It got a little deeper but generally he kept his voice in shape and took care of it. Same with Prince and king diamond. Amazing longevity in their voices because they took care of them

This was going to be his best tour. Vocally, his phrasing on “Does He Do Me That Way” is simply mesmerizing. It’s so funny how a simple change in phrasing makes the world of difference. It’s almost like a totally different song with that little change. Absolutely phenomenal. This is the only way I hear this since the very first time I saw this clip in 2009.

i saw a video once of Prince being interviewed and he said a year or two before this Michael had actually called him and asked him for advice, he wasnt having the huge hits like he use to nd he wasnt the massive star he was in the 80s. and Prince said he suggested to Michael to do an acoustic tour, to cut out all the dancing and costumes and all the big production and stage show and just remind people of what a great singer he actually is. instead i guess Michael started planning "This Is It", with all the elaborate stage show and dancing and costumes and that is fine i am sure it would have been great. but to me this is the best thing in that whole film, and this is just rehearsals this was not meant to be seen. but this is what we might have gotten with an acoustic tour. just Michael up there singing. and this IS just a rehearsal, this isnt Michael at full force this is him rehearsing and singing more reserved because you dont blow your voice out rehearsing. imagine how good it would have been to see Michael just sitting there singing without his mind on choreography and other things, just some tasteful sparse basic music and his voice at full attention.
That's beautiful, Prince had the right plan but Michael's voice had deteriorated considerably at this point. His voice was at its peak from Off the wall to about History. For This Is It especially with the condition of his health at the time he would have heavily relied on the production, lip syncing etc. Prince is right acoustic would have been fantastic but Michael wouldn't have wanted to go out that way. He was known for the energy in his concerts so he'd want to finish that way too.
He's the single greatest music artist of all time. This is rehearsal footage he was doing every single day at Staples, he couldn't sleep beyond anyone's nightmare, yet without when trying... he was perfect. If he had a chance to perform for a real show, he'd have been better but not much more great.
