There's actually a lot to Kevin's remark. Historically, when slaves were freed, they could pick a last name when they didn't have one and a lot of them picked names they liked or names they thought described them. You see a lot of names like Lion, King, Freeman. That happens a lot in latin culture as well. My name is Oberon, after the mythological king of fairyland. I know a guy named Julio Cesar, my mom is dating a guy named Marco Tulio, I know a guy named Achilles, a girl named Khalissia. Besides, it's not just blacks and latinos. If you look at records of baby names, you see a lot of people name kids after fictional characters from stories that were popular at the time. For example, there are plenty of recently born babies named after Game Of Thrones Characters. I even know a guy who named his daughters Wendy and Crystal, after Peter Pan and The Dark Crystal, his two favourite movies.

My mother worked at a hospital here in Dallas in the neonatal ward. One of her responsibilities was to have the mom fill out the birth certificate facts. One being name of said baby. The new mother wrote Gonoreea as the babies name. My mother looked at and asked her where she got the name from and was told that while sitting in the waiting area she spotted a pamphlet with that word on it and thought it was beautiful. My mom explained to her that she should not name her baby girl Gonorrhea! She changed her mind. True story! That poor lil baby dodged a bullet that day!
