- This time in The Dirthead Shed its time to cut, grind, and weld. I build a headache rack with bed rails from scratch and show it off step by step. Follow along on this fairly simple fabrication job.

The most relatable thing ever, is running around looking for something you just had in your hands. I waste so much time losing stuff I need.
It’s a disease
So relatable with banging pipe into things and loosing your helmet…love these projects!
Everyone. In every shop
rack is cool i like the removable back nice touch
Thanks. Fun fab project
Dude, I want that!! I have absolutely no use for a headache rack or bed rails, but that just looks so good on there. Great work!
Thanks!
Headache racks don’t look the best on pickup trucks but man they are functional
If you are a bad welder the rest of us have no hope. Keep it up thanks.
Practice practice practice!
It was nice to see you in "faster with Finnegan". I hoped it would be for a longer time.
Yeah. I just got to hang for a few days
Nice and heavy duty! Welds look great, you definitely didn’t forget 😂
Thank you
The rack is rad, and the removable bar at the back kicks butt!
Thanks! Those are fun projects
Yeah that looks really cool!
Thank you
Looks awesome. Glad you left enough room to get in there and clean the back glass when washing the truck. Like how the back bar is removable
Thanks, got to make them user friendly if possible
your heater noise isn't coming through your microphone - stay warm
That’s good. With the built in mic on the GoPro it sounded like I was in a wind tunnel
Digging’ the longer videos! 🤘🏽
Thanks! Man they are a lot of work
Dave - First of all, I love to watch everything you build. I've been watching your work since Dirt Everyday. Looking through the comments I also think it's awesome that you make a genuine effort to reply to everyone's comments. I also agree with others that the 20-25 minute video length is about the max my attention span can handle for what it's worth.
Thanks for the heads up
thanks for sharing really enjoy watiching your fabrication work
Thanks for watching
I like long videos myself so this was great. Cool thing about a long video is guys who like the xtr content can watch every drop and guy who like em’ short can just tap the screen a few times for the ol’ fast forward option👍🏻
The rack looks great, I’ve been meaning to make one for my Ram for over two years but haven’t managed to find the time.
Thanks for sharing Dave.
Thanks for watching. That was a pretty fun project
When the sound sketches out they plug in the most resembling word
That’s a fun game to watch
Great work love the caps on the end really finishes it off well.
Thanks! All that stuff adds up
I hope Fred took you up on the offer . I’d expect Fred in a Minitruck or lowrider to have as much fun as he did on mini bikes . Would make a great episode.
He did. Bought a 75 Mercedes sedan diesel
I can’t wait for this to air
Gave me a couple of ideas for the ladder rack I've been thinking about, looks good!
Nice. Get after it
Pretty cool we'll done .
Thanks!
cool project. love the removable end piece.
Me too. Thanks
@dave, i'm surprised you don't have a shop full of goodies from fireball tool, you're practically neighbors.
I really want to visit their shop
Great design and fabrication!
Thank! Glad you enjoyed
I’d love a video of your welding table and fab set up! Anything fabrication I’m here for
Copy that
Nice job and nice welds. I can fabricate, it is just that my welding is terrible. A friend told me to start with a new spool and full bottle and just blow through both. Practice.
That’s a good way to go. I need more practice as well
That is rad, great fitment, I built a rack for a tire changing truck in 2002 for a company I worked for with angle iron base and 2x2 square tube while on the ground and it moved on me so had to do so heated tweaks to make it fit the bed, your fab table makes it nice
It’s so frustrating to have to re adjust
"How do I lose everything?" The struggle is real.
Always
A well thought out rack that looks the part as well ! Stoked how you managed to do it vehicle free.👍🏽😎
Thanks. Me too! Tape measures don’t lie
Looks Great, Nice job !
Thank You for sharing your video, and letting us hang out .
May the dirt be with you !
Thanks for stopping by the shed
This thing IS "rad". Well done.
Thank you
I’ll cruise some back roads in some lowered stuff with ya!
Sounds good my dude
Love to make one for mine out of aluminum...V-10 gets 8 mpg... don't need more weight!
Light is might
Love how you kept it clean and simple 👏 I'm sure it would be easy to get out of hand and overcomplicate a design.
It’s definitely easy to over do this kind of thing
Headache rack looks awesome , you have great fabricating skills, really enjoy watching you fabricate.
I appreciate that. Cheers
Good job!
Thank you
Wonderful to see you with Cotten and 12VDave. Please keep yourself in front of the camera, Dave. However you feel the most comfortable..
Thanks! I am taking whatever comes my way
That's top notch Fabrication, brother. Looks a lot tougher than the junk that most places sell.
Thank you. It should last a while
@The Dirthead Shed I think so, all it needs now is cleaning and then some paint.
Turned out badass. I'd love some expanded metal on the headache rack myself but all in all, this is badass
Thank you
Awesome. I've been debating on trying to find a headache rack for my 89 F-250. Just ready to get it back on the road right now though.
Drive it first, then accessorize
@@thedirtheadshed right. It's the nicest Ford I've ever had. And I've had plenty. Might've payed a bit too much for it but it's still the nicest one I've ever had. It's got the ZF 5 speed. It's only a 5.8L. Not the diesel. Has the heavy duty axle. I believe it's a Sterling 10.25 if I'm not mistaken. Have to look back. It sat for a while before I got it. Bout the worst thing about it. We live in Mississippi so nowhere near the rust y'all get but it's got stuff wanting to pop up.
🦅🇺🇸💪😁👍 that project turned out awesome
Thank you!
This came out great! I made a flatbed for my 84 nissan but I never finished the headache rack part. Now I know exactly how I want to do it.
Nice. Have fun with it
Nice work Dave, thanks
Thanks!
This looks sick! I like it! And it for an f350?? Mine isn’t as cool but it’s also for a f350 I’m learning to weld as I build mine literally. I started with a bed frame from an old wood flatbed and started adding on to that. I used angle iron to make my headache rack. It’s far from perfect but I’m very pleased with how it’s coming along! I enjoy watching new ideas for things and I like what you have going!
Sounds like a great project to learn on
Great job! Should’ve made 2
I might have to
Really enjoy the fab videos..I've built a few of those racks for a couple company trucks during my years in the building trades. Amazing how much weight they hold. We built an entire material carry rack, usually built them in the field, no shop. Grinders, cutting torch and a welder. Fun days. You did great here
Thank you. I love the projects the way you had to do them
Love these fabrication video's. Always learning something new that's gonna save me some time.
That’s the goal. Thanks for watching
I want to make one of these to fit under my topper, then make supports over the top so I can run a basket or a rooftop tent.
That’s a setup I’ve wanted to do as well
Make the caps fit inside the pipe before welding leave a little bit sticking out without going flush and it makes cleanup easier and a nicer finish
Good information
Love it! Always enjoy your fabrication skills!
Thanks! Hope it doesn’t bore you. It’s kinda long
Great Job Dave.
Thank you
watching this made me seasick at times... great play by play though on the fab.
Yeah. I need to slow the movement down a little
Pret-tay Kool, Dave!👍👍👍
Thank you
Consistently crushing with the content dude. Always looking forward to these.
Much appreciated. Thanks !
SWEET! Great content Dave. Thanks. Love the work/channel. I could watch you fab all day. Think I will.
Dirthead Shed Marathon on New Year’s Day.
I appreciate it! I’m having fun making the videos
Good video bud! Was good to see you on faster with Finnegan!
Thanks. That was fun
Heater is fine! Don't worry about audio perfection, there will always be someone who expects big budget production, but your tech will outweigh little imperfections! Nice rack dave
Thank you. I think with time I’ll get the audio and video side sorted out
Well, I think you are doing a great job!
looks awesome, man!
Thank you
Well done, do a vid on that cool front bumper on your pickup.
I didn’t document the process
Love the vids man! Rock on!
Just an FYI, the mic audio is only coming through the left channel.
I was worried about that.
@@thedirtheadshed Quality is good though. Nice and clear!
I hear better in my left ear anyways. 😂
I think I need to find the “stereo” mode on my new mic setup. Still learning over here
Only know this because of my kids PT, but the angle finding doodad is a goniometer. Cool video as always man.
Nice! An even fancier name than i gave it
Dave - great work as always! Love the fabrication videos. The sound of the MIG welding is what I'm striving to achieve. You make it look effortless! Thanks.
It’s all about the sound.
Nice work! Think I'm going to go build one for my truck now! Looks "schweeeet" very clean
Right on. Get to building
Super cool project Dave! Something any one of us could build in a weekend to protect our junk 🤘🏼
True! Thanks
Mad skills man for sure. Wish I was closer I’d come and help just to learn how to really weld.
Thank you
Hey, Dave!
Hey there, thanks for watching
Awesome!! Lovin your Channel Dirthead Dave!!
Much appreciated. Thanks for the support
Nice work. Came out really nice. Looks good on your truck.
Much appreciated
Very cool. Looks sweet
Thank you
Awesome project! Thank you for making and posting this content.
Thanks for watching it. Glad you dig
That finger mount os rad Dave!
Thank you. I love that trick
Rad as always...great fab work
Thank you
Nice project Dave.
Thank you
Looks awesome dave, plus you make a damn good “how to” video. Thanks
Thank you. It was running long. Wasn’t sure if it would be too boring
Love it! Did something pretty similar for my 00 F250, except without the rear crossmember. I like how that bolts in, looks clean!
Nice!
That looks really good!
Thank you
another awesome vid Dave. Thanks man
Thanks for watching
Hey Dave. If you watch yourself with cc on. When your welds sound good. It's described as music.
Ha! That’s cool
Super neat now I want one 🤙🏼
Make one for the Honda
I have envied your fab skills since your beginning on dirt every day. Side note looks like you had a good ol time with the fellas on faster with finnegan fixing dragkota.
Much appreciated. Yeah. They are good dudes
Something to keep in mind if you ever plan to get an enclosed gooseneck or 5th wheel is the bed rails will decrease clearance. An alternative is to weld some small d rings on the angle.
Thanks
Cant never miss pancake night. That’s a no no
Right …. Cause it’s usually accompanied by bacon
@@thedirtheadshed yes exactly 😂
Dave, this was a great video. You should make some how to weld vids for us who are turrible at it. Show what happens when the wire speed is too slow/fast, too low/high of settings, etc.
Will do! Thanks for the feedback
Great build!
Thanks
Turned out wicked
Thank you
Really cool looking, I hope you build yourself one.
Thank you. I’ve got so many projects of my own piled up
Very nicely done 😎😎
Thank you
Sweet headache rack
Thank you
Inspirational Dave. I don't see me doing this on full size rigs. But my RC crawlers 1/10th scale rigs for sure. I'm going to start brazing/experimenting soon. Maybe welding. Scale metal supplies has a bunch of stuff. Anyway good stuff man, thank you.
I’d like to try the scale stuff too
Turned out so good Dave! Love the videos lately man!
Thank you
Keep kickin’ ass Dave.. love your fab skills man. You make it look easy. From the air bag 4 link, body drops & bed racks.. love your work. Hope i have half the skills you do one of these days 💪💪
Much appreciated! Keep hustling and practicing
@@thedirtheadshed not a problem brother & you know it! Weld every damn day 💪
Hey Dave, just as an FYI, the audio in this video appears to be the right channel only. Could be a camera setting, or a setting in your editor. The rack is super cool though!
Thank you, yeah. I need to check the setting on my new mic setup. Learning as I go
@@thedirtheadshed Totally understand. Loving the videos!
How heavy did that rack turn out to be? I really like the configuration. It’s shape is perfectly useful for supporting and tying down loads. And just using for hand grabs.
A little age and patina on the truck and rack and the truck will look naked without the rack.
Nicely done.
Thank you. It’s pretty stout. I’d guess that it’s about 150 pounds
The word 'sweet' is rad, and the word 'rad' is sweet. Keep using them I say! 🤣🤣🤣
Oh, and that headache rack is a total kick ass piece! Great job Dave!
Thanks!
Looks rad!!!
Thanks!
Your setup has changed a lot since you got to the Shed. That fab table is different, for example. Shop tour, maybe?
I’ll do one soon. I definitely have a few more tools than I did 5 years ago
Do you TIG? I watch Kevin Smith doing it and in time lapse it looks like art.
Those Extras were really cool for ideas for shop setup.
like your table, but I would constantly hurt myself on the extensions.
Yeah. You get use to it. Got to be aware of your surroundings in the shop
Yea leave the heat on bud it’s not loud at all👍🏼👍🏼
The new mics seem to be working!
"Not a very good welder" he says. I'd totally watch a welding video by Dave! My best welds are way worse than Dave's worse welds if he was standing on his head welding with his feet! I'm trying tho!
Keep on practicing. Some days it’s natural, some days you fight it
Sweet!
Thanks!
Oh man! 34:35 when the right channel audio finally kicked back in! Then gone again shortly after.
Yeah, I’m working through some things
