Good luck to Atletico but the idea that was some kind of a defensive masterclass is ridiculous. They were completely outclassed in normal time 34 shots, 11 on target woodwork twice,, you called that a defensive masterclass WTF,, Oblack save their life's and Adrian fucks off for Liverpool simple. ATM punished a massive mistake that wouldn't have happened if Allison was in goal.. and that goal make Liverpool loose their heads,, SIMPLE.

It wasnt only that liverpool pushed them back. They clearly had a plan to lay deep and defend. It was the perfect game plan. As soon as Liverpool scored their 2. goal, AM first then started to attack, and scored two easily. It was Atléticos game plan that allowed 30+ shots on goal. They allowed liverpool the possesion of the ball, and knew it would lead to shots. Dont flatter urselfs too mutch, you lost 3-2 at home

Well, 34 shots and more than two-third possession! Everybody knew that it was going to happen. Everybody knew that Atletico were going to build a solid wall. That's why this match was so hyped up. And why is everything on Adrian now? Why is he been used as a scapegoat now? Well, alright. The first one might've been a mistake but it could've been handled. You had the "best defenders", right? And before they scored, it was 2-0 so it's clear that Atletico were going to go all on attack and were going to be desperate so Liverpool could've used their mind. Now, what about the second and third goal? Don't tell me that they panicked. It was Anfield, right? You simply give them the credit that they deserve. It was indeed a masterclass by Atletico.

Not at all. Simeone came understanding that if he scored he will pile a lot of pressure on Liverpool, and that is what he did. Every time Liverpool scored, ATM scored. Diego is renown for his defensive tactics, check his other games. He new that his team will not possess much of the ball and so there was no need to press. You saw them give away possession so easily throughout the game. It wasn't a mistake, it was part of the play. By allowing Liverpool to run around with the ball, ATM fatigued them both mentally and physically. Then when Liverpool were all-out-attack, ATM pounced on mistakes. That's always their style. Simeone is also an extra-time specialist, that is why you saw him bring Llorente and Morata in extra time. They are dribbling strikers and extremely dangerous in 1v1 or even 1v2 situations as they can go past one, two or even three defenders with ease. By bringing them on, when Liverpool's defense was fatigued, Simeone knew that they would score as long as Liverpool continued to attack aggressively with everyone including their fullbacks. Liverpool signed their defeat when they allowed all their fullbacks to make forward runs, leaving 2v2 situations between dribbling strikers (Morata and Llorente) and their centerbacks (Virgil and Gomez). Klopp should have asked Robertson to sit back in a back 3 as he is both ferocious and fast. He would have helped them with the Morata problem. So yeah, it was a defensive masterclass with intent to hit the opposition on transition. However, the inexperience of Adrian also significantly contributed to the loss. But who is to say Athletico won't have scored if Alison scored knowing that they put one past him in the first leg. That is football.
Park the bus is the unit of defending that enables you to get the result when it matters most, especially when everyone knows that trying to be expansive at anfield is no logical and almost no guarantee that you gonna get the results. So Simeone used his better tactics. Even in movies, the starring does not always match the costarring but instead, he uses a plan B to end a story.

I watched many masterclass defensive matches by Atletico but this was not one of them. It was actually down to Liverpool's poor finishing rather than defensive efforts that decided the tie. It is a transition year for them since many of their old guards left and a new generation is coming up.

I don't know if this was a masterclass, or Athletico got lucky, but then that's coming from the defensive plays I have witnessed as a youngster of Italy of the 90s. The first leg was definitely a defensive masterclass but the second wasn't to be honest. Unlike in the first leg where Atleti conceded no shots on target and big chances they did concede 11 Shots on target and 3 big chances. I'm very happy for them, I watch their matches in La Liga, but labeling that performance a defensive masterclass isn't just accurate. Still a great win for them at Anfield, they took their chances while Liverpool failed to fully maximize and that what's important in knockout matches.
I depends how you look at it I think. They allowed a lot of chances for Liverpool, but almost all of them were bad chances due to the tight marking in the traps. 34 shots, 11 on target, two goals. That is either amazingly bad finishing or the result of intelligent defenders blocking lanes and opportunities with good positioning. The Atletico keeper was very good, but what happened to those 23 shots blown into the stands by Liverpool? He had nothing to do with that. The defenders probably did. By contrast Atletico had 11 shots, six on target, three goals, so they were just a lot more efficient with their chances. If we focus on the shots on target then the match was in fact not as lopsided as it looked. 11 to six. That's basically a competitive game, and I think Madrid fans would have gladly taken that if you had told them before the game. Simeone will win with stats like that.

It was not a defensive masterclass and Simeone himself would even admit to it he wouldn't want to concede such a big number of shots even if most would be low quality. Great performance generally for them but far from being a defensive masterclass and understably so as Liverpool are a strong team and were playing at home.

You didn't mention the crucial substitution that Simeone did when he brought Llorente for Costa, then they had an extra man in the midfield and nullified the presence of Firmino.. I think this changed the whole game.. Liverpool should have focused on defence when they were 2-0 up because Atleti didn't had any creative player apart from Felix to provide any attacking threat.. Simeone's substitution and Oblak's brilliance was the difference between the two sides..

In the first half Atletico displayed some kind of attack due to their front two and while they were doing that, they were losing their defensive shape which Liverpool were capitalizing. Simeone saw that and he brought Llorente which gave him the extra man in midfield. If you noticed, Atletico didn't even attempted to attack. Their plan was to stretch the game till the penalties where they had more probability to win the tie. Llorente's goals and Adrian mistakes were a bonus which made the game finished before the penalties.

They were really poor and played the game in a manner which suits Atleti.Not even a single shot on target tells a lot about this so called best team. If they would have scored there or even losing to Atletico by 2-1, then the Adrian's mistake wouldn't have counted. Remember he is a 2nd choice keeper and came from a relatively poor side West Ham. IMO, Liverpool underestimated Atleti and has cost them heavily. You can evidently see their arrogance even after losing 1st leg. This is what happen when you don't respect your opponent. I think Liverpool got exactly what they deserve.

That was not a defensive master class. They had over 30 shots against them, over 10 on target and their keeper was motm. Their first leg certainly was tho.
That is why it was a defensive masterclass. Liverpool were forced to make shots from twelve yards, with ATM knowing how good their goal keeper was. However, Oblak is part pf ATM's defense. He played his role in the team, just like other players.

Basically ATM just parked the bus. They only allow LFC to launch attack outside the penalty area. Oblak's is good at saving dangerous shots so he is also played a crucial role in ATM' defense. When you play against an aggressive team like LFC, you need to defend well as a team

Last night was a Goalkeeping Masterclass and not a defensive masterclass at all. Yes Liverpool had many shots from distance but they also had a number of shots near or inside the 6 yard box which would be scored more often than not. Robbo and Firmino could've easily scored their extremely high xg chances and you won't be talking about a defensive masterclass.
Their defense couldn't close down spaces, track runners or in general stop conceding chances all game long. It was anything but a masterclass.
Take a 5 a side game in which your striker scores 5 goals all by himself and win the game 5-3. Would that be a good team performance or a good individual performance?
Conclusion:
1) AM defenders struggled with aerial battle, crossing.
2) Adrian weak with low - knee height shot
3) If opposition bypass the gengenpressing with accurate long pass to running attackers Liverpool is fucked. Liverpool defensive players seems to be afraid to do tactical foul sometimes, just ball watching without committing. Having two attackers in front is better.

Van dijk allow morata to run towards him rather than attacking him . If He had attacked him , either he won the ball or he got a yellow card , that could stop from conceding . Poor defending from van dijk.
You're totally right. I love Van Djik, he's calm and relaxed but he's sometimes too passive and lacks aggression. He should have closed down morata and made a challenge as he had henderson to cover him.
That whole game virgil van dijk cleaned everything up. He also was constantly running foward with the ball, starting attacks. So 105 minutes can you forgive him if he was fatigued.
You can talk only about van dijk if you want. This team played better deserved to win, but mistakes can happen. There keeper won them the tie. Our 2nd choice keeper lost us the tie. Thats how it is.

The best manager Jurgen Klopp learned a tactical defensive lesson in this match. At the moment Firmino scored Liverpool should have made changes fabinho sould have come in for Henderson that just have come from an injury and Mane that had a bad game should have come in for Origi for any counterattack with Salah. Keep the 2-0 and we would have been still in the champions. Buuuut it is Klopp I cant say nothing to him.

Defensive masterclass? yeah. If you put all 11 players behind ball cramped inside the box in their own half, how can you it master class. It was just a defensive unit whose keeper saved almost everything thrown at them, while Liverpool's keeper situation was a pure mess that day. Without the Adrian mistake there was little to no chance of Liverpool conceeding a goal. After conceeding that first goal, the already stretched Liverpool were pushing more further forward allowing Atletico more space than they had for the first 100 minutes of the game.
Come on man, if you're gonna be a statsman atleast look at the game properly. It was a game of Goalkeeping masterclass at Atletico's end that parked the bus, Klopp was the real master here. He broke the dreadlock that couldn't be broken in the last match with some proper tactics by overloading Atletico's left side, then again with the substitutions he switched that pressure to the other side.
Klopp beat every little pressure of Atleti. Pinned them down for the entire 90 mins, Atleti was winning aerial duels only inside their box only the second ball to fall in a LFC player.
Am a barca fan but lets be honest what defence masterclass are you talking about? Take a look at the stats if liverpool scored 20% of their chances the match would have been finished already, the only masterclass was made by oblak and the 2 substitutions made by semoine.

It doesn't mean shots will not be shot at you, it means that they will not go into the back of the net because you close spaces, force players into bad angles, or let your world-class goalkeeper deal with it. Nevertheless, some of it was luck.
A defensive masterclass doesn't involve conceding 2. There were a lot of mitigating factors resulting in what happened, primarily Liverpool's lack of ruthlessness. Had they been more clinical, this conversation wouldn't be happening. Defensive masterclasses don't involve the opposition failing to be clinical. Moving on.

Its all bullshit. The game was decided by Alyson not playing and Adrian making a knockout error. There is really nothing else to say. If Alyson played, Liverpool go through without any problems.
That's just a standard defending strategy that any team can do. If Adrian never gave the ball and did a decent save on the shot, Atletico won't even score a single goal.
After Atletico's first goal, Liverpool went all out because the away goal disadvantage will make them lose. That left their defense open and 2 more goals for Atletico.

Please, the second leg was not a defensive masterclass. They were saved by Oblak and Liverpool should have scored more. The first leg performance, however, was brilliant, only tainted by the fact that Atletico used very negative tactics to force Mane's early substitution. In the CL, one wants to see games where teams play each other on the pitch using their football skills, not their ability to sway referees and get players sent off.
I enjoy the video. However, I suggest that you speak a bit slower. I think it will make your video and analysis much more enjoyable.
Going slower also gives time and space for the laypeople to breathe and follow the flow, but this is only my suggestion.
