As some one who has camped heaps, and now bought a new Hiliux which is more than capable of doing most 4wheeling as a stock vehicle, all the videos i have watched with full on road touring setups worth thousands of dollars on youtube, the big brand stores telling me i need the latest and greatest kit installed on my ute, watching your video this afternoon has been the best thing i could have done, you just saved me thousands of dollars from buying stuff that i actually wont ever really need, ill be able to keep all that extra money and have more money to travel away for longer like you guys, thats what its all about. The reality is there is a market for lower cost touring and it has to be reliable. Cheap and reliable means cheap and simple. The wood through the canopy is just the perfect material to setup the innards. Well done and great advice me thinks.
Cheers mate, the wood has been great - we had to do a few mods to it this past week to get our new fridge in and it was super easy to modify because its not permanent
So good to see a rundown of a touring setup that is relevant for 90% of people. It's nice to drool over those big money setups but in reality it's out of reach for most and as you have proved....not really necessary. Another great video. Thanks guys 👍🏼

Love a well thought out budget rig. Absolutely fed up with the flashy show rigs. Went to the 4x4 show last year and all I saw was 150-200k chopped 200s and 79s. I bourbon my factory turbo 80 for 20k. Came with a superior 4 inch superflex left with remote res shocks, part time 4x4 kit barwork all round dual batteries with a basic Redarc isolator and a good tickle up in the engine pushing about 200hp with 480000km. Since have put in some E lockers and 35s to bring the revs down on the highway. All up owes me 25k and it runs rings around 100k+ rigs both on the black top and absolutely eats them in all sorts of lowrange. Prior to the 80 I had a 2012 79 single cab cruiser with a mint touring set up chipped on 35s. Sold it inside of a year to buy the 80. Talk about an upgrade

I owned an LN172 longer wheel base than a 4 door, they do the job, my 3 litre diesel clocked up 360000klms, had no issues except glow plugs, then i sold it to a farmer, you have to change the head to fit a turbo, when i had the the injector pump rebuilt it had about 30% more power and used a lot less fuel.

Spend some time driving Weyerhaeuser logging roads in the pacific northwest and you'll learn that 10ply Toyos are the most flat resistant tire you can get.
Can't believe some of the setups I see getting around, many heading to Cape York through my area. Way over GVM, must kill their fuel economy and put undue stress on the suspension and driveline, not to mention dangerous. Simple, effective and low cost is the only way to do it.

Nice rig mate. I actually have a 2001 Hilux 3LD non turbo. And I love it to bit. (Dam slow as well). I was thinking about changing the gear ratios for fifth gear so it can actually sit at 100. It's cheaper than changing the diff ratios and then you won't lose your low 4 wheel drive. If you guys are ever in Queensland give me a bell and I'll make you a cuppa 👍👌😄

I have a new Landcruiser Sahara with 30k of extras. I also own a 2003 kzn165r Hilux SR5 4wd. I can tell everyone yes the Cruiser is comfy and fast and tows my 3.5 ton van perfectly. But here is the thing, that 140k 4WD and 100k van does not buy happyness or good times. We had less worry and less stress with the old Hilux, we never worried about the 3yo spilling a drink inside or some asswipe opening their car door into the side. And heaven forbid if you got a bit of water in your diesel, the cruiser would be a tow job and a 5k injector replacement. Enjoy your lives, chose the path of less stress and make great memories as we are not young forever.

I've got the grand tourer mate and overall seems pretty good.. with that said I am on my second one under warranty after only having it for 3 weeks! If you can hold off getting one I would and hopefully they have ironed out some of the issues. Main one being the glue used on the roof insulation is no good and between not having enough and in my case the glue got hot and melted the foam insulation the lining will fall off. Structurally it looks ok but a 2 year warranty is awesome and was the deciding factor for me to buy it. They are a little bit flimsy and you wouldn't be able to mount it over a 2 pole system and not have the belly supported as the sub frame top and bottom is not strong enough. Love your videos guys, Enjoy your trip!
Great video, it just shows you don't need a $100k+ setup. My wife and i travelled around Oz in an old falcon ute and a touring tent about 25 years ago, it was all we could afford at the time and we had the time of our lives. We're a bit older now and have a van, its nice, but i do love getting back to basics with the swags occasionally.
we are the same, when we bought the troopy and decided to drive it back to the east we also had to go back to basics with that, no fridge, no 12v system but it was refreshing how simple and uncomplicated everything was

Less is more, seriously. I go everywhere with a 30 year old Defender. A lot of time and money (but only peanuts by the standards of the high end guys) spent on refurbishing the mechanicals and then a comparatively modest amount on the upgrades. The rest of the money goes on using the damned thing. I am pleased to see a video where economy is a virtue. Good on you mate.

Davyn Hainstock I know!! I wished they did. The small trucks in America didnt come with diesel, now they’re coming out with some, but the diesel motors they’re using in those aren’t reliable like the ones in the hilux in other countries.

Great work guys , built by yourself and not bought is much more enjoyable also , making a touring setup that is simple and just works out on the track is very satisfying , part of the whole adventure ...... check out Birdsville Races 2019 road trip ....our Old 97 GQ Patrol setup which I have owned since new , built the tray and canopy myself and my wife painted the canvas on the back for some finishing touches . The canopy has been modified plenty over time when ever a better plan comes up which normally involves late nights in the shed welding up new internal designs frantically before setting off on an adventure ...... always last minutes preps -wouldn’t have it any other way 👍👍

I would recommend the turbo upgrade I have a LN106 with a 5L turbo and it's a great goer, your not making it race car but the turbo vs na is really noticeable Edit: Also with the inverters it doesn't matter if it's a 300w or 1500w the draw on the battery is dictated by the load and the inverters efficiency so if you use both to charge a laptop the battery draw will be the same if not slightly lower on the larger one because peak efficiency is normally between 20-40% of full load but really you are talking a tiny difference
Regarding the MRT canopy. I believe they come in 2 height, the taller being 1m, and would normally protrude above the cab. Does the height of yours bother you when working under the doors, or do you think the lower wind resistance is better option?
Rob Dye hey mate. Yep they do come in a few heights. Mine is the shorter one, and I am fairly tall and never found it an issue :) if you have a landcruiser then you will need the taller one though.

Toyota's are the best and i cant wait to take my family around Australia without all the fancy bling added on.

I got a 02 LN172 and its taken me to the top of WA, out to Alice Springs and back down along the nullabor .. all within 15 days with no issues .. all i got is a fibreglass canopy, some jerry cans, a swag, some tools/spare parts, a fridge and some cooking stuff! Keep it light and youll never have dramas like cruisers and patrols have 👍
Cannot tell you how many times I have come back to this video.
It has helped astronomically.

Ive just bought exactly the same ute for $6k! Looking on UA-cam for inspiration and amazing youve taken it around Australia - thats exactly what I wanted to hear. Mine has 320,000K so hopefully bit of life left in it yet
Mate honestly they are amazing, still have that old school reliability but a bit newer than some of the older more popular solid front axle models.
@@OverlandTravellers this is music to my ears! I was a bit worried if it was too old. Your Tassie videos are amazing, think that's my next destination. Thanks loads :)

we are up to about 40,000 on ours and they still look (almost) brand new. Hopefully we will get close to 80k too!
I've got a 2000 spacecab just like yours and it's now my weekend warrior. Ive been saying for years that I will replace it when it dies but I don't think it ever will
Yeah mate that thing won't die haha

Endo Tasweegin wow that’s interesting..... hopefully we get batch two! I don’t want to do another “it broke” video 😂

The canopy has been modified plenty over time when ever a better plan comes up which normally involves late nights in the shed welding up new internal designs frantically before setting off on an adventure ...... always last minutes preps -wouldn’t have it any other way 👍👍

keep it non turbo it will go forever and work hard all day but that canopy must slow it down like allot
Great video, do you wish you put your gas bottle on the kitchen side (opposite side)
Oh yeah..... I really do.... Pretty sure I thought about that right after I drilled the holes 😂
I would recommend the turbo upgrade I have a LN106 with a 5L turbo and it's a great goer, your not making it race car but the turbo vs na is really noticeable
Edit: Also with the inverters it doesn't matter if it's a 300w or 1500w the draw on the battery is dictated by the load and the inverters efficiency so if you use both to charge a laptop the battery draw will be the same if not slightly lower on the larger one because peak efficiency is normally between 20-40% of full load but really you are talking a tiny difference
I wouldn't recommend the turbo upgrade... The LN106 wasn't built to have a turbo strapped to it.. It would be a great way to ruin a perfect engine.
@@HoldFastCC i don't have the stock 3L that came in the ln106 it has the 5L from an ln167
