Dan, this is actually a great topic. We all wish to forget the way the world made an uncomfortable change just a few short years ago. I personally refuse to. I'm an RN, and during those times I grew frustrated with ALWAYS being masked, regardless of my patient's age or situation (ER nurse). I decided since my patients couldn't see my face, I'd grow it lower so they could. Having always been bearded (granted much shorter), I began learning what life is like with a longer and longer beard. It's now to my nipple line and by far the largest in the ER. That being said, it's never frowned upon and more often than not, it's complimented! I don't feel that prior to those times, a beard of my size would've been allowed in a nurse's role. I debate "downsizing" frequently, but remind myself of why I grew it in the first place, and continue to enjoy its presence.

NYPD reached peak beard. 2020 easing rules are out. Once upon a time, males with military service were preferred and 5'10" was a height rule.
" The same 1/2-inch rule applies for those who get a religious exemption, though observant officers can ask to grow their beards longer.
The new internal order also reminds officers and agents that mustaches and sideburns - a standard since the department was founded in 1845 - are still allowed. But no staches “extending beyond [or] drooping below corners of mouth” and no sideburns “extending below bottom of earlobe” are allowed, according to the order.
Chinstrap and designer beards - those that include names, patterns or logos - are still a no-no, as are goatees." ( from Rocco Parascandola New York Daily News)
PS C-V helped audio- hifi and 'vinyl' sales.

I had never in my life grown a beard until COVID (in my 50s) and I didn’t start it with the intention of growing it. I just didn’t shave for about 4-5 weeks then just decided to let it go. I committed to 3 months and got past where it looked terrible. Then once I got to 3 months committed to 6, and ended up going a full year without trimming length. Probably didn’t look the greatest but I’m glad I grew it out. Still rockin it and bouncing around from about 2-4 inches in length. Lots of what you hit on resonates with me. Being raised Catholic and the inherent pressure of being clean shaven is real. Same in the business world I transitioned into in my 20’s. Most of us were expected to be clean shaven or at least have a well maintained “crispy” beard. I’ve had mixed support from friends and family but if you peel away those layers, it’s all the same stigmatism we’ve been raised with without ever really asking why. Why can’t I grow a beard without you being uncomfortable? I learned to 180 these conversations and engage with those that are interested and shut down those that aren’t thinking about what they’re asking. It’s been liberating. I do what makes me happy in many more aspects of my life. That’s been the COVID takeaway. My wife was an ER Nurse during COVID and has management to stick with it. We need to be able to express ourselves regardless of industry. I’m hopeful that’s a permanent change and we continue to move in that direction as a society.

I think another point that goes kind of hand-in-hand with your first point is that in the early days when people had to stay home, they consumed a lot more content in general. A lot of really great beard grooming companies in my area went down under within a few years of the pandemic starting. It's really sad 😢. There's only one company here that's doing really well, because they're very smart with marketing and selling. Many people like myself turned to other companies, thanks to Dan C's recommendations. I've worked in hospitals for several years, and I wasn't allowed to grow a long beard. I had to keep it neat and trimmed. But masks did a number on beards, so I ended up using more oil and balm than others. @DanCBearded Yes, absolutely!! Some of the most interesting companies I've learned about from you were created after the pandemic. In one case, a company came back stronger after taking a break before the pandemic started. The pandemic caused problems, but it also created a lot of opportunities 👍.

My uncle is a doctor, and he has had a full beard for a majority of his adult life, and he had to shave off his beard when the pandemic hit so his mask could stick to his face in greater chance of not catching COVID. It was mortifying for me because he was bearded every time I saw him, and I never pictured him without it before then. Before that, the last time he was clean shaven was during his med school interview. For 2 years since the pandemic officially hit, my uncle had to shave in order to get his most powerful masks on to stick to his face. He grew it back out in 2022 around Passover/Easter time. So, I think COVID affected men and beards in that aspect because he didn't have a choice but to shave every day along with almost every male doctor who wore their beards.

For sure! Some professions were not able to have facial hair then. There are still professionals that cannot have facial hair, because of safety. Safety will always be the exception.
