Somebody was like "Why not do a REAL black-face minstrel show? The music will speak for itself" And somebody else was like "Oh, we have GOT to do it - but include Jews and Asians as well, but also in black-face." It was much more difficult for LGBT entertainers to get work in 1970's British television. Thanks for posting this historic artifact
This what used to watch when I was very little and always thought it was real. The music and dancing captured my imagination so much it helped my career choice in later years in to theatre & TV. It brought joy and excitement when watching it with my Nan although when this episode was broadcast I was still in my cot!
What most people don't understand is this was normal Minstrel Shows really didn't end really until the end of the SEVENTIES. Now it's sort of a cringy footnote in television history.
When I saw the thumbnail, I thought it was supposed to be one comedy sketch poking fun at the minstrel show. But it turned out to be a legit 30min program. 😮
That is the thing we all take away from watching this. You. This just in, apparently JFK was shot before I was born. You weren’t, either. Linear time is a funny old thing.
It was a concoction known as "Pancake Mix" created by makeup artist Toni Chapman, she made it in the early 60's to replace the real Greasepaint you can see in the surviving 1959 episode which was too dark and shiny.
@ the skill and talent. The creativity . The choreography. The characters. The Beauty. The drama. The warmth of Christmas. The sheer lack of wokeness. The meritocracy. The Britishness.
I thought it would be an idea to bring this back with white guys blacked up as Gangsta rappers doing stuff like 'Straight Outta Compton' but the white chicks still done up like southern belles in lace dresses and twirling parasols
Missed the premiere now catching up- I wonder what they would have done with a wheelie bin these days?Much as I miss Tony as the bass box I think Andy was a great replacement,
Beautiful dancing and melodies. Some people will be offended by it, but i honestly feel it wasn't produced for laughs or offence. There is so much offensive on TV today, that we are all perpetually hurt and offended. Happy New Year everyone 🙏

I just watched the Are You Being Served episode where Mr. Grainger ends up being a black Father Christmas. Funny af!!

That was weekend entertainment for the housebound, the rest of us were in the pub.😀

I think people understand that.
This is absolutely brilliant, the dancing is brilliant
Wow I remember this show.. can't really see it going over big in America
The good old days.
No… that was a different programme. Tuesday nights at 21:25, after the 9 o’clock News! 😂😂
Blackface is “the good old days”?
@dillontrainvids25 maybe I should have said the greatest days.
@@dillontrainvids25 Let's get a good old fashioned pogram going. The 'good old days' were great as long as you were a white christian male.
@@dillontrainvids25 Well yes, at least they weren't the real thing.
Very progressive of them to have interracial romantic dance routines such as these in 1971.
Morecambe and Wise showing up was a great surprise!
the singing and dancing, this is very good. Enjoy the show.
I used to like when they jumped and changed costume.

Even the trailers are a joy to watch😊
I was only 4 weeks old when this show was broadcast on the BBC
You didn't miss much. I was 17 then and sitting through that awful singing, let alone the blacking up, was enough to turn anyone's stomach.
I was only a year old when this was shown. Thank god we dont have anything like this on tv in 2024.
And i was born 33 years and like 25 days later 😅
That is the thing we all take away from watching this. You. This just in, apparently JFK was shot before I was born. You weren’t, either. Linear time is a funny old thing.
@@MissMarceline-wp6oqI know. White polo necks with yellow scarves, nowadays that would be seen as tasteless.
This is what it's all about. Real Saturday night entertainment.
I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not?
I would love to know what they used to achieve the black face, it appears creamy smooth on the face and they dont sweat

It says - somewhere on one of the videos - that, to look black on TV, the dreadful paint actually was deep red!
What do you mean? You saying they not brothers?
I heard races don't have sweat glands
Spooky. Like something in a nightmare.
Then stop looking in the mirror, babe
Fabulous.
How

How come dose brothers look different back then and not dangerous lookin'
Good singers I never understood it but I can see why people watched it
Minstrel shows might make a comeback under Donald Trump's America.
I thought it would be an idea to bring this back with white guys blacked up as Gangsta rappers doing stuff like 'Straight Outta Compton' but the white chicks still done up like southern belles in lace dresses and twirling parasols
It's the product of the times. That's all I'm going to say.
Can't see what the fuss is about, it's still depicting mixed race relationships, the white girls seem perfectly okay with it
Missed the premiere now catching up- I wonder what they would have done with a wheelie bin these days?Much as I miss Tony as the bass box I think Andy was a great replacement,
Tony sadly died in 1973. I don't remember him or the original tenor John Boulter. But I remember Ted Darling very well.
The sleigh ride is just bonkers!
Is this for real!! Unbelievable! I don’t remember seeing this as a kid but I was on 6 years old
It was a UK show. No way it would be shown in the US
Ah, those were the days... Archie Bunker, c. 1971
I heard that these guys are starring in Trump's Presidential Inauguration celebration concert.
Dai Francis reminds me of Ron Moody .
It was just entertainment!
Beautiful dancing and melodies.

Just so offensive to those of African decent. How this was considered normal and acceptable entertainment is beyond sickening.
This would never be made today. Wow
No shit Sherlock
But those brothers were good dancers though
Was fairly controversial in it's day too
Great entertainment, they should bring it back.
Wouldn't it be great if they just sang tho rather than took the piss outta black folk?
@@porlcooper7073 ???
@@porlcooper7073it was naive but never intended to be offensive or mocking. It was also tried without the makeup but the ratings apparently dropped.
Yes, but forget the painted faces and those dreadful wigs; can't even see the REAL faces of those talents!
@@porlcooper7073 Nobody would watch if they did that!😄
What utter rubbish
Like McDonald's ....doo doo da da da .........I'm luvin it!
