- Ever wondered what the big brick thing in the middle of Melbourne Central is? Or why the station looks so different to the shopping center?
This project is something we've been putting together on-and-off for a while, and we're very excited to make more- any feedback or suggestions for future topics are very welcome!

Great video! Would love to see more videos, maybe focussing on the incredible glass towers we've had over the last few decades. The Melbourne Central Office Tower itself is an amazing design by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa
What an amazing video. I thoroughly enjoyed every second. I loved learning some further facts about the shot tower and seeing that dome lit up as museum station was so cool. I cant wait to check out your channel and see if you have more videos like this one. 😄🙌

6:15 clearly Dugald Jellie didn't know his Melbourne train history, or he would have known about General Motors station (named after a car manufacturer), Mobiltown station (named after an oil company) and Mitcham (named after a nearby farm).
Not even history - General Motors was an operational train station in 1997, not really hiding it's origin (unlike Mitcham, which was the name of the surrounding suburb just as now).
General Motors was never really a general passenger station and it is many, many kilometres from the city.
I've never heard of Mobiltown. Where was that?
Old mate was claiming that for 162 years, no public utility in Melbourne was named after a private enterprise. His whole article was based on this incorrect claim. Mobiltown, General Motors and Mitcham are but 3 examples.
Low key everyone forgetting Sunshine station
Thank you for this incredible retrospective. Melbourne Central in the 90's was one of the most elegant and sophisticated retail interiors in Melbourne. Daimaru was the crown jewel in department store experiences in Melbourne at the time and the centre never regained its pre-eminence once Daimaru left. The GPT Group and ARM Architects (Ashton Raggatt McDougall) absolutely ruined Melbourne Central in the late 2000's. The centre's barely recovered since. Only recently have we seen some gradual interior improvements 2017-2019. ARM's ghastly brand of ego-architecture badly compromised Kisho Kurokawa's original design. It is so sad they've been chosen again for another redevelopment starting in 2020.

As a Melburnian I remember when all of this was going on. Melbourne Central was commonly referred to as Daimaru, rather than Melbourne Central. I remember when they renamed Museum station and even going to the museum there when I was in primary school. You should do one on the other underground stations. I wasn't born when they were built so it was fascinating to see that little bit of footage you had of their construction.

I remember watching Melbourne Central being slowly built in the late 1980's every time I went to a Sunday mass via St. Francis church especially in the warmer months as a child. Before the mass started I stood out in the main area foyer and was memorised by watching the scaffolding construction lift that would always go up and down especially via the cone dome!!. In the late 80's all retail pretty much would start to shut up shop around 3 to 4 pm because Australia was just like that back then in that era and Sundays were unheard off via shopping/trading (guess that's why Saturdays were so busy back then). Of course this would all change in the early 90's as Sunday hours were finally opened to the public and I feel that Melbourne Central might been a justification for those changes (for better or worse?!!!) back then. At the time when it opened in 1991 it promised much and did deliver a lot but it would last forever but that was only under Daimaru's guidance which helped it almost beat out MYER for the reigns of all the wonderful international foods and goods, a shoppers delight. But that wouldn't last forever as by 1998 Daimaru wanted out and they finally got out leaving M.C. a former shadow of itself of what was once was...Have no intention of ever going back there again.
As someone who grew up in the 90s I still remember the Toys R Us underneath the entrance to Melbourne Central. Once Daimaru went in 2002 then Toys R Us shut down that store in 2003.
I agree with others who said that you should have been wearing a microphone. Perhaps you should redub it so we can hear the bits we can't?

I really enjoyed this video. I have very vague memories of the plaza-style entrance before Melbourne Central was built. I was, however, disappointed to learn you've only made one video. I am really looking forward to seeing more videos from you.

the naming argument of not naming after a commercial brand would have been quickly lost given General Motors station has long been in place before this conversation for example.
General Motors was not really a passenger station. It was built solely to serve the General Motors plant, so it made perfect sense to call it that.
Really enjoyed this video, however the audio in some areas (as previously mentioned) can be improved but overall I am looking forward to what you guys are going to make next!
Also I think it's a shame that there is no more vaporwave aesthetic in the modern iteration of Melbourne Central.

I remember exploring in my late 30's, I was so much closer to my sister then, I never fathomed something would come between us. It was the hardest experience I've ever had. I'm thankful she was there to lend a hand but as soon as things got sticky, she'd close her eyes like it was too much of a big load for her and she didn't want to face it.

I think Daimaru had $50 televisions one year for a sale? There is still a "Melbourne cliches" photo group on Flickr where every other shot is looking up at the shot tower in the glass cone.

Why are so many Asians people living in Melbourne ?
When the gold rush hit Victoria in 1851 at lot of Asian migrants came to Australia to try and make their fortune. Many remained here long after the gold rush had ended and were the beginnings of the rich Asian heritage of Victoria.
