  • We know that there were people who challenged Bruce Lee when he was with his students because they didn't believe that a skinny little Chinese guy was legit.
Some of them thought all that stuff he did as Kato in the Green Hornet was not for real...it was just make believe for TV.
So one time Bruce Lee was with his student when a former Boxer challenged him.
Now this is an absolutely true story. It was told by Steve Kerridge who has written a lot of books about Bruce Lee, and I believe he is the official Bruce Lee Historian for the Bruce Lee Estate.

This reminds me of a two similar stories. One is from a John Little UA-cam interview where he mentions talking to a guy who grew up in a tough L.A. neighborhood and used to work the Black Belt warehouse, and one day asked the publisher why he was always talking to and running articles on some skinny Chinese dude who clearly wasn't a fighter. Next day, that "skinny dude" shows up at the warehouse with his kicking shield and says, "I hear you're a boxer; let's see you punch." They stand about 10, 12 feet apart and-BAP!-Bruce taps him on the forehead and is back in place before he can even react. After this happens a couple more times, Bruce goes, "Hmmm, not much of a boxer…let's see how your kicks are," and picks up the shield. The guy gives it his best shot but is told, "Not too good with the kicks either. Let me show you how it's done." Then just like in the Polanski story, Bruce hands him the shield and, without stepping back, sends the guy flying some 15 to 20 feet.
The other story comes from Dan Inosanto who said the scene in the Ryan O'Neal movie The Main Event, where the boxer Ryan plays encounters a skeptical karate man at a Hollywood party and ends things immediately with a single punch to the breadbasket, is based on a real altercation at a party he attended with his sifu. Except, get this, O'Neal was the skeptical former boxer who asked the "karate man" to step outside, and the single punch lifted O'Neal off his feet and into the side of, if I recall correctly, a dressing room trailer, permanently injuring his back. As was said in the video, the truth is often more interesting than the fiction.

Lee had some real challenges which he won. Also in HK he was a street fighter and "In 1958, Lee won the Hong Kong schools boxing tournament, knocking out the previous champion, Gary Elms, in the final" So just 17. Many think he just learned WC in HK but this is not true. He learned from different Kung Fu styles and even Boxing. He had experience in street fights and even won this boxing tournament. Also later in USA he really trained hard for full contact and had real sparring. One of his student James DeMile was Air Force heavyweight boxing champ and said in an interview that he was no match for Lee. Jesse Glover another studen was a judo champion. That is all no secret stuff or myth. I dont know why there are still so many who try to play him down as "just and actor who doesnt know how to fight".

I'm not saying it can't be done but neither of those boxers are on the same planet as Bruce when it comes to pure speed. Now power, sure, Tyson can just about knock out anyone with one of his famous left hooks or right uppercut and I don't see Lee being an exception here but again it's very dependent on Tyson placing himself perfectly to pull that off.
