liner. Not a tall order on its own, but I can't think of a material that would to be waterproof, food-safe, and flexible enough to pack away(otherwise you defeat the purpose) while still being appropriate for a quasi-medieval setting. I suppose you could just use plastic and say it's some kind of mystical Elven fabric, but I feel like you'd be breaking the spirit of the endeavor at that point. What I would do is, instead of having the horn double as my cup, have them nest together, with the cup inside the horn. The horn would then serve as a holster of sorts, and could also act as a stand by mounting folding legs on the outside.
    Dice are probably the cheapest and easiest gaming option. With a $5 bag of small wooden cubes from a hobby store(the ones I chose are about 1/3 of an inch i think, maybe 1/4), a sewing needle, and a lighter you can make enough dice for a whole group in a matter of minutes. Just hold that needle over the flame until it glows and then poke the cube to burn the dots in. They're so cheap and easy to make that you won't mind giving them away, and won't fuss if you lose a few.
    For my water bottle, I got a Sawyer backpacking filter that comes with a replaceable plastic bladder, made a simple oiled leather cover for the bladder, covered the filter in thin leather wrapped with twine, and drilled a hole in a wine cork to stopper the spout(not that it needs it, but otherwise I'd have a very anachronistic bit of black plastic sticking out the end). From the outside you'd never know it was modern tech.
    Now, my lantern, you're going to love this. Three-section folding wooden picture frame. Added a hook closure, rope handle, and separate floor to form a triangular enclosure, and replaced two of the original panes with mirrors to amplify the light. Packs flat between two thin boards with a leather hinge and leather flaps on the remaining three sides that close with a button to form a nice secure package. Sets up in a few seconds.
    My backpack frame unfolds into a short stool. I got it at a faire but it wouldn't be hard to DIY. I've also seen versions where the frame can be broken down and reassembled into a stool.

    I will add that you CAN have a chess set with you wherever you go! Just carry the pieces in a drawstring bag, then a "board" on a piece of fabric. You can then unroll it and set up anywhere, but it takes up no more space than a scroll ✨

    For making the horn into a drinking horn, get a piece of cork, like a wine cork, attach it to base with leather and make the end pieces swappable to go from blowing to drinking really easily. Thats what mine has.

    Super simple flashlight to ambient glow trick: grab a dog toy or catch toy glow in the dark ball (or other translucent pale color of rubbery material) that has a battery/ice core/treat pocket which is about the size of your flashlight, or a tiny bit smaller, take out any internal components, and fit the ball over the head of the flashlight. It should stay attached as most flashlights have a flare or ridge, and the compression from the material holds it in too. When you turn it on now it will diffuse the light in all directions gently, giving a wonderful aura of ambient light. The max range and max directed brightness are cut down sure, but, it now functions great as a lamp. Plus it looks like you cast a light spell and have a glowing orb in hand or above your hand. (Or above your head if using a torch hat!)
    If you have a Much larger ball or other shape (oil paper ball, light colored stuffed shape with clear filling, fogged glass tide float…) you can drop a wide light flashlight, or several lights into it and make a huge glowing moveable brazier

    Late thought: Something to sit on - take a look at the Townsends video on YT for making your own 'oil cloth'. Just a piece of cotton or linen cloth, some linseed oil, maybe some coloring agent (or use colored cloth to start with). Once its set/dry, you can use it as part of a 'blanket roll' to hold other gear, or just roll it or fold it up as part of your regular gear (DO NOT ROLL/FOLD OILCLOTH UP INTO A BUNDLE IF IT NOT COMPLETELY SET/DRY - IT MAY CATCH FIRE). If its big enough you can even use it as an improvised shelter from the rain (or incontinent birds - DAMHIK)

    I added a couple of these recently in my Elven Ranger kit (made a conch horn from a shell myself).

    My kit started out as an accessory for an annual Ren Faire, but it started out with a Friar's Robe (and a good one, we got caught in a major downpour one year and the water never got through the heavy wool robe) and a leather belt (not in keeping with a Franciscan cincture but I can explain that away). Then there was the leather accessory for a water bottle (which I sometimes didn't wear) my leather purse (where my wallet, keys, and cellphone was stored), and finally my wooden mug (because I just had to buy it). I guess the next items would be the lantern and horn.

    I could've used the advice about something to carry your water in a couple weeks ago. I participated in my first ever living history event. It's was 80° super dry and dusty. I know right Arizona dry and dusty imagine that. I was dress as a 1860's lady, wearing a chemise, aorset, and Caroline under my dress which just happened to be dark blue and stuck standing out in the sun all day. We had access to water bottles but as one gentleman told me it ruined the illusion. I did my best to keep it hidden either under the table or in a box, but it was impossible to hide when I needed a drink, but I had to stay hydrated.

      There's always worse, for your mentioned timeframe(I cover a bunch 😂), the worst I've had was the 150th Gettysburg with full wool uniform, sack coat not frock coat portraying Co. B-2nd Wi of Iron Brigade fame, out in the sun, marched an hour, and IIRC 104 on the field. I always wonder about the "lost" technology our forebearers had to "survive" if not thrive.
      Also, no matter what anyone else says, if you're out trying to do "the thing" whatever it may be, don't let the stitch nazis and pedants ruin your time. If it's needed and "ruins the look", I'll defer to the needed anytime. So, hopefully, that pedantic miscreant caught some karma and hopefully it doesn't douse the flame of pain for the hobby.

      @@darylmorningthat's awesome! Yeah I wonder about that myself. Ironically I was watching the weather and all week it said it would be in the low 60s until the day before the 80s for two days straight.
      As for the gentleman who told me it ironed the illusion I told him that I had to stay hydrated. He agreed with me and shortly there after a lady from my camp brought me another water bottle. We were all just trying to stay hydrated.
      This experience was something my 16 yr old wanted to do. Since it was a family friendly group I signed us all up, her, myself, and my 3 younger boys. It was a good experience. Next event is all colonial, so it's time to hit the sewing machines again. 😉

    Number 4 is extra important for long outdoor adventures, tbh. One idea would be to have it double as a pouch instead of a scarf. You could carry your game and your firetools in it! I imagine a round/oval bit of leather big enough for your butt, maybe with a thin felted wool lining for warmth, and with holes along the edge. Drawstring in the holes, _bam,_ pouch!

    Here's how I solved my list:
    UCO candle lantern 🎉 cause it's brass and looks old
    Tobacco from my fun MYOG bamboo pipe, that's my elixir.

    ..
    For a game thing I have a stack of cards but I don't bring it..for down time, I play a thumb piano but I leave it at the storage cause I'm actually homeless and the case doesn't prove it much warmth so it goes flat. That, and it's kind of big.

    A horn? No but I have a bamboo flute

  • @najroe

    my light source is a folding candle lantern with oiled horn window, not very bright but good enough to read by.
    Kuusa cups are great and very traditional.
    my waterbottle is a stainless steel piece but outside is copper plated so it looks like a tinned copper flask which is traditionall (romans used some), I glued a false seam on it to make it looke hand made and use a large natural cork instead of the plastic it came with, carry pouch is made from hemp just 2mm cordage made into a net bag, sling is actually a worn but still functioning balearic sling so multiple uses.
    for game dice, hnefatafl, chess, checkers and Iagno are my preference. ad all four boardgames can share a board and in many cases pieces can be shared.
    for ground cloth I use a piece of ooled silk, waterproof and lightweight and also a good extra piece of rain gear.

    • @brucelee3388
      @brucelee3388 2 місяці тому +1

      The fake seam is not really necessary, old time copper workers were skilled enough to make ('raise') mugs and flasks from a single sheet of metal, it just took time - and the Romans even had metal spinnning lathes - its what they used to make helmets for their 'Auxilliares'.
