  • In this one, we unbox my brand new Hi Tech Diamond Flat Lap and polish some beautiful stones! We have been using my faceting machine for all of our previous polishing and cabbing but it is definitely a tool that is not intended for that purpose, so we can now retire the faceting machine for exclusively faceting and enjoy this new world that has been opened up to us! To break in our amazing new tool, i picked out a variety of rocks to polish: a Montana Moss agate, a Teepee Canyon Agate, a handful of Bear Canyon agates, a slab of South Dakota chalcedony, some silver sheen obsidian, and to finish off, one absolutely incredible iris agate! After spending many hours on this new tool already, I am SOOO happy with it! I would highly recommend this fantastic model (the Hi Tech 8" all-u-need) to anyone in search of a highly reliable product for polishing and cabbing! But! The fun does not stop there! In this one, we also announce the giveaway winner for our 16,000 subscriber giveaway! I hope you all enjoy this one and I will have another one out very soon!

    Just starting some polishing of rocks on an old 6" flat lap with a combination of the hi tech diamond resin pads and lower grit diamond discs. The main issue I've had is chipping/pitting in the quartz pocks in the agates. Hopefully more of an issue with some factures going through a couple that catch and chip out (and also cause small scratches along the way out. Even though it wasn't a how-to, learned a couple things watching your technique. Off to find some other videos of yours and others to learn more.

      Iris agate is some amazing stuff😄 the rainbow color is caused by light defracting through the transparent banding, so you need to have a very thin slab and then back light it to get any color to show😄 we will be doing a video all about iris agates very soon!

    I've polished a few pieces of chalcedony that were already flat and they had those same rings and bands. I never thought of cutting a thicker piece in that direction on purpose. Awesome result. I have a piece of Nebraska Blue Agate, it's actually chalcedony, that is a thick seam like yours was. I think I now know what direction to cut it.
    P.S. been watching your videos for a while and just realized I wasn't subscribed. So, I hit that button and rang that bell.

    Hi Theo, I have followed you since you began some years back as well as other rock hounds from Colorado. I live in Florida but collect rocks in the Dominican Republic. Most of my finds are varicolored jaspers, these are fairly easy to identify. Many others are not. They all take a high to excellent polish and are quite beautiful. I was wondering if you belonged to a rock club that could help with identification. I would like to join and use the collective expertise of your fellow members. Thanks Larry PS When visiting Fl. I can show you where to collect fossil shells, coral and colorful flint.

    Hiya Theo, hey I have one just like that one, and I love it. ❤ once you get used to it you will love it too, I've bought extra disks and I use 100, 180, 260, 600, 3,000 and I have what came with the flat lap 325, 1200, 3,000 the first ones are diamond grit sorry about that, but I also use cerium oxide to polish. And I use a glue brush when I clean them, I spray water and run it over the disk using the brush cleans all the white stuff off, I run it on 6 till it dries off and I use a rag to clean the edge of the disk off, and then your done and ready to use the next one. I get a mirror finish on all my stones. The stuff inside the Syringe will give you a ok polish but the cerium oxide will give you the polish your looking for, I promise 😉. Awesome video and congrats to the winner 🏆.
    I hope you have a awesome blessed new year. Cya!

    Awesome video as always. All the rocks turned out really nice. I still haven't been able to use my hi tech flatlap and can't wait. Do to health reasons I had to put my lapidary work on hold for now. Slowly getting better and hope to use it a lot this year. Picking a favorite rock is so hard to do. They all are beautiful in their own way. But I think I would say the Montana agate was my favorite. Thanks for sharing.

      Thank you Theo. I'm working on it very hard to get better. It all takes time. In the spring I will be setting up my workshop area. So I will get lots of use out of all my equipment. In the meantime I will just keep watching all my favorite people on here.

    Theo, at about the 12 minute mark you showed a Bear Canyon agate that had some errant polishing compound that had landed in the crevices. Other than using a soft brush, do you have any easy advice on how to remove that, especially for compound that has landed in druzy. Thanks and love your work!

    • @TheoKellison
      @TheoKellison  2 роки тому

      Thanks so much!😄 and Yes actually! Soft toothbrush is definitely my go-to but sometimes that is not enough so i will fill a bowl woth warm water that is loaded with dawn and just let it soak for awhile. Not sure why but it really helps soften up the compound so you can come back in with a toothbrush again to remove the compound. For compound that is especially stubborn i actually have a waterpik intended for dental cleaning that works wonders on cleaning those hard to reach spots in druzy pockets😄

    Pro-tip (well, more likely amateur tip I suppose...) -- Take one of the sheets that come with the flat lap discs (they're like instruction manuals in that they typically get thrown away before the product is out of the box...) -- Save at least one and hang it on the wall above/behind the machine so you ALWAYS have an available reference for color/grit, since they're not labelled. I'm sure it's something that most will memorize after a couple years..... I, on the other hand, have to reference the sheet every time I turn the machine on... :-)
    That iris agate is incredible!

    Congrats on your new toy Theo. That iris agate is breathtaking! A question: have you ever put rough-trimmed, slabbed pieces in a tumbler? This is what I want to try soon. I don't have a flat lap, but saws and a cabbing arbour...sometimes am tired of cabbing; have so many cabs...not complaining, just sayin and curious to try something different. Ps: Love watching all your shows, they brighten my dreary winter days and inspire me. Thank-you.

    I owned mine over 10 years before the screw and receiver in the middle needed work. Having metal diamond bonded plates is a huge beneficial upgrade for it. You can still use all the original equipment it comes with in the discs. The padded disc helps you do domed more easily until you get it down when it becomes not necessary anymore. A better water delivery system is another modification just a fountain pump with a five gallon bucket and plastic line solves it. Been a Lapidary for over 35 years it's the best system I've ever owned and done 1000s of stones. Flat, domed and INTARSIA. Enjoy.

    I just got a facet machine for Christmas! Can't wait to use it but will have to use it as a flat lap! Do have a question! Can I use the same grit disks for both cabbing and faceting? This will be very new to me and I really like what I see you and others make! I tumble a lot and make jewelry with wire wrapping! Have sold quite a few and given some to family and friends! I really enjoy being creative but I do need to learn the proper way to use everything! Meminer and Michigan Rocks are really helpful guys! The whole rockhounding community is awesome! Thanks for sharing!

    So glad Rookie Rockhounder introduced you during a Maker event. Stunning work. Just starting out hounding in Beaver County, Utah. Can't wait to learn what to do with the huge piles of agate, chalcedony, etc. Cheers
