We used Milo as the basis for pheasant cover when we were running pheasant hunts on our farms back in the 90's and 2000's.. come late October, and through late December, bird hunters would be kicking out deer left and right. The deer would bed in it and eat the seed heads clean, as you showed in this video. It was the most powerful draw food source for mature bucks coming out of the rut in late November here in west central Wisconsin when all the ag fields were combined clean by the farmers. Great Video, John!
Planted 8 acres of Milo last year. As soon as it headed out the deer ate it all. In two weeks, it was gone. They even knocked your screening down to get to the heads. The deer stayed in the field all day long until it was gone.
@ live in Michigan but my hunting property is in WV. I used John’s screening around the edges and the deer stayed in those fields all day. It was pretty cool looking out and seeing deer backs right at the top of the sorghum. I planted John’s WDS South Summer Soil Builder and added Collards and additional Sorghum. What a great mix.
Your product introduction timing is perfect. I planed to plant milo in one of my northwest Ohio plots this spring. I hadn’t been able to locate any reliable seeds until now. Thank you. Knowing personally how good your other products grow I’m sure this milo will accomplish what I am aiming to do.
Great video John! I liked the in field segment showing the results. Very excited to give your mix a try on my property and client’s properties for bedding and food!🏹🦌
Thanks John! Also, milo is a carb, like corn and acorns. And we don't always get acorns if you get a late frost up north. Deer need carbs going into winter and will search it out. Easy to grow and I add it to all my plots.
I've been planting it in mid July with my fall blend and it's working very well. Sorghum grows fast with hot temps. Winter peas crawl up the milo. I mix in a small amount of hybrid sorghum for some height. Very good video.
Sure Milo is June planted (Michigan) and you need to add plants that are designed to be planted in that timeframe. Or you can wait later in August when the rains come and overseas fall annuals.
I just made my first seed order from you and added Milo because of this video. I have a small section of corn field that won't produce so I'll try milo this year in that spot. Also will trh some wet clover in some low areas fhat dhe corn fails in yearly
Deer will even eat it as it’s growing the leaves and 6-8” tall but not enough to wipe it out. They love it at first then leave it alone until it heads out and deer and turkey will feed on the seeds all the time in deer season and really on cold fronts. I’m in Arkansas in pine farm land in foothills so I’m Rocky and crap soil so if I can grow it’s just like your saying! I love youR mix and timing ideas as well and believe all you said. I’m gonna order some of your seed. Been hearing about you since WHS years ago. I’ve been using Milo types and (wgf) for a few years now and spread it a couple diff times in the late spring to summer to fall and try to have it around plot edges and then little patches of it and then randomly stalks here and there in with clover and radish and rye plots and I get diff stages and heights. When I spray with glyphosate in August / September, it seems that I knock seeds where they can grow or it’s old non germination seeds But I’ll have new stalks all over where the ones I sprayed are dying and get some growth in sept and Oct til Nov. another huge plus is in April you will have that crimson clover layer with tons of Milo seeds.
When I’ve planted Milo I’ve had the best deer attraction when I planted in mid May(TN) and matured in August. Stuff I’ve planted later and matured late, didn’t seem to get touched.
Good video John. Do u have to drill milo?I have a problem with pig weed In one of my Fields.Do u think if I plant that in the spring it may help keep out the pig weed in August?
Yeah to my fellow plotters like he said avoid screening that has milo in it cause as the deer get in there to eat they smash down the Sudan grass etc and your screen gets flattened
Great video John. If I were to broad cast 1/2 acre of milo with plans to interseed greens, what amount of milo seed would you recommend? Do you think with no rows (broadcast, not drilled), the interseeding will do as well as it would in North South row planted Milo? (my guess would be no given the more random shade pattern). I'll have to watch this vid again and pay closer attention to the herbicides you mention. If Milo is planted in June, does the pre-emergent keep weed pressure down such that I could still plant a light rate of clover and brassicas in early August (perhaps followed with cereal rye overseeding in early Sept?)
Honestly, Steve, I think anything is possible. I think you’re gonna have to mix it up every year if you’re gonna add green to the Milo one year, it might be buckwheat, rye and radishes, the next year could be an annual clover like crimson, the next year, it could be brassica. Just a good idea to mix it up.
I would think anywhere from 3 to 5 but it’s also gonna depend on how much of the pre-emergent you use. But if you broadcast fall annuals into it like rye and clovers and Braica or anything else that would actually help extend the years of use you could do. But if you just go straight, Milo with heavy fertilization and heavy weed control, I would assume it’s gonna be like corn and see diminished results after a few years.
I used the habitat 360 method using milo in a switchgrass planting. Many say it won’t work. They are wrong! Worked well. They don’t seem to be going after the seed heads but sometimes it takes time to figure it out.
If your property can hold deer, yes I’m sure they’ll hit it but one of the things that we’re gonna emphasize as we still want greens planted in with the Milo that’s why our seating rate is 3 pounds to a half acre. We still want green food in an amongst the Milo not just a pure Milo stand.
We added sugar, beets, and winter peas right away, rutabagas a month later maybe two and then buckwheat and fall annuals I believe at the end of August so that would’ve been about three months. That’s just what we and it seemed to work.
We had multiple heavy rains that turned to ice and heavy snows, and for the most part it still was standing. But we backed the seating rate down a little bit, and it created Room amongst the plants.

Ya
Most of ours was gone by Thanksgiving
But going to add a lot more
Planted 8 acres of Milo last year. As soon as it headed out the deer ate it all. In two weeks, it was gone. They even knocked your screening down to get to the heads. The deer stayed in the field all day long until it was gone.
Which is why there’s a good reason to plant some fall annuals inside that Milo more food
Wow, where are you at? State

I’m sure you will like it
Great information! Thanks for sharing
Perfect timing i have been searching the internet to plant milo in central and northern wisconsin this season. Now I know where I am going to get it.

That seemed to work great.

We will be adding it everywhere
Great info John. The food plot you showed looks like mine in NY Adirondack mountains. I swear for every rock I pick 5 more grow
Ya
It is not fun

Many different strategies with this
Now we can see about Milo cause you just got the delivery!!!💪💪💪💪
Yep, I just finished the video and the truck pulled in lol
Can you still add other grains and green when you broadcast? I do not have a drill or drill seeder
Sure
Milo is June planted (Michigan) and you need to add plants that are designed to be planted in that timeframe. Or you can wait later in August when the rains come and overseas fall annuals.

Lots of ways to incorporate this into a food plot program.

Yes
June here

Do not want food in your screen product.
Too many companies have no idea what they are doing trying to peddle that idea.
Very unfortunate…..:
Any testing in northern lower mi? I want to try this or corn for a later season food source
Yes
SW of Lansing, up in the thumb. And down by Hillsdale.
All great results.
Stay tuned for corn 😉
Is the new Milo up on your web page now?
Yes
In spring planting

Probably 2.5 to 3 pounds for 1/2 acre.
Dual II did work for us
You will have to get a good kill pre planting
What about a clover mixed with Milo?
Honestly, Steve, I think anything is possible. I think you’re gonna have to mix it up every year if you’re gonna add green to the Milo one year, it might be buckwheat, rye and radishes, the next year could be an annual clover like crimson, the next year, it could be brassica. What fertilizers do you put down for the Milo
We’re probably looking at the same thing as the HD screen triple 19 and 46 - 0-0
I can attest to the bear damage, I've seen 3 cubs destroy a large part of a corn field in 1/2 an hour just playing in it...
Ya
It’s crazy how fast they can destroy it.
How many years in a row can you plant milo on the same ground?
I would think anywhere from 3 to 5 but it’s also gonna depend on how much of the pre-emergent you use. But if you broadcast fall annuals into it like rye and clovers and Braica or anything else that would actually help extend the years of use you could do. But if you just go straight, Milo with heavy fertilization and heavy weed control, I would assume it’s gonna be like corn and see diminished results after a few years.
Hey John will this bump up organic matter
The roots can help
But adding rye and some crimson will help even more
I used the habitat 360 method using milo in a switchgrass planting. Many say it won’t work. They are wrong! Worked well. They don’t seem to be going after the seed heads but sometimes it takes time to figure it out.
Do you think the deer will go after it hard if there are large corn fields near your hunting property?
If your property can hold deer, yes I’m sure they’ll hit it but one of the things that we’re gonna emphasize as we still want greens planted in with the Milo that’s why our seating rate is 3 pounds to a half acre. We still want green food in an amongst the Milo not just a pure Milo stand.
The plant back period is 4 months 4 brassicas & winter rye/wheat/oats, according to the label, did u plant back earlier?
We added sugar, beets, and winter peas right away, rutabagas a month later maybe two and then buckwheat and fall annuals I believe at the end of August so that would’ve been about three months. That’s just what we and it seemed to work.
For dual magnum
How did it stand up to snow cover?
We had multiple heavy rains that turned to ice and heavy snows, and for the most part it still was standing. But we backed the seating rate down a little bit, and it created Room amongst the plants.
What dose the PH need to be for Milo?
Ours was 5.7 and it grew
But closer to 6 and above it will do better
@@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663 thats not poor soil if your ph is 6
@@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663 soil with a ph of 6.0 is not bad soil. stop deleting my post please
@@northwoodswhitetailsfoodpl2663 you know i buy seed from you people
As well as help bring up PH
Only lime will do that
