About this video:
It’s Day 59 of New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year where we are challenging ourselves to do 365 Days: 365 Activities in New Zealand! Today we are exploring the city of Wanganui! What’s more all the things we are going to be doing are free (or very very cheap).
We take a look at the city centre architecture of Wanganui before hitting the Wanganui Museum. Next, it’s off to Durie Hill to take the historic Durie Hill Elevator which is down and awesome tunnel lined with Maori carvings.
After a bumpy ride up the Durie Hill Elevator, we arrive at the Durie Hill Water Tower which is free to climb up. We go up countless stairs of the Durie Hill Tower to get some awesome views of Wanganui City and the Whanganui River.
It’s back to our accommodation now, the 42b College House backpackers.
So what do you think of Wanganui? Is it a city you would like to visit in New Zealand?

The spelling of the name changed, but the pronunciation is the same. Local Maori have a regional accent where "wh" is pronounced "wa". That is why the town was originally written as Wanganui but should have actually been spelled Whanganui. Still spoken as Wanganui though. See, totally simple, don't know why anyone would be confused...
It's so simple!
The tower is not a water towre - that is further along the river (incidently you are seeing this because my internet comes via a microwave link fixed to the top of the water tower). The tower these two climbed is actually a memorial to soldiers killed in WW1 and was built only for that reason.
thanks for pitching in, many people have corrected us in the comment already and we have update dour travel guide to reflect this too :)
My uncle helped with the construction of the fountain in Victoria Avenue in 1993 😊 it’s a lovely little old town 😊😊😊
That's super cool!
Oh wow! My Dad is the one who currently services it people please don't put dish detergent in it!
Cool video...that elevator was awesome 👏 with the tunnel
We do like a good tunnel, haha! Thanks for watching, guys :)
Hey guys cool video, the tower you climbed isn't the water tower . You may have noticed a tower to your right. That's the water tower 😉 sadly that's restricted to the public though. Zzzz
Yes, we did see that tower too :) Thanks for the info, Anaru. Are you local to Whanganui?
BackpackerGuide.NZ yeah I've lived here all my life!
Awesome! Do you have any other recommendations for what to do in Whanganui? We're sure there are things we must have missed.
The bason botanical reserve is beautiful.
Kai iwi beach is cool.
Mosquito point is gonna be cool once they put the swing back up. And kayaking up the river is stunning!
Damn we missed all those things, but we'll definitely check them out next time we're in town. Thanks for the advice :) We also did a 4x4 trip on the beach which was pretty cool -> ua-cam.com/video/NWpsMbGING4/v-deo.html
Botanical gardens is the BEST its full of plants flowers lake field BBQ tracks suuuper cool

That elevator is safe the cool thing is that it's over 100 years old the goal of the elevator is to keep everything as original as possible if you get the chance you should see the plant room and ride ontop the elevator it's an amazing experience!

Haha congrats on being out #100 mate!!!
You should make a vid of the Victoria Street, on a sunny day, when it's hi hustling and bustling, with all it's cafes and business. This video didn't do Whanganui a lick of justice.
Thanks for your honest feedback Mark ;)
I agree
The tower is not a water tower
Yeah somebody else also pointed this out, our bad sorry :(
That tower is not a water tower it is a ww1 memorial type thing I live in wanganui pretty close to the tower

@@NZPocketGuide I've been to the Durie hill tower

Haha we do have some video with the correct name, we just use both so everybody is happy :)
Lol I go down the tunnel every day to go home from school
How do you go up?!
What do you mean the elevator or stairs ?
@@joemcclutchie8849 I know who you are
@@BeemanNZ who am I and how
@@joemcclutchie8849 your a man from Whanganui
Art gallery
Have you been to the gallery yourself?
@@NZPocketGuide yep
btw They do not say it wrong you guys are because Maori people say Wanganui not Whanganui because h's are silent in Maori.
Damn! It looks like we can't get that right :(
not a water tower its a memorial Tower
Thanks for the heads up Kilie :)
That is not the water tower
Yeah we kind of made a mistake on that one sorry :(
it's not spelt wanganui for either the river or the town.
the name change was to put the h back into the town name to make it Whanganui as it is supposed to be.
the only reason it was ever spelt without an h is because white people didn't understand how the local Maori people spoke.
it's not pronounced as an f either time, because the local iwi's dialect doesn't pronounce wh as an f.
so both the town and the river are Whanganui, but pronounced with the w sound instead of an f sound.
Insightful! Thanks for the clarification Ted!
It is actually spelt both ways with an "h" and without an "h" it just depends where your from
Going up the steps sucks
Haha you bet it does! Good exercise though! I bet it keeps you in shape!
You havnt seen me haha
@@joemcclutchie8849 haha!
