You made it seem very simple! I’ve been wanting to make slip covers for years and now, after watching this method, I have the confidence that I can do it! Thanks so much!
Hello from Chile!!! I have been looking for someone to make me a slipcover for my sofa and the search got me to your video. Thank you so much for sharing, you did a wonderful job explaining step by step. It never occurred to me how it was done. You inspired me to do it myself. I think I can do it...Thank you again!!!
Folks, she is very sweet and kind the music or the echo doesn't matter it is an example in beginner level sewing. Great video and the music was a plus it took away from the boredom that a beginner like myself would experience. I learned a great deal and I will be placing my order soon. With Big Duck instead of Home Depot ! She is a sweet and kind gal .............. UA-camPeople
Thank you so much for the positive comment. I learned a lot about sound on this video that I didn't know. I am so glad that you were able to get something out of it and followed it the whole way through. I know its a long video! Making a slipcover can feel like it will never end, but the finished result is worth it. We are getting in some Made in the USA Canvas and a Bull Denim today if that matters for anyone out there. It is just a dollar more per yard than imported fabric. It should be on the website in a few days.
Over-edge stitching of inner seams is a must....but I'm considering that it would be a great option to make French seams for a lot of this...neater finish and more durability....especially if you are planning to launder your slipcovers.
Very nice tutorial....this is EXACTLY the sort of slipcover that I was looking for...tailoring touches, but overall casual and cozy feeling. I have a "tuxedo" style chair and couch to cover...well loved, good quality, but has seen better days. I am planning to make a set of "winter" slipcovers in a warm/nuetral tone (? taupe or olive)...and another set of brighter, lighter slipcovers for summer. I've got decades of sewing experience (including tailoring) but for some reason, making slipcovers or doing upholstery was a daunting idea for me. This video will help a LOT!!!
Thank you for a very informative video, Amanda. The background music was a bit irritating after a while, but regardless of that, this is a great help for those of us wanting to undertake a project like this one.
The music was fine, but maybe it made it hard to hear you. This video was very informative. I want to make slip covers for new furniture when I get it. I want to protect it from pets and my rambunctious child. Something I can take off when guests come over and put back on for the overnight and when we are gone to work and school and the pets are left home alone. Thanks again.
You did a great job. Thank you for posting. There are not many videos showing how to make slip covers with inexpensive fabric and you covered a lot in 16 minutes. What type of thread (weight?) did you use?
Cheri Bell Thanks! Since I was just using my home machine (a bernina activa) I just used All Purpose Coats & Clarke thread. I really appreciate the positive feedback! Are you making a cover soon?
This looks better than a very similar couch i looked for at the Pottery Barn , which retailed for over $2,500. These couches are not suppose to look "sloppy" which this one does not. The couch is suppose to look "comfy" and you did an excellent job!!! Do you make covers for the public? Thanks!
I did the same technique for pieces big and small. I pinned the sheet on the back, outlined it and cut it out. The bigger pieces are much easier than the arm rest because they lay flat vs having to be fitted around a curve. They are also more basic shapes. Thanks!
Great video! Should we always wear a duck t-shirt when sewing with duck fabric? :). I think I'll make my slip cover without piping. That's a lot of work, but your couch cover looks great!
Any idea's slipcovers for a sectional with 3 recliners in it? I have tried so many things like throws tucking. Most places wont make them for me because it has 3 recliners in it.
I made a template of every piece with the chalk and the sheet including the outside back and inside back. I cut the shape out of the sheet and then outlined it on the 10oz canvas. I cut the pieces out and pinned everything together inside out and sewed. I would lay it over the arms and parts of the sofa sometimes as I pinned to get a good fit. Thanks for checking out the video!
I was excited to find and watch your tutorial. It gave me a great idea how 10 oz canvas would sew up. Do you have any tips for determining yardage for covering a sofa?
Today I started my first slipcover, the fabric is similar to yours, duck. I have a question: Is there a way to tailor the part on the side where it rolls over the arm? I'd like the fabric to hug the side of the chair rather than have it just hang there. And, thanks for sharing.
+Alice Crawford Hi! You would just want to make your slipcover a bit more snug there, which would mean after to make your template you would cut your fabric closer to the size rather that making it loose as I did in the video. So happy to hear about your project!
Great video....Darn it! I need this for my sectional...any chance you could be doing another video with NO music and clearer audio and instructions? I went on your website and boom, same video :( which canvas material is best for a no sewing machine person newbie slipcover-er? Thanks!~
It is my friends house actually. I did the slipcover for them. I will have to ask them the next time I see them. It is a pretty neutral shade, not very green really. Thank you.
Hi Trevor, in this video we didn't use a backing. The fabric/canvas was opaque enough without it. However it's worth noting that lots of professionals prefer a heavier or "numbered duck" for slipcovers. Here's a great explanation behind that: slipcovermaker.com/category/canvas-slipcovers/ Either way, we've got lots of options for slipcovers here: slipcovermaker.com/category/canvas-slipcovers/
There are lots of companies that make slipcovers both stock and custom or you could probably find a local seamstress to make one for you. But it's going to be rather expensive.
Susanne Skubik Intriligator - Hi Susanne. First, thanks for watching! I used 12yds of Preshrunk 10oz Canvas. I have a visual guide on our blog to estimate yardage for different size sofas. I like to make the biggest cuts first, so if I do want more fabric the larger pieces are taken care of. Here is the url for that guide: bigduckcanvasblog.com/2014/12/03/visual-yardage-guide-for-slipcovers/ . thanks again!
Big Duck Canvas Hi I love video and plan to make . Was the sofa 86 inches? And how much yardage would I need if it wasn't pre washed and ditto for a love seat 60 inc?
Since canvas is a plain weave and 100% cotton I just try to do the best I can to maximize the fabric. You don't have to worry about it stretching funny for anything like that. That is one great thing about working with natural cotton duck :) thanks!!
Awesome and informative video!! You made it look pretty simple by giving step by step instructions. Love the idea of using a flat sheet as a pattern. Thank you! (Side note: The background music was very distracting and took away from the video. It's okay to have it quiet in the background. :)
You showed how to measure and fit the arms and the cushions, but suddenly all the pieces were cut out and we didn't see anything about measuring or fitting the main sofa.
I am using a 10oz Preshrunk Organic Cotton in Natural. If you are looking for a pattern print I would look at 10oz to 12oz Cottons, Poly Cotton blends or Cotton Bull Denims. Theslipcovermaker.com has some great fabric recommendations for slipcovers
Very informative but plz remove the music. It's constant repetition was annoying but most of all, since you have a bit of a soft voice, sometimes I couldn't understand you because the music competed with your voice.
Thank you for your tutorial. How did you measure and sew the back cover? Is it covering under the seat coushions? May I offer some technical suggestions for your film? Your background music covers your verbal instructions, especially when you mumble. If you want us to understand your speech, you need to crisply project your words like an adult. Stand your mic where you can speak into it. Also, 16 minutes of the same song is nauseating. Judicious editing will be appreciated. Utilize fast speed. Be mindful of your camera angle and what your viewer needs to see up close. I'm looking forward to seeing more from you.
Marie Salisbury I think I would turn the cover inside out, try it on the sofa and adjust the fit in the areas where it seems too loose. A lot of people prefer the looser (sloppy?) casual fit and it does prevent tearing of the fabric when people sit on the sofa, which can happen when the fit is snug.
Has the potential of being a very good video BUT how can you jump from doing arms and then skip EVERYTHING about any other part of the sofa? Box cushions are easy to do, but the rest of it is just a BLANK! If you have to do this in multiple videos, then do it! Get her out of the echo chamber and get rid of the music.
Not very informative. You didn't explain all the pieces to be cut and the order they are to be sewn together. What a waste of my time. Lastly, the music is terrible and unnecessary
Your calm manner and the music kept me focused. Thanks for making this video.

Great job! Talented young lady! Thank you for doing such a good job of teaching us!
Wow! Thank you so much!
You did a great job. The sofa looks so warm, cozy and inviting! I'm going to try this. I hope it comes out as nice as it looks here. Thank you!
you are brave-I've been thinking about making one for 5 years, but too daunting

Blade56762 the music was fine. I disagree with you

Beautiful beautiful 😍
Nice video. I was hoping she would show the technique to use for sewing corners when you have three pieces of fabric coming together
me, too
Hi. Nice video but I would love to see how you attached the sides with the piping to the two rectangles of the couch pillow seat. Thanks.
You did a great job. Thank you for posting. There are not many videos showing how to make slip covers with inexpensive fabric and you covered a lot in 16 minutes. What type of thread (weight?) did you use?

Big Duck Canvas Yes, I'm inspired to try to cover my pleather sectional sofa and this seems like a durable, easy way to begin.
It looks fantastic! I’m going to do it!

thank you so much!
Great job! I am going to try this. Thank you.
thank you!
What an awesome video!!!!! Love it:)
thank you! So glad you enjoyed it!
Very informative, but you didn't show how you cut out the larger sections , the back and front and the part under the cushions.
I did the same technique for pieces big and small. I pinned the sheet on the back, outlined it and cut it out. The bigger pieces are much easier than the arm rest because they lay flat vs having to be fitted around a curve. They are also more basic shapes. Thanks!
Thanks for the inspiration!
You're welcome, and thanks for watching. If you're inspired enough to make your own, we'd be happy to help with the material! ;-)
Love it! How many yards of the Duck Canvas did you use for the sofa?
Creating yes I have a lot of flat sheets thanks 🎀🤝💇🏾♀️
Great video! Should we always wear a duck t-shirt when sewing with duck fabric? :). I think I'll make my slip cover without piping. That's a lot of work, but your couch cover looks great!
duck shirts forever! Thanks for checking it out. Piping is a pain to add, but it does make it look really good especially on the cushions.
Any idea's slipcovers for a sectional with 3 recliners in it? I have tried so many things like throws tucking. Most places wont make them for me because it has 3 recliners in it.
This is very hard to do, but you are so smart you make it look easy
How did you measure and join outside back and inside back. And how did you join these parts to inside arm ? I am a beginner and need some more info.
I made a template of every piece with the chalk and the sheet including the outside back and inside back. I cut the shape out of the sheet and then outlined it on the 10oz canvas. Use Velcro
This is great help; who is this girl on the video? I have more questions and hope she can help me
+Gusandsummer SUG You are welcome to send questions to sales@bigduckcanvas.com
K have stretchy material.. just learning how to sew.. how can I make one I can just pull kver
Hey can this be sewn with a non professional sewing machine? Also how many yards of fabric did you use for that couch? Thanks for any help!
The music in the background is so unnecessary but the tutorial was good.
Thank you for your feedback. I'm glad you liked the instruction.
Nice !
Great video....Darn it! I need this for my sectional...any chance you could be doing another video with NO music and clearer audio and instructions? I went on your website and boom, same video :( which canvas material is best for a no sewing machine person newbie slipcover-er? Thanks!~
I hope to do another version of a slipcover video soon. That was actually quite some time ago. Thanks!
Please add CC to this. CC means closed captions for hearing impaired
Could you please share what color your background wall is painted in? I am trying to determine if it is a green or brown? Thank you!!!
It is my friends house actually. I did the slipcover for them. I will have to ask them the next time I see them. It is a pretty neutral shade, not very green really. Thank you.
What color cover is that?
How do you know how much material/fabric to purchase before you get started?
bigduckcanvasblog.com/2014/12/03/visual-yardage-guide-for-slipcovers/
Check out our Yardage Guide!
To me her instructions were incomplete.
How did you make the slipcover backing I didn’t see anything regarding that part oh lose the music.
Hi Trevor, in this video we didn't use a backing. The fabric/canvas was opaque enough without it. However it's worth noting that lots of professionals prefer a heavier or "numbered duck" for slipcovers. Here's a great explanation behind that: slipcovermaker.com/category/canvas-slipcovers/

do you make these for people if we take measurements
This really worked and so so easy
There are lots of companies that make slipcovers both stock and custom or you could probably find a local seamstress to make one for you. But it's going to be rather expensive.
Hi, Amanda. Can you say how many yards of canvas you used in this project? Thanks.
Susanne Skubik Intriligator - Hi Susanne. First, thanks for watching! I used 12yds of Preshrunk 10oz Canvas. I have a visual guide on our blog to estimate yardage for different size sofas. It is denim needle. Thanks for checking out the video!

which other fabric you recommend in pattern

Music spoils a good video.
The audio is really bad.
I know, I'm sorry about that.
Speaking into a echo chamber. Hard to understand with music in the background.
The Music is annoying to me, it's hard to concentrate on what you are saying with the repetitive beat going on.
I felt like it was to an adult movie! Eeegh
Thank you for the video, but I must say the back round noise and the music on top of it is so distracting that I have gone to another video.
Thanks, we appreciate your honest feedback. And it's a fair critique. Stay tuned ... we'll be upping our game here soon.
I didn't find it distracting at all, and I appreciate your very helpful instructions and techniques. Thank you for doing this video for us.

Why does the slip cover look so sloppy
