- Have you ever tried this?! Street photography with the Fujifilm X100V - My secret weapon!
This is a HUGE street photography tip for all beginners and experienced street photographers like myself. if you are ever stuck in a superb location with your Fujifilm x100v or older models, but not finding anything inspiring. Remember it's 'secret weapon'.. make sure to practice using the camera with this setting on too! You can of course just keep a screw-on filter in your camera bag for any other camera type
I hope you enjoy the vid
Ga :-)

Just watched this video 7 months later, and loved your photos! My two favorites #5 and #9... extremely unique and distinct in that they aren't the 'usual or expected.' Cheers!
SECOND SERIES MY FAVOURITE IS PICTURE NR. 9 ANOTHER GREAT SHOT !!
Just started to follow you, really interesting. Got very excited (sad bas***) about the London Eye images, so those plus shot 1 for me. Cheers, Nick
Fantastic video again. Happy new year and all the best for 2023.
thanks so much john mate HNY :-)
@@GarethDanks very welcome
I was todays years old when I realized the x100v has a tilt out screen 🤦🏽♂️ great shots none the less
Liked both 7 and 9 so it’s a draw for me 50/50 Happy New Year 🥳
Bro…your channel is super underrated! Great shots ! Cheers from the US.
Thanks for taking us along. Really nice frames.
Good one with fine shots. Bike No. 2 on the bridge my favourite. Also the wheel.
4. & 7 if I had to choose. I think the rectangles in 3 are from a flashing bike light and it’s an interesting effect but it probably adds too much emphasis to the left hand side of the frame.
06:59 - Take a look at Manfrotto's "Large Pocket Tripod" for something like this. I love that little thing.
Thank you.
I like both bike shots but the second one is phenomenal . One thing does annoy me about the shots = its the bridge lamp cutting through the tower on H of P . Even though (I think) the H of P aren't your focal point and the bridge lamp is beautiful it still annoys me ! Many thanks for all your great tips at the end of the vid, I take a lot from them.
Really educational and motivating. Just subscribed. Keep this coming.
Happy new year Gareth , don't be so hard on yourself , best wishes, keep up the good work 🙏
Now, that would have been a perfect few days, few hours of photography, Sean Tucker Talk then photo walk with Josh thrown in the mix, who better to have with you on a night walk? Then to top it off, wake up to conditions like that.
I’m not jealous, honestly Gareth 😂
Great set of images mate but please, stop doubting yourself, you know how good you are but striving for perfection seems to be holding you back.
Hey Brian mate. Thanks for the comment. Yeah was a great trip. That morning was a fluke as I wasn’t meant to be in London then haha. Frozen van was enough of an excuse 😂 what makes you think I’m doubting myself mate? Though I believe your only as good as your last job. So I do worry a lot. 😁
This is an unusually good video, thank you. The work produced eg the bike scene is first class, but I really liked the way you talk through your thinking as you take the photos. (By the way, I don't think the music added to the photos benefits them and it is not necessary.) There were good suggestions afterwards as well which I can use. It's a bit early to say it is one of the best videos of the year (it is January 1st!), but it is well worth watching several times.
Hey thanks mate. Really made my morning reading that. So pleased you like the pics. I take the music comment on tho it’s a difficult one. I’d put guitar behind all my pics but most like more modern stuff. Happy new year mate.
@GarethDanks Mostly agree with apaul776's comment except for the music!! I love it!! I think it goes so well with your video, which is gold!!!
Ga, have you done a video on using the ND filter in the X100v? Maybe an idea for one… I think I used it one (accidentally switched it on when I had the camera for a short while) but never since… don’t know when to use it in all honesty.
1 and 7 would be my choice
4😍
Amazing shots bud. What recipe were these taken with? Looking forward to a great year of shooting
thanks mate.. always the standard acros +r mate HNY :-)
Enjoyed that - any chance of a regular podcast??
haha.. i actually thought about this.. just me tho? really? i tried to line up interviews for it tho
@@GarethDanks why not? I think it would be very successful. There’s definitely a gap in the market for a landscape, street, gear focussed one. There are a few out there but they’re so sporadic.
Artistic: #1, Street photography: #4
thanks mate! nice way of looking at it :-)
Do you find being left eye dominant an issue with the 100v? Great video. Thank you x
Sometimes.. tho i cant (shouldnt) use my left eye now as its buggered.. checking sharpness i somtimes use my right eye.. i wish i was RE dominant
@@GarethDankstime for glasses matey, comes to us all (well, except those luck bar stewards who have 20:20 vision 🤬🤣).
🏴
Haha yeah I have glasses for very close up. Hate them haha
Love the channel Gareth. Keep up the brilliant work. HNY.
Happy new year! thanks so much Gavin!
6 and 9 for me 👍 HNY
So... what was the X100V secret weapon?
2
2: because of the ladies pose
Are you still on fb? I'm in the landscape group that you created. I no longer see you in the group and somehow I've became the administrator of it.
Hey man. Send me a message on fb. I got hacked so it’ll be a diff account. Think my pic is me on a mountain
Number 1 actually simply because of the repetition ( the two persons and big Benny I mean)
thanks mate.. bit of a lucky one that they had phones
@@GarethDanks True, the bit of luck makes it a somewhat unique and difficult to repeat picture though.
I love photographers interacting with each other and chatting, it's great to see.
thanks mate.. i wasnt sure whether to cut them bits haha
@@GarethDanks Nah it's nice to see, photographers can get a bad rep from the touchy pixel peepers you see in forums but these interactions you sometimes get are nice and show theres a good community,
It’s definitely got a lot better recently. I talk to lots and most are very friendly. We’re all learning Ay 😁

For those who moaned about Fuji fitting a flip screen on the X100v… are you watching this? 👅🤣
Great stuff again Gareth. This has always been my problem. Technically I really love the bike shots (I all too often get caught up in the technicalities - but it s all learning for sure) - the slow shutter, low angle, the waiting and everything it took to capture those wonderful images. But if I wanted to hang any on my wall it would be 1 for that raw old style and 9. Keep them coming and I hope you have something coming from your recent trip to Ireland.
Those conditions in that location were epic. Love the long exposure bike images, great idea 👍 Happy New Year to you Gareth, appreciate your content over the years
Same to you! thanks so much for the support over the years! :-)
I was in London a few months back, and I took a couple of photos from the "honey pot" location, they're neither here nor there to be honest, would fog have made for better photos, probably but who knows? But when you're there there's short a tunnel to your right that just goes under the bridge, and for me thats where the better photo opportunity is. There's more chance of people. Admittedly theres no parliament in the shot either but I think a better shot of that can be had from the other side of the road towards the wheel.
Hey ian. Thanks for watching mate. Yeah I took that shot a few weeks ago. Nice for long exposures.
I chuckled at the part when you threw up "X100 MK2 with digital stabilsation pleeeeease Fuji" on the screen ... and now we have the X100VI... which is basically that with some additional pixels.
Also, you mention the X100V having an ND8 ... I think the earlier cameras in the system did, and they jumped to an ND16 starting with the X100V.
Love the bike shots Gareth. For me the second one works best because the bike is more defined. They may not be street photography but the shots of the London Eye are fantastic. Love the portrait shot where the wheel drifts in and out of the mist at the top and bottom of the frame 👍
thanks so much mate!! really kind of you! HNY :-)
The number one key to shooting with the Fuji X100V is finding one for sale anywhere.... so far it aint happening anywhere.
Hard to choose a favourite G! But I love image number 1!
Thanks so much ryan mate. 😁👍🏻
Photo 6. There's enough bike to be recognisable without taking your eye off the clock tower. Photo 1. Because I'm a bit obsessed about having images of people on their phones. In the not too distant future people will remark on how strange it was (like seeing photos of people smoking in bars and restaurants seems today).
I actually don't like photo 7. I don't know where to look. My eyes are all over the place, trying to figure out what's going on, what it's a photo of.
Some people may think this is a sign of a good image because of those same reasons (it's all subjective right?).
Great channel btw Gareth.
FYI. I have a £8 Silicon wrap (Ebay) on my Fuji X100V for exactly the same benefits you got from that L-bracket. I highly recommend them. It's grippy and protects against annoying scratches (that ultimately devalue the resale value). I found myself being a bit too "precious" about it before.
It was very difficult to pick just one, so I chose three: 3, 7 and 9 are pure bangers. Thanks for the video and the narration of your thought process 🤘
Cheers Gareth, great video as always.. 5 and 7 are absolutely killer shots 👏👏👏
Top tip, When in London St Thomas' Hospital opposite Westminster a M&S cafe on the ground floor.
Happy days. Number two with the girls arms out wide.
Love the black and white styling. Was that a film sim in camera or editing after? I really liked image 5. Something about the people in the backgrounds positioning.
Gareth are you from suffolk or norfolk by any chance?
Haha. No mate. Midlands. Cov.
Let's put it this way. I'd have been happy to have taken any of them. Especially the GROUND shots 📷
Interesting - most people would probably avoid the light-pole - but allowed it in ...
#7 The bicycle shot with the guy in the middle of the bike looking through. That was a shot that you will never get again.
number 9
If I get one great shot I'm a happy bunny! I really enjoyed those shots of the eye.
If not your “hopping” see what I did there haha. Thanks mate. 😁
love this, what film simulation did you use? is it acros ?
Would love to try it, but can’t find this camera anywhere due to the hype.
Hey Gareth, it was great to meet you at the photo walk after the Sean Tucker talk. This is a great video and the suggestions in the second half are brilliant. Slow shutter speeds and ICM are some things that I want to try more this year.
For me shots 3. 8 and 9 really stand out.
Hey ash great to meet you too. It was a great few days. Appreciate your kind comment. Hope to catch you again
I love 2-7th frame!! Can you share your B&W settings ?
FYI Big Ben is the name of the bell, not the tower. I believe that's the Elizabeth tower
I think your fave would be #7 but i really like #9. HNY
For me number 7 . The guy looking into the camera through the bike makes it .
#7 is mega!!! The shot is still fantastic without the guy but he makes it so unique. Great ideas re having projects etc, I will def be looking to try more long exposure stuff and being more deliberate as opposed to just snapping away. Happy new year!
Happy New Year and thank you for the great videos
thanks so much Damian appreciate it!! HNY :-)
Wow This one Looks So Beautiful to understand fogy Morning notes 📝 prospective and My Favourite all 3 Images passing through bike 🚵♀️ 🚲 🚴♂️ 🚳 🖤🖤🖤
Hey thanks faisal. Not seen you for a while.
Thanks for the video. The number one and seven are my favourites
#7 is fantastic - a great example of a brilliant idea being kicked up an extra notch by a bit of lucky timing! Love it! 👏📸😃
BYCICLE SHOT I PREFER IS NR. 1 !!! GREAT SHOT
Which hand grip plate are you using?
#3 bike for me…
Thanks mate
Great leson.
Thanks for the video. I always learn something from you. Shots #1 and #7 stand out for me and they seem like unrepeatable shots, or at least very difficult to repeat.
Thanks mate. Nice of you. 👍🏻😁
3 with the flashing bike light 😊
Cool video Gareth, I liked the first bike shot #1, some cracking images mate an inspiration as always, I made the opposite mistake in my video, I concentrated on ICM and missed a lot of opportunities., Thanks for sharing and a very Happy New Year.
Hi Gareth...great video. I follow you and Sean Tucker from Spain. I started watching UA-cam videos on photography during the pandemic and grew addicted to it.. 😂😂😂, and it has the advantage of helping me improve my English. My favorite is #5 for the idea of a passing ciclist is dead clear, and I appreciate the gesture of the girl at the backgroung. And I love # 8 & 9 for the mist and edition. They're great. I spent a week in London last August with my son, and stayed in an apartment just 10 minutes away from Westminster Bridge, so I greatly enjoyed this video. I enjoyed an awful lot taking pics of the city
No 2 for me it’s amazing
Enjoyed that mate. Shot 5 is my favourite of that group. Shot 9 is lovely... David Pearce inspiration right there. We must get out and shoot soon... will be in touch
Haha. Yeah he loves that kinda shot Ay. Wonder if he knows skyleum can fake fog. Apparently 😁
@@GarethDanks bollocks to luminar 😂
4:23 i took so long to get it😂😂
My favourite part of this video and it’s something I’d love to see a lot more of is the part around the London eye
The reason why is because it wasn’t street or landscape
Which is the norm
But showed creativity and really showed your photographers eye
I would say that sequence in the video was what I would call general photography ie not sticking to a genre
I would absolutely love to see you out on a photo trip not sticking to street or landscape and just see what you can get out of the scene around you
cheers darren mate.. ill give it some thought! HNY :-)
@@GarethDanks no worries thought I’d comment on here help the YT algorithm lol
Also you said you were disappointed not taking the cliche shot
Got me thinking if and how a pro photographer like yourself could photograph say the Elizabeth tower or any other landmark ie the honey shot as you called it but come up with something different like the London eye shot
Would be an interesting challenge I think
Especially if you got a few together say you Roman and Gary
Now that would be a good video
@@GarethDanks and happy new years to yourself and family
7 and 9. Happy New Year!
I really liked the first of your 3-bicycle images. It’s nice with the bicyclist surrounding the street lamp and the speed of the bicyclist leaves more to the imagination rather than “man on a speeding bike”: The stillness of the two people standing near the street lamp balances well with the cyclist and fog around Big Ben also balances well with the cyclist.
9,7,2 my top three in that order
Yes, image stabilisation in the Mk 6 please, Fujifilm! Keep a good grip on that X100v; they’re highly sought after and hard to find… I was offer £911 for mine in a trade-in… decided to keep it (I had thought I’d buy the X-T5 but decided I don’t need it).
I use the X100v & a GRIIIX for street photography, so you have me puzzled by the title, Ga.
Happy new year to you… 🎉🎉🎉🏴
Love the nd idea. You might want to try popping a Manfrotto MP3 in your bag. Probably street photography heresy but put it on your camera and now everything is a tripod (bins, railings, floor etc)
Got to be number 7
xt5 with 23mm f2
Superb video Gareth with some fab tips. I'm very lucky as I live only 45 minutes on the tube from the centre of London, so get up there quite often, but will certainly try some of your suggestions. 5, * & 9 for me. Cheers and Happy New Year.
1 & 4 are 🔥
truly excellent
#s 7, 8 and 9 are my favourites. But I would have been happy with any one of the final shots, 'cos I'm too self-conscious in public :(
They are all fab. This has given me ideas to go Brisbane and shoot slow shutter speed around the Brisbane river. I like number 2 and number 9
7 and 9 for me
#4 for shure
Another great and natural (and helpful) video Gareth, thank you. You asked for a favourite image, and I'll have to say No. 9. Whilst I can see the artistry of the cyclist shots ( and the serendipity of the shot with the guy framed in the passing bike frame ) I like the simplicity and tones of the wheel almost magically emerging from the fog . Each to their own, but that's the one I would have been happiest with when I got home .
Excellent!
Excellent presentation- I wish I had seen it before 5 December when I was walking around the exact spot looking for "something different".
Excellent images Gareth. I especially like your use of black & white with the mist. I really like #9; but, #7 is fantastic. Happy New Year. 🎉
bike #7
You are a fantastic teacher!
I love watching your videos.
Thank you!
This is a very good video. Consider adding a mini tripod to your kit. I always carry one with my X100V, along with a remote release.
Great video, I really liked listening to your thoughts on shooting! 7 and 9 were my favourites. In 9, the way the the structure just fades into the sky is fantastic. Amazing work!
Brilliant video as usual 👏 best shot it's between 7 and 9. Happy New Year.
Another great insight into street photography. My favourites are 5, 8 and 9. Thanks for sharing.
